The best virtual-background setup depends on how you stream: use OBS Studio with a chroma key if you have a physical green screen and want to build the effect into a scene; use XSplit Broadcaster for removal or chroma key inside a Windows broadcast app; choose VCam for a separate camera effect that can feed OBS; or consider NVIDIA Broadcast if your PC meets its current RTX and software requirements. There is no universal winner—check compatibility and test the result in your actual production scene.
Three ways to handle a live-stream background
Chroma key in your production app
A chroma key makes a selected color transparent so the layers behind your camera source show through. It is the straightforward route when you have a physical green screen, can light it evenly, and want to control the effect as part of your live-production scene. A green screen is optional overall, not a universal requirement for virtual backgrounds.
Automatic removal in a separate camera app
A camera-processing app can remove, blur, or replace the background before your production app receives the camera feed. This can avoid a physical screen, but adds another app or virtual device to configure and check for compatibility.
Background processing inside a broadcast app
Some live-production applications offer both automatic removal and chroma key in the same workflow. This avoids treating a general-purpose scene tool as if it were a dedicated removal product, though the best fit still depends on your operating system and machine.

Choose by setup, not by a universal ranking
- You already use OBS and have a green screen: try a chroma key in your existing scene first. Expect to adjust keying and lighting; inspect the edges around hair, clothing, and movement.
- You use Windows and want effects within a broadcast app: compare XSplit’s automatic removal with its chroma key option if you own a green screen. Confirm the current requirements and test on your machine.
- You want a separate camera effect feeding OBS: VCam documents an OBS plugin workflow; enable its virtual camera as required by that method, and check the current integration instructions.
- You have eligible NVIDIA RTX hardware: check NVIDIA Broadcast’s live hardware and driver requirements, then confirm that your chosen production app sees its virtual camera.
- You do not want a physical backdrop: XSplit’s documented automatic removal works without a green screen; VCam and NVIDIA Broadcast are also camera-processing routes. Verify availability and compatibility before committing.
Set up and test the effect before going live
- Confirm the route: decide whether you will key a physical green screen in your production scene or process the camera through a separate app or supported broadcast-app feature.
- Check the current requirements: confirm OS, GPU, driver, app version, and production-app support on the vendor’s current pages. Do not assume a listed compatible app or minimum specification guarantees smooth output on your complete scene.
- Connect the right camera source: for a separate processor, select its virtual camera in your production app. For VCam’s documented OBS plugin workflow, enable the virtual camera. If using OBS chroma key, add the camera to the scene and apply the key to that source.
- Choose the desired result: test removal, blur, or replacement where the software offers those modes. For a replacement, check that the background asset’s format is supported by the current version.
- Check edges and movement: preview hair, shoulders, hands, glasses, and objects entering the frame. Move naturally and look for holes, flicker, halos, or parts of the background remaining.
- Test the complete production scene: record or run a private/unlisted stream test using the same resolution, frame rate, encoder, overlays, and other sources planned for the live show. Watch for dropped frames, lag, or excessive system load; simplify the scene or change the processing route if needed.
Green screen or automatic removal?
A green screen makes chroma key possible, but it is an accessory choice rather than a prerequisite for every software option. XSplit explicitly distinguishes automatic removal without a green screen from chroma key for users who have one. A physical screen can be useful if you prefer a keying workflow; automatic processing is the alternative when you do not want that backdrop. The supplied product pages do not establish a controlled quality comparison, so judge the image in your own lighting and camera setup rather than assuming one method always looks better.

Common problems and fixes
- The production app does not show the processed camera: confirm the background app is running, its virtual camera is enabled where required, and the production app has selected that device. Recheck the vendor’s current integration guide.
- OBS plugin workflow does not work with VCam: VCam’s documented method requires its virtual camera to be enabled. Follow the current plugin instructions and verify both apps’ versions.
- Background removal looks rough around hair or moving hands: try a different mode or a chroma-key route if you have a green screen; adjust framing and lighting, then preview movement again. Exact controls vary by product.
- The stream becomes choppy after adding effects: test the entire scene at the intended resolution and frame rate. OBS notes that system capability depends on encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; reduce scene demands or use a compatible processing route if performance is poor.
- The background asset will not load: check the current app’s supported formats and file constraints. VCam’s cited guide lists JPEG/PNG/GIF and MP4/WEBM, but verify formats against the current app.
- The software or device is unavailable: recheck operating-system, GPU, driver, and app compatibility. In particular, NVIDIA Broadcast’s requirements are hardware- and driver-dependent and may change.
