The best fit depends on what “playing as the villain” means to you. Tyranny puts you to work inside a tyrant’s already-victorious regime; Dishonored 2 and Dishonored: Death of the Outsider let you play as an assassin and choose between stealth, restraint, and lethal force. The first makes service to an oppressive order part of the premise. The latter two make brutality a choice rather than a requirement.
Which game best matches the villain fantasy?
| Game | What makes it fit | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Tyranny | You serve the Overlord Kyros after the tyrant has won, making choices within an oppressive order. | Role-playing as an agent of a conquering regime, with consequential decisions. |
| Dishonored 2 | You play as Emily Kaldwin or Corvo Attano and can choose whether to sneak, spare enemies, or fight lethally. | Assassin action where the player determines how violent the approach is. |
| Dishonored: Death of the Outsider | Billie Lurk reunites with Daud for an assassination, with stealth and supernatural combat options. | A standalone assassin story with the option of lethal or stealth play. |
Tyranny: serve a regime that has already won
Tyranny is the clearest choice if you want villainy to be built into the role rather than added through your play style. You are a Fatebinder serving Kyros, the Overlord whose forces have conquered the land. Obsidian’s official description calls the Fatebinder “the judge and executioner of Kyros’ law,” while Paradox describes the player as an officer in the Overlord’s army. Obsidian’s official Tyranny page and Paradox’s game page establish that the story begins from a position of power: you are not trying to stop a tyrant from taking over.

The role is not simply to follow a fixed script. Your decisions affect people in the Tiers and the factions within the army, and Paradox says choices can change the world, allies, enemies, and even its layout. Combat is tactical real-time with pause. Choose Tyranny if you want role-playing and consequential decisions in an occupied land, rather than a conventional campaign about defeating a villain.
Dishonored 2: decide how ruthless to be
Dishonored 2 offers a different kind of villain play: its assassin protagonists can become frighteningly lethal, but the game also supports stealth and restraint. Bethesda says you can choose Emily Kaldwin or Corvo Attano, each with distinct powers, gadgets, and weapons. You can fight through the streets or sneak across rooftops, and choose which enemies to eliminate or spare. The official Dishonored 2 page describes those options.

This is a good pick if you want the freedom to turn an assassin into a brutal force—or complete the story with a less lethal approach. It is not a game that requires you to act as a villain. Bethesda lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam/PC; current editions and regional availability may vary, so check the relevant store before buying.
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider: a standalone assassin story
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider stars Billie Lurk, who reunites with Daud to pursue an assassination. Bethesda presents it as a standalone adventure: players can move through environments stealthily or use supernatural abilities, gadgets, and weapons to eliminate opposition. See the official Death of the Outsider page for the game’s description.

It suits readers looking for a focused route into the series’ assassin fantasy, especially if they want to choose their own balance of stealth and violence. Like Dishonored 2, it does not force an evil approach. Bethesda lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC; verify current platform and regional availability with the store you use.
How to choose
- Want villainy to be the premise? Start with Tyranny: you serve the Overlord’s victorious regime.
- Want to decide how violent your character becomes? Choose Dishonored 2 or Death of the Outsider, both of which support stealth and lethal approaches.
- Want consequential role-playing choices? Tyranny emphasizes decisions that affect the world and its factions.
- Want assassin action and supernatural abilities? The two Dishonored games center on that kind of play.
These games differ in an important way: Tyranny places you within an oppressive power structure, while the Dishonored titles let you choose whether to use violence. A criminal or morally ambiguous protagonist is not automatically a villain; consider whether you want to serve a conquering regime or simply have the option to take a lethal route.
