These mode labels and descriptions come from the games’ Steam listings. They describe different kinds of participation: online co-op and PvP are not the same as local co-op, and a playable vampire faction is not the same as a vampire protagonist.

Choose V Rising if building up a vampire character and stronghold is the point
V Rising is the clearest choice if you want to spend your time gathering, developing your character, and building a home base. Stunlock Studios describes it as a gothic open-world survival action RPG. You awaken as a vampire, hunt for blood, avoid sunlight, build a castle, and develop weapons and powers. The combination makes it a fit for players who want survival systems and action-RPG progression rather than a story-first campaign.

The game can be played solo or online with others. Steam lists single-player, online co-op, and PvP, so it has options for both private and shared play. If you want to play alone, online features do not rule it out; if you want structured competition, the listing also identifies PvP. Check the current Steam page for details of the available modes and compatibility before purchasing, since the broad labels alone do not explain every mode’s setup.
V Rising left Early Access and released on Steam on 8 May 2024. Its Steam listing gives a Windows minimum of 12 GB RAM and 19 GB storage, and cautions that requirements may change. Those are store-listed requirements, not a guarantee of performance on every PC. Check the live system-requirements section against your own hardware before buying. Choose Vampyr if you want a vampire protagonist and story-driven decisions
Vampyr is the narrative pick. Steam describes a single-player action RPG set in London in 1918. Its protagonist, doctor Jonathan Reid, has become a vampire and must weigh feeding against his work to save the city. The store description says the player’s actions can save or doom London, making the central tension a choice about what the character does, not a castle-building or multiplayer loop.
Pick it if you want to follow one protagonist through a story and are interested in the conflict between his identity as a doctor and his needs as a vampire. It is not the match for someone whose main priority is survival crafting, a shared online world, or a run-based arcade format. Steam lists Vampyr as single-player.

The Steam listing gives 4 June 2018 as its release date. Its listed minimum requirements are 8 GB RAM and 20 GB storage; the recommended requirements are 16 GB RAM and 20 GB storage. These are specifications published on the store page, not independent performance testing. Compare them with the live listing and your system before purchase.
Choose Vampire Survivors for short, escalating survival runs
Vampire Survivors is the pick for players who want a survival challenge with minimalistic gameplay rather than a conventional role-playing campaign. Steam describes it as a “time survival game with minimalistic gameplay and roguelite elements.” Runs focus on surviving increasingly difficult monster waves, gathering gold, and purchasing upgrades. The emphasis is on repeating a compact survival loop, not on inhabiting a richly developed vampire protagonist.
The title and theme can give a different impression from the actual format. The Steam description frames it as run-based survival with roguelite elements; do not choose it expecting the narrative action-RPG premise of Vampyr or the open-world crafting and castle-building of V Rising.

Steam lists single-player and local co-op for up to four players. It also lists controller, mouse, keyboard, and touch-screen support. Its full release date is 20 October 2022, and the listing names Windows and macOS support. For Windows, the listed minimum is 1 GB RAM and 2,500 MB storage. Confirm the live requirements and device support for your own setup, especially if you intend to use touch input or play on macOS. Steam also lists digital add-ons and a soundtrack; check the current store page for what is available and how it is sold.

Choose Total War: WARHAMMER if you want to command vampires rather than play a vampire action hero
Total War: WARHAMMER is a fantasy strategy game whose listed playable races include the Vampire Counts. Its structure combines a turn-based campaign with real-time battles. That makes it a suitable answer to “Is there a strategy game with vampires?” but a different answer to “Which game lets me play as a vampire?” The vampire role here is a faction within a larger strategy setting, not the premise of a vampire-only action RPG.
Choose it if you want to make campaign decisions and lead forces in battles. Avoid it if you are primarily looking for direct survival, character-focused narrative, or minimal-input runs: those are the other games’ strengths. Steam lists single-player, online, and LAN modes.
The original game released on 24 May 2016. Steam says buying it also grants access to Immortal Empires, subject to the ownership and launch conditions shown on the listing. Read those conditions on the live page before treating that access as part of your purchase. The store listing has system requirements for Windows, macOS, and Linux, but they include platform-specific qualifications and legacy requirements. Verify the requirements for your operating system on the current listing rather than assuming one platform’s specifications apply to another.
How the four games differ in practice
The most useful comparison is the activity that occupies play, not the shared vampire label. Each game asks for a different kind of attention and offers a different sense of control.

- Survival and development: V Rising combines hunting, avoiding sunlight, castle-building, and developing weapons and powers. Its premise keeps the player character directly tied to being a vampire.
- Narrative and choice: Vampyr puts the player in control of Jonathan Reid and frames feeding as a conflict with his work to save London. The store description ties the player’s actions to the fate of the city.
- Repeated survival runs: Vampire Survivors centers on staying alive against escalating waves, earning gold, and buying upgrades. Its minimalistic, roguelite format is distinct from a story-driven RPG.
- Campaign and battles: Total War: WARHAMMER moves between turn-based campaign play and real-time battles. Vampires are represented by a playable faction within the wider fantasy strategy game.
That difference helps narrow the choice even if all four sound appealing. A desire for a vampire setting is not enough to predict whether you will enjoy the moment-to-moment play. Decide first whether you want to build, follow a protagonist, repeat survival runs, or lead an army.
Solo, co-op, and competitive play
Multiplayer support is another point where the options are not interchangeable. Steam’s mode labels provide a useful first check, but they do not mean every title has the same kind of shared play.

Storage and memory figures alone do not establish how well a game will run. The listing is the relevant place to check current system requirements, while your device’s processor, graphics hardware, operating-system version, and available space also matter when assessing compatibility. Do not infer that a device can run a title solely because it meets one listed minimum figure.
Release dates, reviews, and price are not a quality ranking
The Steam pages list Vampire Survivors as fully released on 20 October 2022, V Rising as released on 8 May 2024 after leaving Early Access, Vampyr as released on 4 June 2018, and the original Total War: WARHAMMER as released on 24 May 2016. Release date can help distinguish a newer release from an older one, but it does not tell you which game fits your preferred genre.
Steam’s English-language review snapshots accessed in 2026 showed 90% positive from 55,116 English reviews for V Rising, 98% from 128,226 for Vampire Survivors, 76% from 9,221 for Vampyr, and 82% from 18,184 for Total War: WARHAMMER. These are volatile Steam user-review figures, not independent review scores or proof that one game is objectively best. Review totals and positive shares change, and the snapshots should not be treated as current without checking Steam.
