Color changes by elevation, region, weather, and year, so check the weekly tracker and road access close to your travel date.
Choose a route based on current color and the kind of day you want
Vermont Tourism says foliage typically begins at higher elevations and moves toward valleys. Late September into October is the broad expected peak period, not a date guarantee: timing varies with weather, elevation, and tree species. Check the weekly foliage tracker before choosing a destination. The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation’s September 30, 2026 report said, “Peak fall color is just around the corner for many parts of Vermont.” It reported the Northeast Kingdom at peak, with the Green Mountains and foothills approaching peak, and noted increased red foliage in parts of the Upper Connecticut River and White River valleys. That is a snapshot for that date; conditions will change.

Vermont Tourism reported in 2025 that 78% of the state is forested, but a large forest cover does not mean every route will peak at once. Let the latest regional report guide your choice, then build in stops so kids are not spending the entire outing in the car.

The Green Mountain Byway is a 71-mile loop through Waterbury, Stowe, and Morrisville, with Route 100 as its backbone. Vermont Tourism points to foliage walks near Smugglers’ Notch State Park and Mount Mansfield State Forest. It suits families who want a drive with town and food-stop options and the possibility of adding a short walk, rather than committing the day to a long hike. Check the specific trail and stop before setting out; the byway description does not establish that every option suits every age or mobility level.

Northeast Kingdom: follow the tracker north when color is strong
The Northeast Kingdom is a strong alternative when the weekly report says color is advancing there. The September 30, 2026 tracker reported the region at peak. Earlier reports recommended the Northeast Kingdom Byway on September 16 and highlighted Route 232 through Groton State Forest and areas around Maidstone and Brighton on September 23. Those recommendations describe the progression in 2026, not a guarantee for a later trip; check the tracker for your actual date.
US 302: a scenic corridor with several hike possibilities
On September 30, 2026, the state tracker recommended US 302 from Barre to the New Hampshire border and called the drive gorgeous. It also suggested hikes around Worcester, Belvidere, and Groton. Treat those as official suggestions for that date, then confirm current color and the access conditions for whichever walk you select.

Routes 15 and 12A: lower-commitment corridor ideas
The September 23, 2026 tracker described Route 15 from Jericho through Hyde Park and Route 12A from Northfield to Randolph as scenic while the Green Mountain slopes were beginning to fill with color. These can help shape a shorter or less loop-focused outing, but that dated description does not establish peak color on a later day.
Seasonal mountain roads: check conditions before committing
Some scenic roads involve closures or challenging surfaces. Vermont Tourism says Route 108 through Smugglers’ Notch typically closes from November through May; Hazen’s Notch Road closes from December to April and is not paved throughout; Lincoln Gap is narrow and twisty, paved on the Warren side and dirt on the Lincoln side. These roads may be striking drives, but check current access and consider whether the conditions fit your vehicle and family. Do not assume that a scenic-route listing means every road is open or suitable on your date.
Make the drive work for kids with a few intentional stops
Rather than trying to cover every attraction, choose one or two stops that match your children’s energy and interests. Vermont Tourism suggests connecting scenic drives with historic downtowns, farms, general stores, farm stands, covered bridges, trailheads, waterfalls, and museums. Its fall travel guidance also points to apple orchards, pumpkin picking, creemee or farm stands, and corn mazes. These are ideas to investigate, not guarantees that a business is open on a particular date.
- For a quick leg-stretch: look for a short trail, waterfall, covered bridge, or town green along the route.
- For a food-focused break: check current hours at a farm stand, orchard, general store, or creemee stand.
- For a longer outing: choose one museum, farm, or walk as the day’s main stop rather than stacking several destinations.
Accessible option in the Champlain Valley
Vermont Tourism describes Mount Independence’s Baldwin Trail as a wheelchair-friendly 1.6-mile trail with Lake Champlain views and historic features. Champlain Orchards is described as a family-owned orchard with roots extending back more than a century. Confirm trail conditions, access details, and the orchard’s current hours and offerings directly before traveling.

Check foliage, road access, and opening hours before departure
- Check the latest color report: consult the Vermont weekly foliage tracker for current regional conditions. Its weekly September and October updates are more useful than treating an earlier peak report as a forecast for your travel date.
- Check state road conditions: use Vermont Tourism’s road and trail conditions guidance and the Vermont 511 map for road closures and delays. Local roads may not appear there, so confirm a town road or destination with local sources.
- Confirm the stop directly: contact the attraction or recreation site to verify current access, hours, fees, reservations, and trail conditions before driving there.
- Bring a navigation backup: cell service can be spotty in some areas. Vermont Tourism recommends a paper map as a backup; its scenic-drives page offers a free map. A paper map is not a substitute for live closure information.
For route ideas and stop categories, see Vermont Tourism’s scenic drives guide, its fall activities guide, and its seasonal scenic-drive notes. Use those alongside current condition checks rather than as proof that a road, trail, or business is open on the day you visit.
