Available information supports comparing ExpressVPN, Proton VPN and Progresif’s NordVPN offer, but it does not establish a tested overall winner: current independent speed tests, prices and service-specific reliability are not available.
Choose a VPN based on the job you need it to do
Get a Brunei IP address while abroad
Look for a provider that advertises a Brunei location and check whether that location is physical or virtual. A Brunei IP address can help with services that depend on apparent location, but it does not guarantee access: websites and streaming services may impose their own restrictions and terms.

ExpressVPN advertises a Brunei VPN location. Proton VPN also markets Brunei servers. These are provider statements, not independent tests of access or reliability. ExpressVPN’s Brunei page and Proton VPN’s Brunei page describe their respective offerings.
Connect from Brunei through another country
If you are in Brunei and need an IP address elsewhere, choose an exit country that suits the service or site you are using. A nearby country may be worth considering for distance, but the available sources include no comparative latency or speed measurements for Brunei. Do not treat a provider’s country count or a server map as proof of performance for your connection.

Proton VPN advertises a 30-day refund period for its paid Proton VPN Plus plan. | What the free plan includes and excludes; current plan features, device limits and refund terms; whether the Brunei location is physical or virtual. |

The figures and features above come from provider or reseller pages, not independent verification. ExpressVPN reports coverage in 113 countries; that figure describes its network claim, not a measurement of speed or quality in Brunei. The listed refund periods are advertised terms and can change. See the NordVPN server list for its country listings; a listed country alone does not show where the physical hardware is located.

Check whether a Brunei server is physically in Brunei
A VPN app may show a Brunei location because the assigned IP address is associated with Brunei, even if the server hardware is elsewhere. NordVPN’s server information distinguishes physical and virtual locations, and TechRadar reports that NordVPN’s listed Brunei location is virtual and hosted in London. This is a report about NordVPN’s listing, not proof that every provider’s Brunei location is virtual. If the server’s physical location matters to you, ask the provider directly and check how it labels virtual locations. TechRadar’s NordVPN review discusses the reported location.

Compare privacy, security and practical terms
Before subscribing, compare the details that determine whether a service fits your devices and expectations. Provider feature pages describe what providers say they offer; those claims should not be mistaken for independent audits or performance tests.

- New-Gen WiFi Standard – WiFi 6(802.11ax) standard supporting MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology for better efficiency and throughput.Antenna : External antenna x 4. Processor : Dual-core (4 VPE). Power Supply : AC Input : 110V~240V(50~60Hz), DC Output : 12 V with max. 1.5A current.
- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously

- Privacy and transparency: Read the provider’s current privacy policy and look for relevant audit reports or transparency information. Do not assume a privacy claim has been independently verified unless the supporting evidence is available.
- Security controls: Check whether the plan and apps you intend to use include a kill switch and the protections you want. Proton VPN advertises a kill switch and Secure Core; verify their availability and behavior for your chosen platform and plan.
- Devices and connections: Confirm that current apps support your operating systems and that the plan permits enough simultaneous connections for your household.
- Plan limits and support: Check the free plan’s restrictions, subscription terms, support channels and refund conditions before paying.
- Use-case reliability: Treat streaming, calls and access to specific websites as untested unless backed by credible, relevant testing. A VPN cannot guarantee access to a service or override that service’s terms.
Are VPNs legal in Brunei?
ExpressVPN and Proton VPN say VPN use is legal in Brunei. Those are provider assertions, not an authoritative interpretation of current Brunei law. The available official broadband-policy material supplies infrastructure context; it does not establish current VPN legality or whether VPN traffic is blocked. If legality is central to your decision, verify current rules through an authoritative local source. A VPN does not exempt you from applicable laws or a website’s or streaming service’s terms. ExpressVPN and Proton VPN state their views on legality on their Brunei pages; the National Broadband Policy hosted by the ITU is policy context, not a current legal determination.
How to get a Bruneian IP address from anywhere
- Choose a VPN whose provider currently advertises a Brunei location, and check whether it identifies that location as physical or virtual.
- Install the provider’s official app on your device and sign in with an eligible plan.
- Select Brunei in the app’s location list and connect. The app should indicate that the VPN connection is active.
- Check the resulting IP location with a reputable IP-location service. If it does not appear to be in Brunei, disconnect, try another Brunei server if offered, or contact the provider.
- Check the target service’s own availability and terms. A Brunei IP address does not ensure that a service will accept the connection.
What is the best VPN for Brunei?
There is no evidence here for a defensible universal winner. For a Brunei IP address, compare ExpressVPN and Proton VPN’s advertised Brunei locations and verify physical versus virtual placement. For a local purchase route, check Progresif’s current NordVPN eligibility and total recurring cost. Choose only after confirming the terms that matter to you; the available material does not establish independent performance, current subscription prices or streaming reliability.
