Screen size alone cannot confirm compatibility: check the monitor’s VESA hole spacing, its weight with the stand removed, and the mount’s desk attachment before choosing.
What to check before buying a VESA monitor mount
VESA hole spacing
Measure the distance between the centers of the mounting holes horizontally and vertically. Common patterns include 75 × 75 mm and 100 × 100 mm. Ergotron’s LX specification sheet lists both standards, but a mount’s fit must be checked against your specific monitor. If the display has no VESA holes, a model-specific adapter may be an option; confirm that the adapter is designed for your display and mount. Ergotron LX specifications; PCWorld’s monitor-arm guide.

Monitor weight, including the mount’s minimum
Use the display’s weight without its original stand, then compare it with the mount’s entire supported range. A mount rated up to a high maximum may still be unsuitable if your monitor is lighter than its minimum. Account for any model-specific limits tied to display depth or curvature.
Desk attachment and clearance
Measure the desk thickness and check the underside for rails, drawers, or other obstructions where a clamp would sit. A grommet attachment may work if the desk has a suitable hole. Check the desk maker’s guidance and the mount instructions, particularly for glass or other surfaces that may not tolerate clamping pressure. A clamp can also damage a desk surface if it is installed or tightened improperly. PCWorld’s monitor-arm guide.

Movement, screen count, and layout
Decide whether you need one arm, two screens side by side, or a stacked arrangement. Compare the mount’s lift, reach, pan, and rotation with your desk layout and desired screen position. Multi-monitor models can have different per-screen limits from single-arm models, so check the exact configuration rather than assuming the capacity carries over.
Mount options for different setups
| Setup | Example to investigate | Key specifications in cited documentation | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| One ordinary-weight monitor | Ergotron LX Desk Monitor Arm | 7–25 lb; VESA 75 × 75 mm and 100 × 100 mm; 13 inches of lift; up to 25 inches of extension; 360-degree pan and rotation; 10-year warranty. Figures are from an Ergotron sheet dated December 15, 2020. | Check the current SKU, your monitor’s weight and depth, and the included desk attachment. Ergotron describes screen size as approximate; weight and fit remain decisive. |
| One heavier monitor | Ergotron HX single-monitor arm | 20–42 lb; the 2022 Ergotron sheet states that monitor depth over 6 inches reduces capacity to 28 lb. | Check the display’s depth and curvature, and confirm the exact arm version. Do not apply the single-arm capacity to dual or stacked configurations. |
| Two or more monitors | A purpose-built dual or stacked arm | Capacity and movement vary by configuration; the cited materials do not establish a single shared capacity for all multi-arm versions. | Verify each screen’s individual weight limit, VESA pattern, orientation, reach, and the desk attachment for the exact model. |

How to choose the right mount
- Find the monitor’s mounting pattern. Check its manual or manufacturer specifications for VESA dimensions. If it has no mounting holes, look for a compatible adapter for that exact display.
- Get the right weight. Use the monitor’s weight without its factory stand. Confirm it falls between the arm’s minimum and maximum, and account for restrictions tied to depth or curvature.
- Check the desk. Measure the edge thickness, inspect the underside clearance, and confirm the clamp or grommet attachment is suitable for the desk material.
- Match the movement to your layout. For a single screen, check lift and extension; for multiple screens, verify the supported number and orientation and the limits for each display.
- Confirm the current model details. Compare the exact SKU’s specifications, warranty, attachment hardware, and installation instructions. Older product sheets are useful references, not a substitute for current model information.
Is the Ergotron LX a good choice?
The LX is a candidate for a single monitor that weighs within its documented 7–25 lb range and matches its VESA and desk-mount requirements. Its cited 2020 sheet lists 13 inches of lift, up to 25 inches of extension, 360-degree pan and rotation, and a 10-year warranty. Treat these as specifications from that dated sheet, not a guarantee that every current SKU or included attachment is identical. A screen’s diagonal measurement is only a rough guide: Ergotron says its listed screen size is approximate and may be exceeded if the display remains within the arm’s weight capacity.
When a heavy-screen or multi-monitor arm is a better fit
Heavy screens
The HX single-arm sheet lists 20–42 lb support, but its stated maximum falls to 28 lb for displays deeper than 6 inches. Curved screens can also require attention to arc depth. Check the current specifications for the exact model rather than relying on a simple diagonal-size match. Ergotron HX specifications.

Dual and stacked setups
Choose an arm built for the number and orientation of screens you intend to mount. Individual monitor limits, reach, and configuration can differ from a single-arm version. Confirm those details in the specific product documentation before purchase; a single-screen model’s capacity does not establish what a dual or stacked model can carry. Ergotron’s Mount Finder provides a route to model-specific options.

Common compatibility mistakes
- Buying by diagonal size alone: verify VESA pattern, weight, and depth as separate requirements.
- Checking only the maximum capacity: the monitor must also meet the mount’s minimum supported weight.
- Ignoring curved-screen depth: some arms reduce capacity for deeper displays, and arc depth may matter.
- Assuming every desk can take a clamp: thickness, underside clearance, and material affect whether the attachment is appropriate.
- Transferring a single-arm rating to a multi-arm mount: check the limits for the exact configuration and each display.
- Relying on an old specification sheet as current: confirm the current SKU and included mounting hardware before ordering.
