There is no established best VPN for FFXIV. Square Enix’s guidance points to the internet route between your connection and the game servers as one possible cause of lag and packet loss. A VPN may offer a different route, but it is only worth keeping if comparable tests show steadier gameplay without unacceptable added latency.
Can a VPN fix FFXIV lag?
Sometimes a VPN changes the route your game traffic takes to the server. If a problematic point lies on your normal route, a different route could help; if the issue is elsewhere, a VPN may do nothing or make latency worse. That makes a VPN a troubleshooting variable, not a guaranteed fix or an official Square Enix recommendation.

Square Enix describes packet loss as data generated by your hardware or returned by the FFXIV server being lost along the internet path. It says packet loss can make the screen stop for several seconds or make the game feel frequently laggy. The guidance also notes that FFXIV’s real-time inputs can make network problems more noticeable than delays in buffered video. Square Enix’s packet-loss guidance was updated July 6, 2022.

- The internet path can be the problem. In a North American connection-quality notice, Square Enix said its teams found no issue with the game servers or data center, but found degraded connection quality at certain internet points depending on the route used. The notice identifies May 26 but does not establish a year in the visible content, so it should not be read as proof of a current outage. Read the notice.
- Square Enix recommends gathering connection details. Its support guidance says the cause may lie in the communication path and advises contacting your ISP as well as submitting a report. Use the packet-loss and lag support route.
- A VPN can also be a troubleshooting variable. In a June 5, 2024 support-forum reply about a particular issue, a Square Enix moderator listed VPN use among several possible sources of game-data interference. That is not a universal finding that VPNs cause problems, nor a general policy ruling. See the forum response.
- No provider ranking or performance figure is established. The official sources do not compare VPN providers or report measured FFXIV latency improvements. They also do not establish that VPN use is prohibited; the retrieved North American User Agreement makes players responsible for compatible equipment and internet access but does not specifically rule on VPNs. How to tell whether a VPN test is worthwhile
First check whether the issue is specific to FFXIV
If other online services also become slow or unstable at the same time, the cause may not be a route unique to the game. Note whether the problem affects only FFXIV, which character or data center is involved, when it occurs, and whether it repeats. A VPN test is more informative when you can compare a specific recurring problem rather than a one-off slowdown.

Collect the connection details Square Enix requests
For PC and Mac players, Square Enix asks for traceroute results and details such as ISP, connection type, country, state or city, approximate time and time zone, and how often the issue occurs. Its guidance says location and ISP information are more useful for investigating routing than hardware specifications. Save those details before changing your route so you have a baseline.
Run a controlled with-and-without comparison
- Record a baseline. At a time when the problem usually occurs, note your connection type, approximate latency, whether you see stutters or disconnections, and any available traceroute results.
- Change only the route. Connect through a VPN endpoint and repeat the same activity under comparable conditions. If the service and your platform support routing only selected app traffic, verify that feature in the provider’s current documentation before relying on it.
- Repeat at comparable times. Internet congestion changes over time, so one favorable session does not establish that the VPN caused the improvement. Compare multiple sessions where practical.
- Keep it only if the result is useful. Look for a repeatable improvement in stability, not just a different ping number. If gameplay is no steadier or added latency is unacceptable, disconnect and continue troubleshooting without it.
What to send Square Enix and your ISP
Square Enix’s packet-loss guidance asks for enough detail to connect symptoms with a route and time. Provide the information through its support route, and contact your ISP as Square Enix recommends.

- Traceroute results, if you play on PC or Mac.
- Your ISP and connection type, such as wired or wireless.
- Your country and, where applicable, state or city.
- The approximate date and time of the problem, including time zone.
- How often the stutters, lag or packet loss occur, and whether other services are affected.
- Whether the symptoms changed when using a VPN, including the endpoint region and test times.
Keep the description factual: a VPN comparison can help identify whether a route change correlates with a change in symptoms, but it does not by itself prove which network operator or point is responsible.

How to choose a VPN for a route test
Because no provider-specific FFXIV results are established, choosing a supposed “best” provider by a ranking or latency claim would go beyond the available evidence. If you decide to test one, verify these practical points in the provider’s current documentation before subscribing:

- It offers per-app routing only if you need or expect that control, and confirms compatibility with your platform.

- You can run a repeatable comparison and stop using it if stability does not improve.
Square Enix’s published troubleshooting guidance focuses on diagnosing the connection path, not endorsing a VPN. Treat any service as an experiment for your particular ISP, location, platform and time of day—not as a general FFXIV fix.
