For the Ireland-specific comparison updated September 4, 2026, Proton VPN ranked first, followed by NordVPN and Surfshark. Comparitech scored Proton VPN 9.0/10, NordVPN 8.5/10 and Surfshark 8.2/10 for this Ireland use case. Those are comparison scores—not universal ratings or guarantees of speed, streaming access or privacy. The best choice for you depends on whether you need an Irish IP address, better performance from Ireland, access to a particular streaming service, or everyday protection on public Wi-Fi.
Which VPN ranked best for Ireland in 2026?
Comparitech’s Ireland comparison, updated September 4, 2026, reports testing conducted in September and scores seven VPNs against a country-specific set of factors. Proton VPN leads that comparison; NordVPN and Surfshark follow. The scores are not each provider’s overall rating, and the ranking reflects the comparison’s chosen blend of performance, streaming compatibility, price and network measures.

These are Comparitech’s September 2026 scores for its Ireland use case, not a guarantee that the top-ranked service is best for every person. The comparison describes six inputs: Ireland speed retention, Ireland latency, streaming compatibility, effective monthly price on the best plan, server fleet size and country coverage. See Comparitech’s Ireland comparison and its scoring details.
What the Ireland benchmark measures—and what it does not
Speed is a test result, not a promise
In Comparitech’s reported Ireland measurements, Surfshark retained 96.88% of baseline speed across 15 measurements, Proton VPN retained 93.00% across 12, and NordVPN retained 90.95% across 15. These figures describe that comparison’s test results; your experience can differ with your internet plan, route, VPN server load, protocol and test conditions. A large worldwide server network does not, by itself, guarantee a faster connection from Ireland.

Streaming compatibility can change
The comparison uses a broad “most-blocked services” measure. It reports 78.80% for NordVPN and 75.90% for Surfshark. That composite is not a promise that a particular streaming platform, catalogue, account or device will work: services can detect and block VPN endpoints, and results may change over time. If streaming is your main reason for subscribing, look for recent tests of the exact service and region you need.
Network size is only one consideration
Comparitech reports 20,533 servers and coverage in 148 countries for Proton VPN in its 2026 benchmark. Provider network figures can change, and a global server count does not establish local speed, privacy quality or access to a specific service.

How to choose based on what you need
For everyday privacy or public Wi-Fi
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN provider, helping protect it from people monitoring the local network. It also shifts trust: the VPN operator can see information that your internet provider or network operator might otherwise see. A VPN does not make you anonymous, and it does not stop tracking through signed-in accounts, cookies or browser fingerprinting. Compare providers’ logging policies and independently verifiable audit scope and dates; the sources reviewed here do not establish the full audit record of every provider in the comparison.

Choose a service that offers servers in Ireland and check that its apps support your device. ExpressVPN’s Ireland page gives this vendor guidance for obtaining an Irish IP: “To get an Irish IP address, download the ExpressVPN app, sign in to your account, and connect to a server in Ireland.” This is the provider’s own setup instruction, not independent confirmation that a particular service or account will work.

For a specific streaming service
Use recent, service-specific compatibility information rather than treating a general streaming score as a guarantee. Check whether the provider supports the device you use and whether the result applies to the country catalogue you want to reach. Access can change as streaming platforms identify VPN connections.
For a lower subscription cost
Comparitech lists effective monthly prices of US$2.99 for Proton VPN, US$3.49 for NordVPN and US$2.49 for Surfshark in its September 2026 comparison. These are dated comparison inputs, not verified Irish checkout prices, recurring renewal rates or guaranteed offers. Before subscribing, check the billing currency, the amount charged upfront, the plan term and the renewal price. A low effective monthly figure on a long plan can require a larger initial payment.

For multiple devices or a refund option
Check simultaneous-connection limits, supported operating systems, customer support and refund conditions against the plan you intend to buy. ExpressVPN’s own Ireland page says its current plan tiers support 10, 12 or 14 simultaneous connections, respectively, and describes a 30-day refund guarantee for new customers. These are provider-stated terms and may change, so confirm the current plan details and conditions before purchase. Read ExpressVPN’s Ireland VPN page.

The Irish government’s Digital Services Act page includes VPNs among examples of “mere conduit” services and explains the DSA framework; that classification is not a blanket statement about the legality of every VPN use. A secondary Irish comparison and ExpressVPN’s vendor page say VPN use is legal in Ireland, but the official page cited here does not directly settle a general legality question. A VPN does not make unlawful activity lawful. For a particular legal concern, consult a qualified Irish legal professional rather than treating a VPN provider’s marketing page as legal advice. Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
How to decide before you subscribe
- Name your main use. Decide whether you need everyday network privacy, an Irish IP while abroad, a particular streaming service or another specific capability.
- Check Ireland-specific evidence. Use the September 2026 scores as one dated comparison, then look for recent measurements and service-specific results relevant to your needs.
- Compare the full cost. Confirm the currency, upfront charge, plan duration and renewal price at checkout instead of relying on an effective monthly figure from a comparison.
- Review privacy and practical fit. Read the logging policy and audit information, then check supported devices, connection limits, support and refund terms for the exact plan.
- Recheck before paying. VPN prices, network figures, streaming access and plan terms can change; verify the provider’s current offer and conditions directly.
How much weight should you give other VPN rankings?
Provider and reviewer claims answer different questions from an Ireland-specific benchmark. NordVPN said in an August 10, 2026 blog post that Artifact Security gave it the only Platinum rating in a 2026 comparison of five providers under the AMTSO testing standard. That is NordVPN’s account of a test that is not specific to Ireland, so it should not be treated as independent confirmation of the Ireland ranking without the underlying report. Tom’s Guide also reviews NordVPN’s streaming and privacy features, but those findings are not Ireland-specific.
