Choose a resolution and frame rate your connection can sustain, set vMix’s H.264 video bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for that exact format, and check stream health during a real test. YouTube’s current guidance recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps or 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps, with a two-second keyframe interval.
Recommended vMix settings to start with
| Setting | Starting choice | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution and frame rate | 1920×1080 at 30 fps if your upload can sustain the matching bitrate; otherwise choose a lower supported resolution or frame rate. | The encoder’s output size should match your production output. Use the YouTube bitrate row for the exact resolution and frame rate you select. |
| Video encoder | FFMPEG in vMix, with H.264 video. | vMix lists FFMPEG as recommended. H.264 is a conservative, broadly compatible starting point under YouTube’s general encoder guidance. |
| Video bitrate | 10 Mbps for H.264 1080p30; 4 Mbps for H.264 240p–720p30. | These are YouTube’s published recommendations for those formats, not India-specific broadband requirements. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. | YouTube recommends a two-second interval and sets four seconds as the maximum. |
| Audio | AAC; select the audio source and bitrate in vMix. | vMix documents AAC support. The cited guidance does not establish one mandatory audio bitrate for this use case. |
| Network buffer | Use the vMix buffer setting if the maximum network speed is unreliable; adjust cautiously. | The buffer affects latency and may absorb some network variation, but it cannot add upload capacity or guarantee a continuous connection. |
See YouTube’s live encoder settings, vMix’s streaming quality settings and vMix’s streaming settings guide for the platform and software guidance behind these choices.

Choose resolution and bitrate for the connection you actually have
Measure upload performance where the vMix computer will run—not on a phone elsewhere in the house or at another premises. Broadband performance can vary by location, time, Wi-Fi conditions and other active network use. An advertised plan speed is not proof that the stream can sustain its encoder bitrate continuously.

Use 1920×1080 at 30 fps when the connection can sustain YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate of 10 Mbps and your production system can encode reliably. If the upload fluctuates near that target, lowering the output is safer than selecting a bitrate the connection cannot maintain.

240p–720p at 30 fps
For these formats, YouTube recommends 4 Mbps for H.264. Select the resolution that meets your visual needs and test it under realistic network use. Do not treat the 720p30 value as a recommendation for 720p60; match the actual frame rate to the corresponding row in YouTube’s current guidance.
The cited official sources provide encoder settings, not an India-specific bitrate table or a minimum broadband plan speed. They also do not establish a fixed headroom percentage. Keep more upload capacity available than the encoder target where possible, and use observed stream health—not the plan’s advertised speed alone—to judge stability.

Configure vMix and connect it to YouTube
vMix documents two routes: create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio and enter its stream key in vMix, or select YouTube Live Stream Now as the destination in vMix. The labels and screens can change between versions, so follow the controls shown in your installed version.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose the output format. In vMix, set the production output size and frame rate to the format you intend to send. Select the matching stream encode size; do not configure an encoder output that conflicts with the production output.
- Set the stream encoder. Open vMix’s streaming settings, select FFMPEG, and choose H.264 video. Set the bitrate to the YouTube recommendation for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds and keep it at or below four seconds.
- Configure audio. Choose the intended audio source and AAC encoding in vMix. Set an audio bitrate appropriate to your configuration; the sources cited here do not designate a single mandatory value.
- Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and copy its stream key, then enter that key in vMix. Alternatively, choose YouTube Live Stream Now in vMix. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if exposed.
- Run a realistic test. Test with the same audio, motion, resolution and frame rate planned for the continuous stream. YouTube advises: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Monitor the stream health display and any messages in YouTube Studio during the test.
- Start the broadcast and keep watch. Confirm YouTube receives the stream and that audio and picture are correct. For a 24/7 operation, monitor stream health and the source computer and network; successful startup does not establish that a session will remain connected for a full day.

Test for continuous use, not just a successful start
A short test can reveal setup errors, but it cannot prove a 24-hour connection. Test for a meaningful period during normal network use, including other devices and workloads that will be active during the broadcast. The official guidance cited here does not prescribe a required test duration or a specific reserve of upload bandwidth.
- Run the test at the encoder’s actual premises and on the network path you will use for the stream.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages throughout the test, not only at startup.
- Check the stream with representative movement and audio; a static or silent test may not reflect the real production.
- Verify that the vMix computer can encode the chosen output reliably. Hardware encoder availability and limitations vary with GPU generation, so check your system rather than assuming a particular encoder is present.
- If archiving matters, confirm YouTube’s current live archive behavior before relying on a complete saved 24-hour video. The cited sources do not establish a current automatic archive limit for continuous streams.
Troubleshooting common stream problems
YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops
Check sustained upload at the vMix computer, competing network use, and whether the chosen bitrate matches the actual output format. If performance is unstable, lower the resolution or frame rate and use the bitrate YouTube recommends for that format. A larger vMix network buffer may help with some speed variability, but it cannot compensate for insufficient upload capacity.

The picture stutters or the encoder struggles
Confirm the output resolution and frame rate are within the computer’s encoding capacity. Reduce the output format if the system cannot encode consistently, and verify available hardware encoding support for your GPU and vMix configuration.

YouTube does not receive the stream
Verify that vMix is using the correct YouTube destination and current stream key. If you scheduled a stream in YouTube Studio, confirm you copied the key for that broadcast. Treat a key that may have been exposed as compromised and replace it.
The saved replay is incomplete or unavailable
Do not assume a continuous live stream will produce a complete 24-hour VOD. Confirm YouTube’s current archive behavior for continuous streams and, if needed, plan a separate local recording workflow only after checking storage and system capacity.
