For 720p YouTube Live, start with H.264 at 30 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), a bitrate your connection can sustain, and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s current live guidance recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 720p at either 30 or 60 fps and lists 3 Mbps as the minimum. Those are encoder targets, not a guarantee that your Indian broadband connection can deliver them reliably. Test the actual connection and stream before relying on it.
Recommended settings for a 720p YouTube Live stream
Use these as targets when the installed VLC build exposes the relevant controls. YouTube’s figures below are for live ingestion, not video uploads.

Use the recommended bitrate only if your sustained upload capacity can support it with room for fluctuations and other household traffic. The headroom is practical advice, not a YouTube-prescribed percentage.

Can VLC reliably stream directly to YouTube Live?
VLC’s Desktop User Documentation 3.0 describes transcoding and streaming output in general. Its documented example streams a transcoded file over HTTP, not a YouTube Live RTMPS workflow. VideoLAN’s output-format matrix lists H.264 and AAC support, but that alone does not establish a reliable direct YouTube setup for every current VLC build or platform.

Check the controls in your installed VLC version rather than assuming its generic streaming output matches YouTube’s requirements. If you cannot set the needed codec, bitrate or rate control, keyframe interval, audio options, and RTMPS destination, use an encoder with a documented YouTube Live workflow. Even when VLC exposes the controls, test the exact build and stream before an important broadcast.
How to choose a bitrate on Indian broadband
There is no single India-wide broadband bitrate that guarantees a stable 720p live stream. The relevant measurement is the sustained upload available on the connection you will use, at the time you will stream—not a brief peak or the advertised download speed.

- Run an upload speed test close to the event, using the same wired or Wi-Fi setup you plan to stream from.
- Repeat under realistic conditions, including the other devices and services likely to share the connection during the stream.
- Choose a bitrate below the reliably sustained upload capacity so ordinary fluctuations and competing traffic do not consume all available bandwidth.
- Begin with 720p30. Try 720p60 only if the content benefits from smoother motion and your test shows the connection and encoder can sustain it.
- Run a representative test stream and inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. Adjust based on what it reports, then test again.
As YouTube Help puts it: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” A momentary result is less useful than a test that reflects the conditions of the real broadcast.

Set up and test the stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open Live Control Room. Copy the current server or ingest URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- In VLC’s streaming or output settings, select the destination and transport supported by your build. Use the current YouTube URL and key; never share or publish the key.
- Configure 1280 × 720 at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, and a video bitrate the measured connection can sustain. YouTube’s H.264 live guidance recommends 8 Mbps and lists 3 Mbps as the minimum for 720p30 and 720p60.
- If the controls are available, set a two-second keyframe interval, keeping it at or below four seconds.
- Configure one AAC or MP3 audio stream. For stereo, use YouTube’s general recommendation of 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz.
- Run a private or unlisted test with representative movement and audio. Check Live Control Room for stream health and warnings about video delivery, codec, bitrate, audio, or keyframes.
- If the test is unstable, lower the video bitrate first. If needed, switch from 60 to 30 fps or reduce resolution, then repeat the test. Keep the highest quality that remains stable in representative conditions.
Diagnose common stream-health problems

Keep live and upload bitrate guidance separate
YouTube’s upload-encoding table gives different values from its live-ingestion table. For SDR 720p uploads, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for standard frame rates and 7.5 Mbps for high frame rates. Those are upload recommendations; they do not replace the live H.264 guidance of 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30 or 720p60.

Use only video and audio you have the rights or permission to stream. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if it includes copyrighted material without authorization. Before broadcasting, check YouTube’s current rules and your stream’s status in Live Control Room; a technically healthy encoder does not establish that the content is permitted.
