There is no single best virtual keyboard for every device. Start with the keyboard built into your phone, tablet, or touchscreen PC, then consider an alternative only if it supports your language, preferred input style, and the apps you use. Privacy settings and the option to use a physical keyboard also matter.
What a virtual keyboard does
A virtual keyboard is software that lets you enter text on a touchscreen or with another pointing device. On Android, it is called a soft input method: it appears when a text field receives focus, and an app can tell the system what kind of input it expects, such as an email address or phone number. Apps can also request keyboard behavior such as autocorrection or a Done or Next action. Android supports physical keyboards too, which can be useful with tablets and larger screens. Android Developers documentation describes this system.

Windows offers both a touch keyboard, designed for tapping with a finger or pen, and the On-Screen Keyboard, a separate software keyboard. Microsoft discusses software-keyboard interaction in its keyboard interaction guidance.

Android: start with Gboard or the keyboard already installed
Android supports soft input methods, so the available keyboard choices depend on the device and its software. Google’s Gboard Help covers features and settings such as changing languages, swipe typing, voice typing, translation as you type, handwriting, and writing tools. Availability can vary by device, language, and app; the help topics do not establish that every feature works everywhere.

iPhone and iPad: use Apple’s keyboard or enable a keyboard extension
iOS and iPadOS allow users to install and enable third-party keyboard extensions, select more than one keyboard, and switch between them. These extensions cannot be used in secure text fields or phone-number fields. Apple’s custom-keyboard extension model is not supported in macOS. See Apple’s virtual-keyboard guidance.

Some layouts are unavailable in some languages, and swipe typing is not supported in all languages. Check Microsoft’s touch-keyboard guidance for the relevant Windows version. Its page also notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; use current Windows support information for lifecycle questions rather than treating Windows 10 instructions as current support advice.
How to choose a virtual keyboard
- Check compatibility first. Confirm that the keyboard is built in or installable on your operating system and works in the apps and fields you need. On iPhone and iPad, custom keyboards are excluded from secure text fields and phone-number fields.
- Verify the exact language and layout. A language may have multiple layouts, and features such as swipe typing or handwriting may not be available for every language or device.
- Choose an input style that fits the task. Tap typing, gesture typing, voice, and handwriting are distinct options. Use only the methods documented for your keyboard and available in your apps.
- Consider screen space and posture. On Windows touchscreens, larger default keys, a split layout, or a movable compact layout may suit different ways of holding or using the device. These are ergonomic options, not evidence of a speed advantage.
- Decide whether a physical keyboard is more practical. Android supports attached hardware keyboards. On a tablet or large screen, one may be preferable when you have room for it; a virtual keyboard remains useful when no physical keyboard is attached.
- Review privacy disclosures and permissions. Check the provider’s privacy information and the permissions requested by the keyboard, not just its feature list.
What Apple’s custom-keyboard security controls mean
Apple says custom keyboards run as extensions and, by default, use a restrictive sandbox that blocks network access, network-operating services, and APIs that could allow typing data to be sent out. A developer may request Open Access, which requires the user’s consent. Apps can also prohibit third-party keyboards. These controls describe Apple’s platform; they do not establish the data practices of a particular keyboard provider or the protections on other platforms. Apple’s security documentation, published December 19, 2024, explains the controls.

Do you need an accessory?
Most virtual keyboards are software settings or apps, so they do not require a separate product. A touchscreen stylus may be useful if you prefer handwriting in a compatible Windows handwriting panel, which accepts a pen or fingertip. It is an optional handwriting aid, not a general typing upgrade; check that a stylus works with your particular touchscreen before buying one.
