For an outdoor trip, the OM System OM-5 Mark II combines a weather-ready design with in-body stabilization; for high-resolution stills, consider Fujifilm’s X-T50 with its 16-50mm kit lens; and for a pocketable city camera, the fixed-lens Ricoh GR IV is a better fit. These five picks reflect different travel needs—not a universal ranking.
At a glance: five vacation cameras
| Camera and configuration | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OM System OM-5 Mark II | Handheld outdoor travel and changing weather | Basic video features and a small grip |
| Fujifilm X-T50 with 16-50mm lens | High-resolution stills with a versatile kit zoom | Tracking autofocus, viewfinder size, and battery life |
| Sony a6700 | Travelers who want strong autofocus for stills and video | Lens choice affects how compact and capable the kit is |
| Fujifilm X-M5 | A smaller mirrorless kit, especially when video is important | No electronic viewfinder or in-body stabilization |
| Ricoh GR IV | Pocketable city walks and street photography | Fixed lens; no zoom or lens changes |
These recommendations synthesize different editorial guides rather than reproduce one publication’s ranked test. DPReview’s 2026 travel guide covers the Sony a6700 and Fujifilm X-T50; National Geographic’s May 18, 2026 compact-camera guide includes the X-T50 and Ricoh GR IV; and TechRadar’s July 22, 2026 guide names the OM-5 Mark II its best overall and the GR IV its best travel compact. A category label is a useful starting point, not proof that a camera will suit every traveler.

How to choose a vacation camera
Start with what you will actually carry
A pocketable fixed-lens camera is easier to bring on a city walk than a body with spare lenses. An interchangeable-lens camera can cover more kinds of scenes, but the body is only part of the load: the lens or lenses determine much of the kit’s size and versatility. Compare complete kits, not just camera bodies.

For family members, children, or other moving subjects, autofocus matters as much as resolution. For landscapes or detailed stills, sensor resolution may be a priority. A higher megapixel count alone does not establish better low-light performance or better-looking photographs in everyday use.

Consider stabilization and weather realistically
In-body image stabilization can help when you are shooting handheld, while weather-resistant construction can be useful outdoors. Weather-ready does not mean waterproof: do not treat a weather-sealed camera as safe to submerge or expose without limit. Check the exact camera and lens guidance for the conditions you expect.
Decide how much video you need
“Shoots 4K” is not a complete description of video capability. Frame rate, cropping, autofocus behavior, and handling affect whether a camera fits your video plans. The OM-5 Mark II, for example, records 4K/30p, but its video features are described as basic.
1. OM System OM-5 Mark II: best for weather-ready outdoor travel
The OM-5 Mark II is a practical choice when outdoor handling, stabilization, and a relatively compact lens system matter more than maximum resolution. TechRadar names it its best travel camera overall, and Digital Camera World highlights its weatherproof body, strong stabilization, and compact lens options. Its listed specifications include a 20.4MP Micro Four Thirds sensor and 4K/30p video.

- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
Why it suits a trip
- In-body stabilization is useful for handheld shooting.
- The weather-ready body and compact lens range suit travelers who expect to be outdoors.
- The 20.4MP sensor is a different priority from the higher-resolution APS-C choices below; resolution should be weighed alongside system size and intended use.
What to weigh
- Its video features are basic compared with more video-focused options.
- The grip is small, which may be less comfortable for some hands or longer shooting sessions.
- Choose another option if your leading priorities are the highest resolution or the strongest low-light performance.

2. Fujifilm X-T50 with 16-50mm lens: best for high-resolution travel stills
The X-T50 pairs a 40MP APS-C sensor with in-body stabilization. DPReview describes the 16-50mm kit lens as a versatile travel option, and National Geographic includes the camera among its compact-camera picks. This combination is a strong candidate when detailed still photographs and a useful everyday zoom matter more than the smallest possible kit.
Why it suits a trip
- The 40MP sensor offers more resolution than the 20.4MP OM-5 Mark II and 26MP APS-C options in this guide.
- In-body stabilization supports handheld photography.
- The 16-50mm kit lens provides a flexible starting range without requiring several lenses for ordinary travel scenes.
What to weigh
- DPReview cautions that subject-tracking autofocus may struggle.
- The viewfinder is small.
- Battery life is a limitation, so plan around your shooting day rather than assuming one charge will cover every itinerary.

Rank #3
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
3. Sony a6700: best for a stills-and-video mix
The Sony a6700 is a versatile APS-C mirrorless candidate for travelers who photograph people and also want capable video capture. DPReview describes its 26MP sensor, strong autofocus for both stills and video, 4K recording, and a useful range of relatively compact lenses.
Why it suits a trip
- Strong autofocus can help with both still subjects and video recording.
- The interchangeable-lens system lets you choose a lens for the trip rather than being limited to one built-in focal range.
- It is a balanced option when a camera needs to handle varied photo and video subjects.
What to weigh
Lens selection changes the experience. DPReview cautions that the very small 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 lens does not make the most of the a6700 body. A lens with more capability may make the overall kit larger, so consider the image-making range you need against the size you are willing to carry.

4. Fujifilm X-M5: best for a smaller mirrorless kit
The X-M5 is smaller and less expensive than the X-T50, according to DPReview, and RTINGS added it as its compact mirrorless travel pick in its September 17, 2026 update. Its 26MP APS-C sensor can suit travelers who want an interchangeable-lens camera in a smaller body, particularly if video is part of the plan.

What portability costs
- The sensor is unstabilized: the camera does not provide in-body image stabilization.
- There is no electronic viewfinder, a drawback if you prefer composing through a viewfinder instead of the rear screen.
- For still photography, those omissions may matter more than the smaller body—especially for handheld shooting or bright conditions where screen composition is awkward.

The GR IV is the simplest choice here when you want a camera small enough to take along on a walk and primarily shoot street scenes. National Geographic names it its street-photography pick, describing its small, light, pocketable form as useful for city strolling. TechRadar also lists it as its best travel compact.

Know the fixed-lens compromise
The GR IV has a fixed lens, so it is not a substitute for a zoom camera or an interchangeable-lens system. It makes sense when carrying ease and the street-photography use case matter more than changing focal lengths or adapting one camera to many types of trip.

Which one should you take?
- Outdoor trips and handheld shooting: Start with the OM-5 Mark II if weather-ready construction and stabilization are priorities.
- Detailed travel stills with a kit zoom: Consider the X-T50 with the 16-50mm lens, while accounting for its tracking, viewfinder, and battery caveats.
- Photos and video of moving subjects: The a6700 is a strong candidate; choose its lens with the full kit’s size and capability in mind.
- A smaller mirrorless setup: The X-M5 saves space, but lacks both an electronic viewfinder and in-body stabilization.
- City wandering with minimal bulk: The GR IV prioritizes pocketability and street use over zoom or lens flexibility.
Rankings and availability can change. The cited guides describe their own selections and evaluation scopes; National Geographic says its photo engineering team tested 26 cameras over four months for its compact-camera guide, not for an industry-wide assessment. Confirm the exact model generation, included lens, and availability in your region before buying.
