Short answer: Comparitech’s June 2026 checks found that six VPNs accessed Hulu, with ExpressVPN ranked first in its scoring. That is a dated test result, not a promise that Hulu will work with any VPN for you: Hulu says it does not work with anonymizers or proxy services, and it directs users identified as using one to disable it.
If you are choosing a VPN, treat the comparison below as a starting point, not a guarantee of access. If you already have a VPN and see a Hulu VPN or proxy error, try the provider’s troubleshooting steps—but be prepared for Hulu to continue blocking the connection.

Why does Hulu say it can’t be used through a VPN or proxy?
Hulu’s Help Center states, “Hulu doesn’t work with anonymizers or proxy services.” It says users identified as using such a service need to disable it to stream. That is Hulu’s stated service position; it should not be read as a broader legal conclusion about VPN use.

Hulu also describes its standard service as intended for members of a single U.S. household. Hulu and Hulu Premium subscribers can stream in the U.S., including Puerto Rico and U.S. military bases. Hulu Live TV has different geographic limitations. A VPN subscription does not change Hulu’s account, household, location, or subscription requirements.

VPN access reports can become outdated: a streaming service may detect or block an endpoint after it worked in a test. Neither a provider’s support page nor a third-party benchmark can guarantee that a particular server, device, plan, or connection will work for you.
Which VPNs accessed Hulu in Comparitech’s June 2026 checks?
Comparitech benchmarked eight VPNs for this Hulu use case and showed results for six. Its composite scores draw on Hulu unblock rate, U.S. speed retention, Disney+ U.S. unblock rate, U.S. latency (p50), and effective monthly price on the best plan. Comparitech says its speed and latency measurements use benchmark hosts; your ISP and routing can produce different results.

| VPN | Comparitech composite score | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | 8.9/10 | Comparitech’s top pick; it reported a 100% Hulu unblock rate across its checks. |
| Proton VPN | 8.6/10 | Included among the six VPNs Comparitech listed as accessing Hulu. |
| Surfshark | 8.5/10 | Included among the six VPNs Comparitech listed as accessing Hulu. |
| NordVPN | 8.2/10 | Included among the six VPNs Comparitech listed as accessing Hulu. |
| Total VPN | 7.9/10 | Included among the six VPNs Comparitech listed as accessing Hulu. |
| IPVanish | 7.9/10 | Included among the six VPNs Comparitech listed as accessing Hulu. |
These are Comparitech’s June 2026 results and scoring, not universal ratings or guarantees of current access. The publisher excluded Hotspot Shield because of incomplete data and CyberGhost because it could not unblock Hulu in its checks. Prices and promotions can change; Comparitech’s inclusion of effective monthly price in its rubric does not establish a current offer.

- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
- Check device support. ExpressVPN lists apps for Fire TV Stick and other platforms. Its MediaStreamer is a DNS service, not a VPN, and is described for devices that do not natively support VPN apps. Neither an app nor a DNS option is a cure for Hulu blocking.
- Keep the subscriptions separate. A VPN does not include Hulu. Surfshark says users need an active Hulu subscription as well as its VPN service.
- Review current terms before paying. Plans, prices, app support, and access can change. Confirm details directly with the provider before subscribing.
- Expect access to vary. A provider’s inclusion in Comparitech’s checks is evidence of that publisher’s results at that time, not a guarantee for your location, device, server, or Hulu plan.
What to try when Hulu doesn’t work with your VPN
These provider-documented steps may help with a connection or playback error, but they cannot ensure Hulu will accept a VPN endpoint. If Hulu has identified the connection as an anonymizer or proxy, its stated direction is to disable that service.
ExpressVPN troubleshooting
ExpressVPN’s Hulu guide suggests trying U.S. locations in this order: San Francisco, Washington DC, New York, then Los Angeles – 1. Force-close and reopen the Hulu app when changing locations. If the error persists, its further suggestions include logging out, restarting the device, logging back in, trying playback in a browser, and contacting ExpressVPN support.

Follow device-specific instructions for the device you use.
Surfshark troubleshooting
Surfshark suggests clearing browser cache and, if login fails, disconnecting from the VPN to log in before reconnecting. Its guidance also notes that a compatible device and active Surfshark subscription are needed, while Hulu access still requires a Hulu subscription.
