Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is no independently verified best-performing VPN for Cuba in 2026. The practical choice is a service with a documented obfuscation option, apps for your devices, clear privacy documentation, and setup you can complete before you travel. A Cuba-focused guide names ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Proton VPN, but the available evidence does not establish which works most reliably on Cuban hotel Wi-Fi or mobile data.
Install, activate, and test your chosen service before departure. Provider websites or connections may be inaccessible or unreliable once you are in Cuba, and no provider feature description guarantees a working connection there.

What matters when choosing a VPN for Cuba?
Focus on features and preparation rather than an unverified performance ranking. A Cuba-focused secondary guide reports that standard, unobfuscated VPN protocols may fail on some networks; NordVPN says its obfuscated servers hide VPN protocol signatures. These are not independent tests of either service in Cuba. [Comparitech’s Cuba VPN guide] [NordVPN’s obfuscated servers information]

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Obfuscation: Check whether the provider offers a mode or servers intended to disguise VPN traffic, and whether you must select them manually.
- Setup and device support: Confirm that the provider has apps for the devices you will take, and learn how to switch protocols or enable any circumvention mode before you leave.
- Privacy documentation: Read the provider’s current privacy policy and look for information about logging and any independent audits. A privacy claim does not prove that a connection will work in Cuba.
- Price and plan limits: Check the provider’s current offer, renewal terms, supported features, and any server or data restrictions directly before subscribing. Prices and plan features can change.
- Backup options: Save setup instructions and support details in advance, and consider whether you need a second provider or a different way to connect if the VPN fails.
Comparitech’s guide reports differences between hotel Wi-Fi and mobile networks, but current independent comparative tests were not available to verify those reported differences. [Comparitech’s Cuba VPN guide]

How do the named VPNs compare?
The available documentation supports a feature comparison, not a ranking of Cuba performance. Provider statements describe their own services; the Cuba-focused guide is a secondary source and does not amount to reproducible testing.
| Service | What the available sources establish | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Proton says it offers VPN servers in Cuba, apps for major platforms, a kill switch, and a Free plan usable from Cuba. It says the Free plan does not include Cuban exit servers. [Proton VPN’s Cuba page] | These are provider statements, not independent Cuba performance tests. Confirm the current plan details and features before subscribing. |
| NordVPN | NordVPN describes obfuscated servers as hiding VPN protocol signatures and provides connection instructions. [NordVPN’s obfuscated servers information] | The documentation does not show that the feature succeeds on Cuban hotel Wi-Fi or mobile data. |
| ExpressVPN | Comparitech’s Cuba-focused guide names ExpressVPN’s Lightway protocol as an obfuscation option. [Comparitech’s Cuba VPN guide] | The available sources do not independently verify ExpressVPN’s documentation or establish Lightway’s performance in Cuba. |
Should you install the VPN before going to Cuba?
Yes. Both Comparitech’s Cuba guide and Proton’s Cuba page warn that VPN-provider sites may be inaccessible from Cuba. Install and sign in before departure so you are not relying on reaching a provider’s site or app store after arrival. [Comparitech’s Cuba VPN guide] [Proton VPN’s Cuba page]

- Choose a plan and install the official app: Do this while you still have reliable access to the provider’s website and app store.
- Sign in and configure it: Learn where to enable any obfuscation or alternative connection mode, and review settings such as the kill switch if your app offers one.
- Test on your own devices: Check that the app connects and that you know how to change modes or troubleshoot. A successful test at home cannot predict performance on a Cuban network.
- Save what you may need offline: Keep setup instructions and relevant account or support information accessible without needing to browse to the provider’s site.
Is there a free VPN for Cuba that actually works?
Proton says its Free plan can be used from Cuba, but that plan does not provide Cuban exit servers. This means Proton distinguishes connecting to its service while in Cuba from appearing to browse with a Cuban IP address. The provider’s statement does not establish a success rate or guarantee access from a particular Cuban network. Check the current plan terms directly. [Proton VPN’s Cuba page]

Can you get a VPN after arriving in Cuba?
It may be difficult. Comparitech and Proton both warn that VPN-provider websites may be inaccessible from Cuba, so downloading an app, subscribing, or retrieving setup instructions after arrival may not be straightforward. That is why installing and testing beforehand is the safer preparation. [Comparitech’s Cuba VPN guide] [Proton VPN’s Cuba page]
Would a travel router help?
A VPN-compatible travel router can share one VPN connection with devices connected to it, which may simplify setup for a group or for devices that do not have convenient VPN apps. GL.iNet documents its Beryl AX (GL-MT3000) as supporting OpenVPN and WireGuard clients. That documentation does not establish compatibility with every VPN provider or show that the router bypasses Cuba-specific filtering; it is optional convenience equipment, not a requirement. Is VPN use legal in Cuba?
The sources available here do not establish the current legal status of VPN use by tourists in Cuba. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights’ 2025 annual report provides broader context on internet access, but it does not determine the legality of VPN use or certify any provider’s operation. Do not treat a provider’s availability statement as legal advice. [IACHR 2025 Annual Report]
The report quotes the 2011 Joint Declaration on Freedom of Expression and the Internet by special rapporteurs from the UN, OSCE, IACHR, and ACHPR: “Access to the Internet is also necessary to promote respect for other rights, such as the rights to education, health care and work, the right to assembly and association, and the right to free elections.” [IACHR 2025 Annual Report]
