There is no single best vacation camera for every trip. A pocketable zoom, a fixed-lens compact, a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses, and a video-first camera solve different problems. Choose by the kit you will actually carry and the pictures or footage you want to make—not by the camera body alone.
How to choose a vacation camera
Start with the trade-off between carrying less and having more options. A compact camera keeps the system simple; an interchangeable-lens camera can adapt to different subjects but grows larger when you add lenses. For each candidate, consider:

- Total carry size: Account for the lens and any essentials you expect to bring, not just the body.
- Framing flexibility: A zoom lets you change framing without moving; a fixed lens asks you to work within one angle of view.
- What you shoot: Still photography, self-recorded video, stabilized walk-around footage, and mounted action footage call for different designs.
- Ease of use and budget: A camera you can operate comfortably and afford is more useful on a trip than a more capable system left at home.
DPReview describes travel cameras broadly as small, versatile cameras capable of good image quality. Its 2026 travel-camera guide and RTINGS’ travel-camera guide, updated September 17, 2026 offer useful starting points, but their recommendations are categorized picks, not a universal ranking.

Compact cameras: zoom convenience or a fixed lens?
Choose a compact zoom for changing scenes
The Sony RX100 VII is a candidate when you want one small camera that can reframe without changing lenses. That flexibility is useful when a trip moves between landscapes, details, and distant subjects, and you do not want to pack a lens system. DPReview includes it in its travel-camera selection; RTINGS compares it with fixed-lens compact alternatives in its compact travel-camera guide.
Choose a fixed-lens compact for a simpler setup
The Fujifilm X100VI trades zoom flexibility for a fixed 35mm-equivalent f/2 lens. DPReview describes it as a 40MP APS-C camera with in-body stabilization rated up to 6EV, and notes that it can be difficult to buy; these are details from that guide, so verify current specifications and availability before purchase. If you prefer a small fixed-lens camera with a street-photography orientation, National Geographic includes the Ricoh GR IV in that category in its May 18, 2026 compact-camera guide.
Rank #2
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
These cameras are not interchangeable substitutes for a zoom: decide whether the simplicity of one fixed view outweighs the ability to change framing optically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

An interchangeable-lens camera makes sense when you want to adapt to different subjects, but the body is only part of the system. DPReview discusses the Fujifilm X-T50 paired with the 16–50mm f/2.8–4.8 kit lens as a travel-oriented combination in its 2026 travel guide. A kit lens can cover everyday scenes while keeping the lens choice straightforward; adding lenses expands options but increases what you carry.
Rank #3
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
That weight and balance change with lens choice. Digital Camera World notes that larger lenses can make the Sony α6700 front-heavy in its 2026 travel-camera coverage. Try to assess the complete camera-and-lens combination rather than assuming a small body means a small travel kit. Exact bundle, regional pricing, and the full weight of the X-T50 combination are not established in the cited guide.
Video: vlogging, gimbal footage, or action capture?
For talking to camera
RTINGS describes the Sony ZV-1 as a travel-vlogging camera, pointing to its articulated screen and detachable windscreen. Those features suit self-recording and help address framing and wind noise. RTINGS also notes that the ZV-1 II has a wider lens but lacks optical stabilization; if you are comparing the two, weigh the wider view against the stabilization trade-off rather than assuming the newer version is better for moving footage. See RTINGS’ compact travel-camera guide.

For stabilized walk-around clips
The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is built around a pocket gimbal design rather than the interchangeable-lens or compact-zoom format. DJI’s official handheld imaging devices page identifies it as a “1″ CMOS Pocket Gimbal Camera.” Consider this form when smooth handheld video is a priority; it is a different kind of tool from a stills-first camera.
For active or mounted shooting
GoPro’s official camera lineup includes HERO action cameras, 360 cameras, and mounting accessories, making it relevant for rugged activity and mounted capture. An action camera’s wide-angle perspective is not automatically the right look for ordinary portraits or travel stills, so choose it for the situations its format serves.

What the travel-camera guides actually establish
National Geographic says its photo engineering team tested 26 cameras over four months for its May 18, 2026 guide, weighing ease of use, size, shutter speed, and video features. That is the scope of that guide’s testing, not a universal camera ranking. Its compact-camera recommendations can help identify candidates, while your own priorities—especially pocketability, zoom, lens choice, and video use—determine which category makes sense.
For a broader shortlist, RTINGS’ guide last updated September 17, 2026 places the Fujifilm X-T5, Sony α6700, Fujifilm X-M5, and Canon R50 in different travel-camera categories. DPReview’s guide was published August 2 and updated August 21, 2026. Rankings and lineups change, and neither source’s category labels guarantee that a model is the best fit for every traveler.
Quick Recap
Make the final choice before you pack
- Decide the main job: everyday stills, distant subjects, self-recording, stabilized clips, or action footage.
- Pick the format: compact zoom for framing range in a simple package; fixed-lens compact for a minimal system; mirrorless for lens choice; video- or action-focused camera for specialized capture.
- Check the complete kit: Include the lens, batteries, and mounts or accessories you will actually bring. For mirrorless, consider both carry weight and balance.
- Confirm the current offer: Check local stock, included lens, regional bundle, and current price. Availability and camera lineups can change, and the X100VI was described as difficult to buy in DPReview’s guide.
- Choose the camera you will use: Favor a manageable setup over capabilities that add bulk but do not serve the trip.
