There is no single agreed winner for the best VPN for Android phones in 2026. RTINGS selects Mullvad as its best tested option. That is an editorial judgment, not a universal verdict. The right choice depends on whether you value Android controls, privacy-oriented design, streaming access, or a free plan—and on how much weight you give each kind of evidence.
Which VPN is best for Android phones?
For an easy-to-use Android option, TechRadar describes ExpressVPN as beginner-friendly; Top10VPN also places ExpressVPN first in its Android ranking. RTINGS names Mullvad its best tested Android VPN, emphasizing a privacy-oriented approach. These rankings differ because publishers use their own review criteria. Treat them as starting points, not proof that one provider will be best on every phone, network, or use case.

- Consider Mullvad if a privacy-oriented approach matters more to you than reliable access to streaming services; RTINGS says streaming platforms may challenge or block recognized VPN addresses.
- Consider Proton VPN if you want Android controls such as split tunneling and a kill switch, or are evaluating a free plan with no data limit according to its official product page.
- Compare NordVPN and ExpressVPN if speed results interest you, but read the test conditions carefully: the published Android figures came from one London test setup.

Android app controls
Look for controls that match how you use your phone: a kill switch or Android’s system-level option to block connections without a VPN, split tunneling if you need selected apps to bypass the tunnel, and an app that makes connection status clear. Confirm that a feature is documented for the Android app specifically; desktop features do not automatically apply to mobile.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Proton’s official Android page lists Always-on VPN and a kill switch, NetShield, split tunneling, and Tor-enabled servers. These are provider-described features, not independent test findings. Proton says its app is available through Google Play, F-Droid, or a GitHub APK: Proton VPN for Android.
Privacy evidence is not one thing
Open-source code, an independent audit, a privacy policy, and measured leak testing answer different questions. A published app or policy does not by itself establish that a service has no leaks, and a single test does not verify every app version or device. Treat provider claims as claims, and look for evidence tied to the Android app and the specific behavior you care about.

A 2026 MVPNalyzer presentation hosted by NDSS reports findings from a defined sample: 281 operational free VPN apps collected through 40 Google Play searches and tested on Android 14. The researchers report that 61 apps exchanged cleartext traffic and 29 leaked virtually all websites visited. Those results flag real risks in that sample; they do not establish that all free VPN apps are unsafe. NDSS: MVPNalyzer.
Streaming and location access
A VPN changes the apparent network location of a connection, but that does not guarantee a particular streaming service will work. Access can vary with the service, exit location, and geography. RTINGS notes that streaming platforms may challenge or block VPN addresses, a relevant trade-off when considering Mullvad’s privacy-focused profile.

Speed claims need their test conditions
NordVPN’s August 10, 2026 report summarizes a VPN comparison by Artifact Security, which it says was published in June 2026. The comparison used 55 routes across five origin regions, but its Android performance section reports testing from London. The reported Android median speeds were:
| Provider | Median download speed | Median upload speed |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 526.6 Mbps | 223.3 Mbps |
| ExpressVPN | 494.8 Mbps | 148.9 Mbps |
These are results from that reported London setup, not a prediction for every phone, carrier, Wi-Fi connection, or destination. The report also says NordVPN had the fastest measured connection time among the providers tested, averaging 1.8 seconds. Because this is a third-party test summarized in a NordVPN report, keep that provenance in mind when weighing the figures. NordVPN’s report on the Artifact Security test.

Free plans make different trade-offs, so check the current allowance and controls rather than assuming every free VPN works the same way. Proton’s official page says its free plan has no data limits, while TechRadar’s guide describes limited server locations and no manual location choice. That combination may suit basic use if the available locations work for you, but it offers less flexibility than choosing a specific location. Plan features can change; check the providers’ current terms before relying on them.

Free VPN apps also deserve careful scrutiny. The MVPNalyzer findings above concern a sample of operational free apps, not every free service. Prefer clear documentation and evidence relevant to the Android app, and avoid treating an app’s presence in Google Play as proof of privacy or leak protection. How to add Android’s system-level VPN protection
Android can keep a VPN connection on and, on supported devices, block traffic when the VPN is disconnected. Menu names and locations vary by Android version and phone manufacturer, so use your phone’s Settings search if these labels do not match.
- Open Settings and go to Network & internet, then VPN. On some phones, search Settings for “VPN.”
- Tap the settings or gear icon beside the VPN you use.
- Enable Always-on VPN if the option is available.
- If offered, enable Block connections without VPN. This can stop network traffic when the VPN tunnel is unavailable, but may also interrupt apps or connectivity until the VPN reconnects.
Split tunneling is a separate app-level choice: it can let selected apps bypass the VPN, which may be useful when an app needs your regular connection. Check which apps are excluded before relying on the VPN to cover all phone traffic.
Quick Recap
What to verify before subscribing
- Confirm the Android app includes the specific controls you want, rather than relying on a provider’s desktop feature list.
- Check whether a free plan lets you choose locations and whether its current data limit and features fit your use.
- Test the locations and services you actually need; rankings and speed results cannot guarantee access or performance on your connection.
- Review the current checkout price, renewal amount, billing period, device limit, and refund terms directly with the provider. The cited comparisons do not establish a complete current price comparison.
