| Service | Use-case assessment | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mullvad | RTINGS’ privacy-oriented choice | RTINGS describes a clean iOS app, WireGuard support and a “Force all apps” setting. The guide also says major streaming services may block detected VPN connections. RTINGS’ iPhone VPN guide |
| Windscribe | RTINGS’ budget choice | RTINGS lists Build-a-Plan at $3 USD per month for two paid server locations, with unlimited data available for an additional $1 USD per month. These are the guide’s stated terms and should be checked against the current offer and renewal price. RTINGS’ iPhone VPN guide |
| IVPN | RTINGS’ short-term choice | RTINGS lists an IVPN Standard weekly plan at $2 USD. The guide says IVPN has no functional kill switch on iOS 16 or newer; verify current app behavior if this protection matters to you. RTINGS’ iPhone VPN guide |
| Proton VPN Free | RTINGS’ free choice | RTINGS describes unlimited data, one device at a time and no user-selected server location. It lists free servers in Poland, the Netherlands, Japan, Romania and the United States; availability can change. RTINGS’ iPhone VPN guide |
| NordVPN | RTINGS’ streaming choice | RTINGS describes one-click connection, manual server selection, up to 10 simultaneous connections and a kill switch enabled by default. Its guide also notes personalized ads and analytics unless users opt out. Streaming access to a particular library is not assured. RTINGS’ iPhone VPN guide |
| ExpressVPN | The Independent’s overall pick | The Independent recommends ExpressVPN based on its iPhone assessment. This is a competing publication’s verdict, not evidence of an objectively established winner. The Independent’s iPhone VPN guide |
How to compare iPhone VPNs
A VPN app’s reputation alone does not tell you how it will behave on your iPhone. Compare the service and the iOS implementation against the things you actually need:
- Privacy and accountability: Read the privacy policy to understand what data is collected and retained. Look for independently assessed claims, and establish who operates the service and what its policies say about activity logs.
- iOS app and protocols: Check whether the app is easy to use and which protocols it supports. A provider’s general claims do not automatically establish how every feature works on iOS.
- Connection failure and leaks: Check whether the app has a kill switch on your iOS version and what happens if the VPN connection drops. A feature label is not a substitute for testing behavior and possible leaks.
- Performance and daily use: Consider speed, reliability and battery impact in the places and situations where you use your phone. Results can vary with network conditions, location and server choice.
- Devices and restrictions: Compare simultaneous-device limits, server choice and any free-plan restrictions against the devices and locations you need.
- Total cost: Check the full billing period, renewal price, refund terms and availability for your region—not only a short-term or introductory figure.
- Streaming: Treat access as changeable. A VPN recommendation for streaming does not guarantee that a particular service or library will work; follow the streaming service’s terms.
Testing approaches also differ. Security.org says it tested more than 50 iPhone VPNs and describes checking speed, streaming, security, usability, battery impact and compatibility with Apple features. Security.org’s iPhone VPN guide Macworld says it tests VPNs on iPhone, iPad and Mac using benchmarks and everyday scenarios such as browsing, public Wi-Fi, streaming and switching devices. Macworld’s iPhone and iPad VPN guide RTINGS says it has published reviews of more than 20 VPN services since 2025 and describes a process involving research, testing, engineering and editorial checks. What a VPN does—and what it asks you to trust
A VPN routes supported traffic through a VPN provider. That can change the network path and the address websites see, but it does not make you anonymous or prevent all tracking. Apple’s guidance is direct: “It is important that you only use a VPN service you trust.” Apple warns that while a VPN configuration is active, the provider may be able to see, intercept and modify online activity. Read the provider’s privacy policy and assess its claims before routing traffic through it. Apple’s VPN privacy guidance
iCloud Private Relay is not interchangeable with a full VPN. The Independent describes Private Relay as protecting Safari traffic, whereas a VPN can cover traffic across apps. Neither description means that all tracking is prevented or that a user is guaranteed anonymity. The Independent’s iPhone VPN guide

Install a VPN on iPhone
Apple says a VPN configuration can be installed through an App Store app or added manually in Settings. The manual configuration path is:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Open Settings.
- Go to General > VPN & Device Management > VPN.
- Tap Add VPN Configuration, then enter the details supplied by your VPN provider or administrator.
Most people choosing a consumer service will use its App Store app and follow its setup prompts. Manual configuration requires the correct settings from the provider; it does not itself supply a VPN service. Apple’s security documentation also describes IKEv2/IPsec authentication options and SSL-VPN through an appropriate App Store app. Its documentation covers VPN On Demand and managed per-app VPN as well; those enterprise deployment features should not be assumed to be available in a consumer VPN app. Apple’s VPN security documentation, published January 28, 2026.

Bottom line: decide by priority, not by a single ranking
Start with your main requirement, then verify the current iOS features, privacy terms and full cost for the service that appears to fit. RTINGS’ use-case picks and The Independent’s ExpressVPN verdict differ because publications weigh priorities and methods differently; neither settles a universal winner. If you need a particular streaming library, treat access as uncertain rather than promised.
