There is no evidence-based “best VPN for DJI drones” ranking. DJI does not recommend or compare VPN providers in its published privacy materials, and the available comparisons do not establish that any VPN works better with DJI Fly or improves drone performance. A VPN may protect network traffic from an internet-connected phone or controller to the VPN service, but DJI’s Local Data Mode is the relevant DJI app control for disconnecting the flight app from the internet.
Do you need a VPN to fly a DJI drone?
No. A VPN is not presented as a requirement for flying a DJI drone, and it does not improve flight range, make a flight legal, or change Remote ID obligations. It is a network-privacy tool for an internet-connected device. Its specific effect on a given phone, controller, DJI app version, or feature set has not been established here.

For DJI app data controls, use the settings DJI provides. For flight safety and legal compliance, check current official aviation and government information for your location rather than relying on a VPN or a map in the flight app.

When enabled on a compatible phone or controller, a VPN routes that device’s internet traffic through the VPN service. That limited network role is different from controlling what DJI Fly collects, whether the app can reach the internet, or whether a flight is permitted. No provider-specific encryption implementation, DJI controller behavior, or change in DJI feature availability is established by the cited material.

DJI’s device and app compatibility information is specific to supported aircraft, mobile devices, and operating-system versions; it does not discuss VPN applications. Do not assume that a VPN works with a particular controller or DJI Fly setup without checking the device and app documentation and testing the configuration safely on the ground.
Use DJI Local Data Mode to disconnect the flight app
Consumer DJI Fly
DJI describes Local Data Mode as a flight-app feature, not a VPN. Its consumer privacy guide gives this path: DJI Fly → Settings → Notification and Privacy → Local Data Mode. DJI says activating it disconnects the flight app from the internet, which can disable cloud features. For fully offline use, DJI also says to turn off the device’s Wi-Fi and cellular connections.

DJI says activation requires account information including email, password, and the drone serial number. It describes flight logs, images, and videos as optional and not collected by default, and says the app performs an approximate location check at activation to load local maps and geofencing zones. According to DJI’s published guide, the app applies a random offset within a 5–10 km radius to the operator’s actual location, uses that data temporarily, and does not store it on DJI servers. These are DJI’s descriptions of its practices, not independently verified findings. (DJI Trust Center: User Guide for Consumer Drone Privacy Controls)
DJI Pilot 2 for enterprise use
DJI Pilot 2 offers Standard Mode, Restricted Network Mode, and Local Data Mode. DJI says Restricted Network Mode closes most data services while retaining functions such as maps, network RTK, and custom livestreaming. Pilot 2 also has offline workflows for map and firmware data, including importing map data and transferring files by SD card, plus offline GEO Zone unlocking for enterprise operators. These are Pilot 2 capabilities; they should not be assumed to exist in consumer DJI Fly. (DJI Enterprise: DJI Pilot 2 offline operations)

VPN versus Local Data Mode
| Option | What it does | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| VPN on a phone or controller | Routes the device’s internet traffic through a VPN service; actual app and device behavior depends on the setup. | It does not, by itself, disconnect DJI Fly from the internet, control DJI app data settings, improve flight range, or establish legal compliance. |
| DJI Fly Local Data Mode | DJI says it disconnects the flight app from the internet and can disable cloud features. | It does not replace checking current flight restrictions or prove that every DJI product supports the same offline features. |
| Device Wi-Fi and cellular turned off | DJI recommends disabling these connections for fully offline use. | Offline operation can limit network-dependent functions and may mean the app lacks current online information. |
Does DJI Fly work with a VPN?
The available DJI compatibility information does not address VPN apps, and the cited material does not verify DJI Fly behavior through a VPN on any particular phone-controller combination. App support can vary with the mobile device, operating-system version, DJI Fly version, controller, VPN app, and enabled features. Check DJI’s current DJI Fly download and compatibility information and the VPN provider’s device documentation; neither should be treated as proof of a tested combination.
If you want to evaluate your own setup, do so before a flight: install and update the relevant apps, connect the VPN, open DJI Fly, and verify that required maps, account functions, and controller connections behave as expected. Do not troubleshoot connectivity in the air or assume an app feature will remain available after enabling a VPN or offline mode.

How to choose a VPN without a DJI-specific ranking
Because no provider has been verified as “best for DJI,” choose based on ordinary VPN requirements rather than claimed drone performance. General comparison coverage discusses criteria such as operating-system support, privacy practices, kill-switch behavior, protocol options, connection reliability, support, renewal pricing, refund terms, and availability in your country. Those criteria can help select a VPN for your device, but do not demonstrate DJI compatibility. (TechRadar VPN comparison; Tom’s Guide VPN deals)

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Confirm the VPN has an app for the operating system on your phone or controller.
- Read the provider’s current privacy policy and technical documentation instead of relying on a broad “no logs” slogan.
- Check whether it offers a kill switch and protocols you understand, and whether those features are available on your device.
- Review renewal pricing, refund conditions, support availability, and local access restrictions directly with the provider; promotions and terms change.
- Test the app and any DJI features you rely on while grounded. Do not interpret a successful VPN connection as proof of DJI endorsement or flight performance.
A VPN does not satisfy aviation rules or replace current airspace checks
DJI’s U.S.-focused Remote ID FAQ says an internet connection is not required for Remote ID to work, though a connection can speed acquisition of the remote controller’s location. DJI also describes firmware, controller or phone location, keeping the app in the foreground, and FAA registration steps for applicable setups. The FAQ says purely recreational operation of an aircraft at or below 0.55 pounds (less than 250 grams) may be exempt from registration and Remote ID; applicability depends on the aircraft and use, so check current FAA requirements. This is U.S.-specific information, not global legal advice. (DJI U.S. Remote ID FAQ)

DJI’s terms describe Flight Environment Data as informational and direct operators to official aviation, government, and aeronautical sources. DJI also says offline users do not receive the latest Flight Environment Data it may be able to provide. Before each flight, verify current restrictions, required authorizations, and local rules through the relevant official sources. A VPN does not make an otherwise prohibited flight permissible.
