Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The most reliable starting point is Mouse Sensitivity 0.30 and Mouse Aiming Sensitivity 0.40 on PC, with Motion Blur disabled, Camera Shake reduced, and frame pacing prioritized over visual effects. On a controller, choose the scheme that leaves dodge, block/parry, weapon swap, and aim reachable without contorting your hand, then lower the separate aiming sensitivity until pistol corrections stop feeling twitchy. Tune Combat Assist independently: increase it when melee swings miss moving targets, and reduce it when the camera pulls your pistol line away from a deliberate weak-point shot.
A dependable starting profile
Valor Mortis is a first-person action soulslike from the creators of Ghostrunner. Its combat asks you to read attacks, parry or block on time, dodge out of danger, and place occasional pistol rounds where they matter. There is no universally best sensitivity: the useful distinction is between general camera movement and the separate aiming modifier. Start with a reproducible baseline, change one control at a time, and evaluate it in the same type of encounter.

| Control area | Recommended start | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse Sensitivity | 0.30 | Provides a measured general look speed for exploration and melee tracking. |
| Mouse Aiming Sensitivity | 0.40 | Gives a slower, finer reticle movement for pistol weak points. |
| Controller Aiming Sensitivity | Lower than your general look speed | Reduces overcorrection when you make small stick adjustments. |
| Combat Assist | Begin at the middle/default position, then tune by feel | Changes camera snap during basic melee attacks, not pistol accuracy. |
| Motion Blur | Off | Keeps parry flashes, enemy motion, and the reticle sharper. |
| Camera Shake | Reduced | Limits visual displacement during impacts and attacks. |
| Field of view | Widest setting that keeps distant targets readable | Improves peripheral awareness without making small enemies too tiny. |
The documented controls view showing 0.30 and 0.40 is a launch-era reference rather than a promise that every later patch will use identical labels. The game launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on October 13, 2026; Steam listed a first update on October 16. If your menu wording differs, select the equivalent general-look and aiming controls in the current build.
Mouse and keyboard: separate movement from precision
Set the two sensitivities independently
Open the game’s settings and locate the mouse controls. Set general Mouse Sensitivity to 0.30 and Mouse Aiming Sensitivity to 0.40, then enter an area with a stationary or predictable target. Turn until you can follow an enemy without repeatedly lifting the mouse. Next, aim at a small weak point and make several short corrections. If the reticle jumps past the target, reduce only the aiming value; do not slow general camera movement so much that turning during exploration becomes sluggish.

If you cannot complete a quick 180-degree turn without running out of desk space, raise general sensitivity in small increments while leaving aiming sensitivity unchanged. If turning is comfortable but the final correction before a pistol shot is difficult, lower aiming sensitivity by one small step. Large changes make it hard to tell whether your problem is speed, muscle memory, or target reading.
Build an accessible key layout
Full key rebinding lets you keep movement on the usual directional keys while moving high-priority defensive actions to nearby buttons. Put block/parry, dodge, and pistol or weapon access where you can press them without releasing movement. The exact key depends on your keyboard and hand size; the principle is that a defensive input should not require reaching across the board or lifting your movement finger.
- Test block/parry while strafing left and right.
- Test dodge while turning the camera.
- Test weapon or pistol access while retreating.
- Confirm that reload or interaction keys do not share an accidental press with dodge.
Do this testing before changing sensitivity. A missed parry caused by an awkward key is not an aiming problem, and raising sensitivity will not fix it.

Valor Mortis supports five fixed controller schemes. Because the schemes do not offer unlimited remapping, compare them in a safe area and select the one that keeps aim, dodge, block/parry, and weapon swap reachable with your preferred grip. Steam lists full controller support, including Xbox, DualShock, and DualSense devices.

A practical controller selection test
- Choose a scheme and walk, turn, and strafe for a minute.
- Hold aim while rotating the camera slowly, then make a fast turn.
- Press block/parry and dodge without removing your thumb from the movement stick.
- Swap to the pistol and back while moving.
- Repeat the sequence after a short fight. Pick the scheme that remains comfortable under pressure, not merely the one that feels familiar in the menu.
Controller Aiming Sensitivity is a separate control from general look speed. Start with aiming lower than general look speed. Raise it only if tracking a sidestepping enemy feels too slow; lower it if the reticle oscillates around a weak point. Stick-dead-zone options, if present in your build, should be adjusted only when you observe drift or a delayed response. Do not compensate for a drifting stick by making aiming sensitivity extremely low.
| Situation | Adjustment | Expected trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Reticle overshoots small targets | Lower aiming sensitivity | Finer corrections, slower target transitions |
| Enemy leaves your sight during a strafe | Raise aiming sensitivity slightly | Faster tracking, greater overshoot risk |
| Turning in exploration feels slow | Raise general look speed, not aiming first | Quicker camera movement while precision remains stable |
| Stick moves without input | Check dead zone or controller hardware | May add a small response delay if set too high |
How to tune sensitivity without guessing
Use a repeatable three-pass test. First, acquire a target from the center of the screen several times without firing. Second, track it while it moves across your view. Third, aim at a weak point, pause your reticle, and fire one round. Record whether you stopped short, overshot, or arrived cleanly. Change only one slider by a small amount and repeat all three passes.
Stop adjusting when you can perform the same motion consistently rather than when the number looks familiar from another game. Different field-of-view settings, mouse polling behavior, display size, and controller sticks change the feel of an identical numeric value. A sensitivity that is excellent for a large monitor may feel too fast on a smaller display because the same hand movement covers a different visual angle.

Combat Assist: tune melee snap, protect deliberate aim
Combat Assist controls how strongly the camera snaps toward an enemy during a basic melee attack. It is not a pistol auto-aim setting. Raising it can help when a close enemy repeatedly slips outside your sabre swing. Lowering it is preferable when the snap pulls your view away from the opponent you intentionally selected or disrupts a pistol line you established before firing.

| Combat Assist level | Useful when | Possible drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Higher | Basic melee attacks regularly whiff moving or sidestepping targets. | Camera may choose a nearby target or turn farther than intended. |
| Lower | You control target selection precisely or use the pistol from a prepared angle. | Manual camera correction is required for close melee hits. |
Try the setting in a crowded encounter rather than against a single stationary enemy. If a higher value saves missed melee swings without changing your target choice, keep it. If the camera repeatedly snaps to the wrong body or drags a weak point out of view, lower it one step. Because this is an editorial tuning recommendation, not a developer-prescribed value, your target-selection habits should decide the final position.
Clarity settings for parries and pistol weak points
Disable visual effects that hide timing
Turn Motion Blur off first. Blur can smear an enemy’s attack path and make a small weak point harder to identify. Reduce Camera Shake until impacts still feel readable but no longer move the reticle or obscure the enemy. Keep enemy audio prominent: an audible attack cue can remain useful when an effect, particle burst, or camera movement covers the weapon.
Set field of view around your display
Field of view is adjustable. Use the widest setting at which distant targets and their weak points remain readable on your screen. A very wide view gives more peripheral information but makes each enemy occupy fewer pixels; a narrow view enlarges targets while reducing awareness of attacks arriving from the side. Change field of view only after Motion Blur and Camera Shake are settled, because those effects can otherwise make you misdiagnose a visibility problem.

Separate readability from atmosphere
Keep decorative effects that do not interfere with sight if you value them, but prioritize a stable reticle and clear attack cues in difficult fights. If an effect causes a frame-time spike, shimmering, or a flash that masks a parry window, lower that effect before reducing texture quality that has no impact on timing.

Performance: stable frame pacing beats a high preset
Steam lists an SSD requirement, 16 GB of RAM for both minimum and recommended configurations, DirectX 12, and separate minimum and recommended CPU and GPU tiers. Install the game on an SSD and close background applications that compete for memory or cause periodic CPU spikes. A steady frame time makes mouse and stick input easier to judge than a higher peak frame rate accompanied by hitching.
TechRadar’s 2026 reviewer reported maintaining a comfortable 100-plus frames per second at 1440p after settings tweaks on that reviewer’s own PC. Treat this as one dated example, not a universal performance target. Your resolution, processor, graphics card, cooling, driver version, and patch can produce a different result.
A settings order that protects responsiveness
- Choose your display resolution and refresh rate.
- Disable Motion Blur and reduce Camera Shake.
- Use a medium or high preset, then watch for stutter during busy fights.
- Lower shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, or other costly options if frame pacing is uneven.
- Keep textures as high as your video memory allows without streaming pauses.
- Cap the frame rate at a value your system can hold consistently if uncapped output fluctuates.
- Retest a parry-heavy encounter after every major graphics change.
Do not chase a number shown by someone else’s PC. The useful target is a frame time that remains predictable while enemies, effects, and camera movement are all active.

Using the pistol effectively
The pistol appears early in progression, after the game introduces the sabre and before later supernatural abilities. Its ammunition is described as scarce, so treat it as a deliberate tool for weak points, staggers, and interrupts rather than a continuously fired primary weapon.

Prepare the shot
- Move to a position where the target is visible and you have a retreat route.
- Keep the reticle near the expected weak point while the enemy begins an attack or recovery.
- Wait for a clear opening instead of firing while the camera is still turning.
- Press aim, make the smallest correction needed, and fire one controlled round.
- Use the resulting stagger or interruption to create melee space, complete a parry sequence, or disengage.
Settling the reticle before aiming reduces the amount of correction required during the short firing window. If a shot misses, diagnose the cause: overshoot indicates excessive aiming sensitivity, a sideways camera pull suggests Combat Assist or an unintended melee input, and a late shot usually means you waited for a perfect opening that had already closed.
Conserve ammunition intelligently
- Spend a round when a weak-point hit changes the enemy’s posture or interrupts a dangerous move.
- Do not empty the magazine into a target that is already safely staggered.
- Preserve ammunition for enemies whose attack pattern is difficult to answer with a normal parry.
- When several enemies are present, use the pistol to create separation rather than to finish every target.
Mouse versus controller: which is easier for you?
| Factor | Mouse and keyboard | Controller |
|---|---|---|
| Fine pistol correction | Usually offers direct, granular hand movement. | Requires stick control and benefits from a lower aiming modifier. |
| Defensive input access | Full key rebinding can place parry and dodge beside movement. | Depends on which of the five fixed schemes fits your grip. |
| Large camera turns | Desk space and lift technique affect comfort. | Stick range gives consistent turns but may feel slower at low sensitivity. |
| Learning priority | Separate general and aiming sensitivities, then bind essentials. | Find a comfortable scheme before changing sensitivity. |
Neither device has a proven universal accuracy advantage for Valor Mortis. Choose the one that lets you keep movement, defense, and target selection available at the same time. A technically precise device is not useful if its layout causes missed parries or delayed weapon access.
Troubleshooting common aiming problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix to try first |
|---|---|---|
| You pass over weak points | Aiming sensitivity is too high or the reticle is not settled. | Lower aiming sensitivity one step and pause before firing. |
| You cannot follow a strafing target | Aiming sensitivity is too low. | Raise only the aiming value slightly; retain general look speed. |
| Melee camera snaps away from your pistol line | Combat Assist is applying a strong melee pull. | Lower Combat Assist and avoid attacking while lining up the shot. |
| Parry cues disappear in impacts | Motion Blur or Camera Shake is obscuring the view. | Disable Motion Blur and reduce Camera Shake; keep audio audible. |
| Input feels delayed during fights | Uneven frame pacing, background load, or a display mode issue. | Lower costly graphics effects, close background tasks, and retest on the SSD installation. |
| Controller aim drifts | Stick drift or an unsuitable dead-zone setting. | Check the controller and dead zone before making sensitivity extremely low. |
| Dodge or parry is missed while moving | The chosen key or controller scheme is awkward. | Rebind on keyboard or test another fixed controller scheme. |
Three ready-to-use profiles
Precision pistol profile
- Mouse 0.30; aiming 0.40, then lower in small steps if weak-point corrections overshoot.
- Motion Blur off; Camera Shake reduced.
- Combat Assist low or moderate if melee snap interferes with target selection.
- Widest readable field of view.
- Stable frame cap rather than an unstable uncapped rate.
Melee-first profile
- Keep general look speed comfortable for quick turns.
- Use a higher Combat Assist setting only if basic melee attacks regularly miss.
- Retain reduced shake and clear audio so parry timing remains visible and audible.
- Keep the pistol available for interrupts instead of relying on it for routine damage.
Controller comfort profile
- Test all five schemes and select the one that keeps dodge, block/parry, aim, and weapon swap reachable.
- Set controller aiming sensitivity below general look speed.
- Raise it gradually only when tracking is consistently late.
- Check for stick drift before making further changes.
Version notes and an in-game verification checklist
Valor Mortis launched on October 13, 2026, and Steam posted an update on October 16. Menu labels, defaults, and performance can change in later patches. Third-party control guides may reflect a particular build, so confirm the exact label and value in your current settings screen.
- Verify the current general-look and aiming controls.
- Confirm whether Motion Blur and Camera Shake retained your selected values after the update.
- Check that your controller is recognized and that the intended scheme is active.
- Run the three-pass sensitivity test in a low-risk encounter.
- Test Combat Assist in a crowded melee fight, then test a deliberate pistol line.
- Observe frame pacing during effects-heavy combat, not only in an empty corridor.
- Rebind or rearrange any input that forces you to release movement.
Once those checks pass, leave the settings alone for several encounters so muscle memory can develop. Change a single variable only when you can identify a specific failure, such as overshooting, slow tracking, camera snap, visual obstruction, or inconsistent frame delivery.
