A lamp only reveals one class of security feature; it cannot declare a note genuine by itself. Small tills can use a shielded 365 nm detector, while warehouses and cash offices usually benefit from a covered bench unit or a multi-feature machine that adds white-light, magnetic or infrared checks.
What a UV counterfeit detector actually checks
Banknotes and secure documents can contain inks, fibers or patches that react under ultraviolet light. A detector makes those features easier to see, allowing an operator to compare the note with the pattern expected for that currency, denomination and series. It is a fast screening step at a till or receiving desk, not a complete authenticity test.

The European Central Bank says counterfeit-detection devices may help retailers and other users of euro banknotes, but they cannot replace the user’s considered judgment based on the banknote’s security features. That principle applies more broadly: a bright glow does not prove that a note is counterfeit, and a familiar-looking glow does not prove that it is genuine.

- Use the lamp to look for the correct fluorescent response, not simply for any fluorescence.
- Compare against a known genuine note or the issuing authority’s current security-feature guidance when staff are trained.
- Use additional checks—such as feel, see-through features, microprinting, colour-shifting elements, magnetic features or infrared inspection—when the transaction or risk level justifies them.
Why 365 nm is the key buying specification
Bank of England guidance
The Bank of England states that a UV lamp emitting light at around 365 nanometres is ideal for checking the fluorescent features on its notes. It also advises against LED key-fob-style devices that often emit light above 365 nm. A product described only as “UV” therefore does not provide enough information; look for a specified wavelength near 365 nm.

Reserve Bank of Australia guidance
The Reserve Bank of Australia recommends a UV black light centred around 365 nm and says the check should be made in low ambient lighting. It warns that many 395–400 nm LEDs may be unsuitable for some features on Australian banknotes. Those longer-wave LEDs can make a fluorescent security mark harder to distinguish from background material.
What the wavelength number does not tell you
Wavelength is necessary but not sufficient. Ask how the lamp is mounted, whether the viewing area is shielded, how much of the note is illuminated, and whether the device is suitable for the currencies and document types you handle. A nominally correct wavelength in a poorly designed open lamp can be less useful at a bright checkout than a covered unit that controls stray light.
Match the equipment to your operation
| Use case | Recommended equipment type | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Small shop or till | 365 nm UV counterfeit detector or lamp | Wavelength, viewing area, shielding, mains or battery setup, and compatibility with the currencies accepted |
| Warehouse receiving or cash office | Larger covered UV unit or multi-feature detector | Throughput, inspection ergonomics, white-light, magnetic and infrared features, maintenance, and staff workflow |
| Mixed banknotes and secure documents | UV unit plus magnifier or multi-feature device | Document and currency coverage, expected fluorescence patterns, and whether the device has current test results |
| High-risk or high-volume operation | Tested authentication machine with multiple sensors | Current software or version, denomination coverage, false-acceptance performance, and service support |
Buying checklist for a 365 nm UV detector
1. Specify every currency and document first
List the currencies your tills accept, the denominations that circulate locally, and whether you will inspect passports, identity cards, permits or other secure documents. Banknote designs and security features change. A machine that handled an older series may not have documented coverage for a replacement series, so confirm the model’s current denomination and series support before purchase.
2. Verify the actual wavelength
Prefer a product that states a 365 nm-centred source. Treat “black light” without a wavelength as incomplete specification. Be especially cautious with compact 395–400 nm LED key-ring or pen-style products when your currency authority specifies 365 nm.
3. Control ambient light
Look for a hood, tunnel or other shielded viewing area that lets an operator see the note without glare. If the unit is open, plan where it will sit so overhead lighting does not wash out weak fluorescence. The Reserve Bank of Australia specifically recommends low ambient lighting for UV validation.

4. Check note size and handling
The viewing surface must accommodate the largest note you receive without folding or blocking security areas. A receiving desk that processes bundles needs more physical clearance than a till checking one note at a time. Consider whether the operator can insert and remove notes with one hand while managing a transaction or delivery.
5. Decide whether you need more than UV
A UV-only lamp is a simple first screen. A multi-feature machine may add white-light magnification, magnetic sensing or infrared inspection, reducing the number of separate handling steps. For high-risk or high-volume work, ask for documented test status, the supported denominations and the current software version rather than relying on a generic accuracy claim.

Confirm whether the detector uses mains power, batteries or both, and whether the cable reaches the intended bench. Keep the viewing window and lamp area clean; dust and fingerprints reduce contrast. Establish who replaces lamps or batteries and how the unit’s operating status is checked at the start of a shift.
How to inspect a note correctly
- Prepare the station. Dim or shield nearby lighting, switch on the detector and allow any lamp that needs warm-up time to reach normal output.
- Identify the note. Confirm the currency, denomination and apparent series. Do not compare a note with a pattern from a different issue.
- Inspect the whole note. Move it through the viewing area so all relevant UV features are visible. A partial view can miss an altered or substituted section.
- Compare the expected pattern. Check the location, colour and distribution of fluorescent elements against an official guide or a known genuine example. Do not treat a general paper glow as the result.
- Perform non-UV checks. Use the normal look, feel and tilt checks for that currency. If your machine has white-light, magnetic or infrared functions, use them according to its instructions.
- Separate uncertainty from a verdict. If a feature is missing, misplaced or unusually bright, retain the note in accordance with your currency authority’s rules and escalate it under your written procedure. Do not accuse a customer solely because the paper glows.
- Record the event when required. For business cash offices, note the date, operator, denomination and action taken so repeated incidents can be traced without marking or damaging the note.
How fluorescence should be interpreted
Brightness is not authenticity
Counterfeiters can copy or imitate visible and UV features. The Bank of England cautions that counterfeiters may copy UV features, while UK government identity-document guidance notes that poor counterfeits can fluoresce more brightly than genuine documents. Excessive brightness can therefore be a warning sign, but it is not a standalone rule.
Paper response and security features are different observations
Some ordinary paper, optical brighteners, adhesives or contamination may fluoresce. The useful question is whether the note shows the right combination of dark background and precisely placed fluorescent elements for its issue. Train operators to recognize positions and patterns, not just colour intensity.

Polymer notes need the same discipline
Polymer substrates can have different background behaviour from cotton-paper notes. Use the issuing authority’s instructions for the exact series. The Bank of England says detector pens should not be used for polymer notes; a UV inspection should be part of a broader check rather than replaced by a pen test.

Simple 365 nm lamp
A lamp is appropriate when the shop handles modest volume, staff can pause to inspect each note, and the accepted currencies are clearly defined. It has fewer controls and usually a lower purchase and maintenance burden. Its weaknesses are dependence on room lighting and the need for a trained operator to interpret what is seen.
Covered bench detector
A hooded or enclosed unit improves repeatability at a warehouse receiving desk or cash office. The operator places the note in a consistent viewing area, which reduces glare and repetitive repositioning. Check that the enclosure fits your largest note and that the opening supports the pace of your workflow.
Multi-feature authentication machine
These machines combine UV with other sensing methods and can be preferable when many notes arrive in a short period or when a single suspect note has a high financial consequence. Their value depends on current denomination and series coverage, maintained sensors, software updates and staff who understand alerts. A machine that produces a pass or fail message still needs an escalation process for unusual or damaged notes.
Using one kit for banknotes and secure documents
The same wavelength class can support document inspection. UK government identity-document validation guidance recommends a 365 nm source, sometimes called a black light, for checking UV features on identity documents. That does not mean every passport or card uses the same pattern. Before purchasing, list the document types and issuing countries, then obtain the expected fluorescence information for each one.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
A practical mixed-document kit pairs the UV source with a magnifier or a multi-feature device. The UV step can reveal fibres, printed elements or security patches; magnification helps inspect fine print and other visible details. Keep currency and document reference sheets separate so an operator does not apply a banknote pattern to a passport.
- Use a clean, flat surface so a document’s fluorescent areas are not hidden by folds.
- Compare the entire page or card, including areas that should remain dark.
- Check the document’s validity dates, photograph and machine-readable information separately; UV cannot validate those fields.
- Follow the issuing authority’s retention and reporting rules if a document appears altered.
Staff training and a written escalation procedure
Teach expected features, not device operation alone
Every operator should know which currencies and denominations the business accepts, what the genuine UV pattern looks like, and which additional checks are mandatory. RBI guidance calls for UV lamps or other detection machines and staff familiar with banknote security features. A short demonstration with genuine notes from each accepted series is more useful than showing only a counterfeit example.
Use a two-person check for uncertain high-value cases
When a note is disputed or the amount is significant, have a second trained employee repeat the inspection independently. This reduces the chance that glare, a damaged feature or an unfamiliar series is mistaken for a counterfeit signal.
Define what happens next
Your procedure should state who may retain a suspect note, where it is stored, what receipt or record is issued, and which authority or financial institution is contacted. Requirements differ by currency and jurisdiction. Staff should never return a note to circulation simply because the UV result is inconclusive.
Safescan 50 as a documented UV-only example
The Safescan 50 is a dedicated UV detector listed with a 9 W UV lamp. That specification identifies the lamp’s stated power, not an accuracy rate or a guarantee that every currency series is supported. Before deployment, verify that its wavelength, viewing area and current currency coverage match your operation, and combine it with the inspection workflow above.

For a small till, a unit in this class can provide a consistent place to check notes instead of relying on a handheld key-fob light. For a warehouse, compare its single-feature workflow with a covered or multi-feature machine if operators process bundles, mixed currencies or secure documents.
Common mistakes and fixes
Mistake: buying by the word “UV”
Fix: Require a stated wavelength centred around 365 nm. Reject a product description that gives only a colour or “black-light” label.
Mistake: using the detector under bright shop lighting
Fix: Move the unit away from direct overhead light or use a shielded viewing hood. Low ambient light is part of the recommended method, not an optional laboratory refinement.

Mistake: treating any glow as proof of a fake
Fix: Learn the expected location and intensity pattern for each accepted note. Confirm with additional security features before escalating.
Mistake: assuming old machine software covers new notes
Fix: Check current denomination and series support with the supplier and schedule periodic reviews when the issuing authority introduces a redesign.
Mistake: using detector pens on polymer notes
Fix: Follow the Bank of England’s warning and use the appropriate visual, tactile and UV checks for polymer currency instead.
Mistake: skipping maintenance
Fix: Keep the lens or window clean, inspect power leads, replace depleted batteries or lamps promptly, and document daily readiness checks for busy sites.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDecision guide: which setup fits?
- Choose a 365 nm lamp when one or two trained people inspect occasional notes and the accepted currency list is short.
- Choose a shielded bench unit when glare, repetitive handling or receiving volume makes an open lamp impractical.
- Add a magnifier when the same staff inspect passports or other secure documents and need visible fine-detail checks alongside UV.
- Choose a tested multi-feature machine when the operation handles high volumes, multiple currencies or high-risk transactions and can support software updates and service.
In every case, buy for the exact currencies and documents you handle, insist on a 365 nm-centred source, provide low-light viewing, and treat UV as one part of a trained authentication decision.
