For most home Docker servers, the best used choice is a 1-liter business mini PC with a 35W Intel T-series processor, an SSD and at least 16GB of RAM. The Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q/M720 Tiny, Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro and HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini are the strongest practical shortlist because they are common after corporate refreshes, support x86-64 Linux and can run multiple containers without the heat and noise of a desktop-class system.
Choose the exact unit by CPU suffix, memory, SSD condition, power adapter, cooling cleanliness and return policy—not by the chassis name alone. Representative measurements of similar systems show 11–14W at idle, but that figure changes with memory, storage, firmware settings, USB devices and workload.

A refurbished Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q or M720 Tiny is the easiest all-round recommendation when you can find one with a Core i5-8500T, 16GB of RAM and a healthy SSD. The Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro and HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini are equally sensible alternatives when their condition, warranty or price is better. All three are roughly 1-liter business systems designed around efficient desktop hardware rather than laptop parts.
| Model family | Documented Docker-relevant CPU | Processor class | Documented platform details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q/M720 Tiny | Core i5-8500T: 6 cores, 6 threads, 2.1GHz base, up to 3.5GHz boost | 35W Intel 8th/9th-generation platform | Two DDR4-2666 SODIMM slots, M.2 storage, 2.5-inch bay; 65W, 90W or 135W adapter options; 179 × 36.5 × 182.9mm (Lenovo datasheet and PSREF) |
| Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro | Core i5-8500T: 6 cores, 6 threads, up to 3.5GHz | 35W (Dell OptiPlex 7060 guide) | Storage, memory-slot and chassis dimensions depend on the exact configuration; confirm them in the listing |
| HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini | Core i5-8500T configuration documented | 35W (HP service guide) | Confirm storage layout, memory and included accessories for the individual machine |
Buy the Lenovo when you value clearly documented expansion and the smallest known dimensions. Buy whichever of the Dell or HP is cleaner, quieter and better supported by the seller when prices are close; a worn fan or tired SSD matters more than small differences between these platforms.

Why 35W business minis work well as Docker hosts
Docker containers share the host kernel, so they do not need a separate virtual machine for every service. A modern six-core processor can therefore handle several light web services, dashboards, download tools, databases or automation containers while drawing far less power than a tower PC. The 35W T-series parts in this shortlist are a useful thermal compromise: they provide six physical cores while limiting sustained heat that the tiny blower has to remove.
The systems are also built for corporate fleets. That usually means standard SODIMM memory, replaceable storage and readily available replacement parts. Refurbished supply is high because companies replace large numbers of identical desktops at once. This makes it easier to find a second unit later, but it also means listings can mix CPUs, storage devices, adapters and cosmetic grades under one model name.

Docker Engine on Ubuntu requires a supported 64-bit Ubuntu release. Docker’s documentation lists x86_64 (also called amd64), armhf, arm64, s390x and ppc64le/ppc64el architectures; the Intel systems here use x86_64. Install a supported Ubuntu version, enable firmware updates, and keep the host on a stable wired network before moving services onto it.
What the 35W label does—and does not—tell you
35W is the processor’s thermal design class, not a promise that the computer draws 35W from the wall. At idle, the complete machine can use much less; under sustained compilation, transcoding or indexing it can use more than idle. The adapter itself also has conversion losses. Treat the CPU rating as a cooling and noise guide, then measure the finished system at the outlet.
Model-by-model buying guidance
Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q or M720 Tiny
The M720 Tiny family has the clearest documented fit for a compact server. Lenovo specifies an Intel 8th/9th-generation 35W platform, two DDR4-2666 SODIMM slots, an M.2 socket, a 2.5-inch drive bay and 65W, 90W or 135W external adapters. The published chassis dimensions are 179 × 36.5 × 182.9mm, so it can sit beside a switch, behind a monitor or on a shelf without occupying desktop-tower space.
The Core i5-8500T option has six cores and six threads, a 2.1GHz base clock, boost up to 3.5GHz and Intel UHD 630 graphics. For a Docker host, the integrated GPU is useful for console output and basic hardware acceleration experiments without adding a discrete card, but no application-specific transcoding performance is established. Check whether the seller includes the correct Lenovo adapter and, if you plan to mount the unit, the mounting bracket.

Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro
Dell’s OptiPlex 7060 documentation lists the Core i5-8500T as a six-core, six-thread 35W processor with boost up to 3.5GHz. It is a strong alternative to the Lenovo when the listing provides better RAM, a newer SSD or a longer return period. Dell listings often combine several configurations, so read the exact CPU suffix rather than assuming every 7060 Micro has the same processor.
Confirm the included power brick, Ethernet port, Wi-Fi option and storage type. A unit sold without its adapter may appear inexpensive but become costly once the correct wattage brick is added. Ask the seller to confirm that the BIOS is accessible and not locked with a corporate password.
HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini
HP’s EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini service documentation includes a 35W Core i5-8500T configuration. It belongs to the same general generation and performance class as the Lenovo and Dell, making it a sensible choice when its physical condition is superior. For a server, prioritize a clean heatsink, quiet fan and healthy SSD over minor cosmetic marks.
Because refurbished HP listings can vary in memory and drive layout, request a photograph of the internal configuration or a screenshot from the operating system. Verify that the machine has two usable memory slots if you intend to reach 32GB later, and confirm whether the installed drive is M.2 or 2.5-inch SATA.

A measured-idle roundup reported 11–14W for representative Lenovo M720q Tiny, HP EliteDesk 705 G4 Mini and Dell OptiPlex 3050 Micro configurations. Those are secondary measurements, not guarantees for every M720, 7060 or EliteDesk 800. RAM capacity, SSD controller, BIOS power settings, USB peripherals, Wi-Fi state and background containers all affect wall draw.
No standardized, model-by-model dBA testing is established for this shortlist. “Quiet” is therefore a setup condition rather than a fixed specification. A 35W T-series CPU, SSD storage, unobstructed vents and a clean fan generally give the cooler an easier job than a high-power processor, spinning hard disk or dusty heatsink. A returned or refurbished unit can still have a worn fan bearing, so use the seller’s return period to test it.

How to estimate annual electricity use
Convert measured average watts into energy with this formula:
annual kWh = average watts × 8,760 ÷ 1,000
For example, a machine averaging 12W would use 105.12kWh over a year before accounting for interruptions. Multiply that number by your electricity tariff to estimate operating cost. Measure after all containers, USB devices and scheduled jobs are active; an idle-only reading can understate the real average.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Reducing fan noise without sacrificing reliability
- Use an SSD instead of a mechanical disk for the operating system and container data that need low latency.
- Blow dust from the intake and exhaust paths, while preventing the fan from spinning freely during cleaning.
- Leave clearance around the vents; do not wedge the mini PC into a sealed cabinet.
- Keep firmware and the operating system current so power-management fixes are available.
- Watch temperatures and fan behavior during your heaviest workload, not only at the login prompt.
How much RAM and storage to buy
Memory
Buy 16GB as the minimum for a general Docker host. It leaves room for the operating system, Docker’s page cache and several services without forcing constant swapping. Choose 32GB when you plan to run databases, search or indexing software, media services, build jobs or many containers simultaneously. The M720 Tiny supports up to two DDR4-2666 SODIMMs; verify the equivalent slot arrangement on Dell and HP listings before ordering an upgrade.
Two matched modules can improve memory bandwidth, but capacity and stability matter more than small synthetic differences for most home services. Check whether the seller’s advertised capacity is one module or two, because a single 16GB module may leave an empty slot for a later upgrade.
Storage
Require an SSD and ask whether it is M.2 or 2.5-inch SATA. M.2 is physically tidy and leaves the 2.5-inch bay available on systems that support both. A SATA SSD can still be perfectly adequate for containers; the important checks are health, remaining life and enough free space for images, logs and database growth.
Ask for the drive model and a health report when possible. Replace a drive showing warning attributes or very little remaining life rather than trusting it with irreplaceable data. Keep backups on another system; a mirrored container volume is not a substitute for a separate backup.

Used-purchase checklist
- Confirm the exact CPU suffix. Prefer the Core i5-8500T or a comparable 35W T-series processor. Do not accept a listing that names only the family and omits the suffix.
- Set a memory floor. Target 16GB, or 32GB for databases, indexing, media services or a large container count.
- Require an SSD. Confirm M.2 versus 2.5-inch SATA, capacity, model and health or remaining-life information.
- Check the power adapter. Make sure the correct Lenovo, Dell or HP brick is included and rated for the machine.
- Verify connectivity. Confirm a working Gigabit Ethernet port, the Wi-Fi option if needed, and any USB or display ports required by your setup.
- Ask about mounting hardware. A monitor bracket or under-desk mount may be absent even when the computer itself is complete.
- Check BIOS status. Request confirmation that no organization password blocks boot-order, virtualization or firmware settings.
- Get a return period or warranty. Fan condition, dust and SSD wear are difficult to judge from photographs.
- Inspect the listing photos. Look for blocked vents, bent connectors, missing rubber feet and damaged adapter cables.
- Plan a wall-power measurement. Published idle figures vary; your own meter is the authoritative number for your configuration.
Prepare the hardware before installing Docker
- Connect the mini PC to wired Ethernet, the included adapter and a display or temporary console.
- Enter firmware setup during boot and load stable defaults. Confirm the installed CPU, total memory, boot drive and system clock.
- Enable hardware virtualization only if you will run a virtual machine or a tool that requires it; ordinary containers do not need a separate virtual machine.
- Update firmware if the manufacturer provides a safe package for the exact model, then reboot and verify that the SSD and network interface still appear.
- Install Ubuntu 64-bit on the SSD. Use a fixed host name and a non-root administrator account so container management is auditable.
- Apply operating-system updates and configure automatic security updates according to your maintenance policy before exposing services.
Install and verify Docker Engine on Ubuntu
Docker’s supported Ubuntu procedure uses Docker’s apt repository rather than an unrelated third-party package source. Follow the current Docker Ubuntu instructions to add that repository and key, then install the Engine packages. The package set documented by Docker includes the Engine, command-line client, containerd, Buildx and Compose plugin.
- Update the Ubuntu package index with
sudo apt-get update. - Install the Docker Engine package set from the configured Docker apt repository:
sudo apt-get install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin. - Check that the service started:
sudo systemctl status docker. If it is not active, inspect the service journal before running containers. - Run Docker’s verification image:
sudo docker run hello-world. A successful run downloads the image, starts a container and prints Docker’s confirmation message. - For routine administration, add your user to the Docker group only after understanding that membership grants root-equivalent control of the host. Log out and back in before testing the unprefixed
dockercommand.
Keep the Engine packages and Ubuntu security updates on a maintenance schedule. Pin versions only when a documented compatibility requirement justifies the additional work; otherwise, delayed updates can leave the host exposed.
Network exposure and firewall behavior
Publishing a container port is not the same as allowing an application through Ubuntu’s normal firewall policy. Docker warns that exposed container ports can bypass ufw or firewalld rules. Put the host’s forwarding and filtering policy in the DOCKER-USER chain, which is evaluated before Docker’s own forwarding rules, and allow only the source networks and destination ports you actually need.
A safer exposure pattern
- Keep administration interfaces bound to the LAN or a private VPN rather than listening on every interface.
- Publish only the ports required by a service; do not expose database ports directly to the internet.
- Use the
DOCKER-USERchain for restrictions that must apply before Docker’s automatic rules. - Review port mappings after every Compose change and remove stale containers.
- Test from another device on the LAN and from an external network only when an external service is intentionally required.
Match the mini PC to your workload
| Workload pattern | Recommended starting point | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse proxy, DNS, home automation and monitoring | 35W six-core CPU, 16GB RAM, SSD | Network reliability, backup of configuration and low fan speed |
| Several databases, search or indexing services | 35W six-core CPU, 32GB RAM, SSD with verified health | Memory pressure, storage endurance and database backup time |
| Media services or frequent image builds | 35W six-core CPU, 32GB RAM and fast SSD | Sustained temperature, fan noise and storage capacity |
| Large build jobs or many concurrent services | Consider a higher-power host if sustained CPU load exceeds the mini PC’s cooling capacity | Wall draw and temperatures under a complete workload test |
The table is a planning guide, not a benchmark. Container images, application behavior and concurrency determine actual resource use. Start with conservative CPU and memory limits, then adjust after observing real utilization.
Common failure modes and fixes
The listing is quiet but the delivered unit is loud
Check whether the fan is clogged, whether a hard disk was installed instead of the advertised SSD, and whether the CPU suffix is a higher-power part. Clean the cooling path, verify temperatures and test under the return policy. If the fan bearing rattles or ramps constantly at low load, return the unit rather than accepting a replacement part of uncertain quality.
Docker works locally but a service is unreachable
Confirm that the container is running, the port mapping is correct and the service is listening on the expected interface inside the container. Then inspect host firewall rules and the DOCKER-USER chain. Remember that Docker’s published ports can bypass ufw or firewalld assumptions.

The host runs out of disk space
Check image layers, stopped containers, build cache and application logs. Set log rotation, remove unused images deliberately and keep database data on a volume with backup coverage. Replacing a small M.2 drive with a larger model is often simpler than moving a live database without a tested restore plan.
Performance drops during indexing or builds
Use system monitoring to distinguish CPU saturation, memory swapping, storage latency and thermal throttling. If memory is full, move from 16GB to 32GB where the platform supports it. If the processor remains saturated for long periods and the fan is at maximum, a larger 35W-capable system or a higher-power server may be more appropriate than aggressive fan-curve changes.
Maintenance routine for a 24/7 Docker mini PC
- Review host updates and reboot during a planned maintenance window.
- Check disk health and free space monthly, especially where databases or image builds run.
- Verify backups by restoring a small sample, not merely checking that a backup file exists.
- Record container images, Compose files, environment variables and secrets-management procedures outside the host.
- Measure wall power again after adding services; a system that idles at 12W can average much more when jobs run overnight.
- Keep vents clear and listen for a new bearing noise or repeated fan ramping.
- Document the BIOS password, adapter model and replacement-drive size so recovery does not depend on the original listing.
Bottom-line buying decision
Start with a used Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q/M720 Tiny, Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro or HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini configured with a Core i5-8500T-class 35W processor, 16GB or 32GB of RAM and a healthy SSD. Select the cleanest unit with a verified adapter, accessible BIOS, wired Ethernet and a meaningful return period. Expect representative idle consumption in the low-teens watt range, but measure your completed server and design firewall rules around Docker’s DOCKER-USER chain before exposing any container.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can these mini PCs run Docker continuously without a monitor attached?
Yes. After Ubuntu and Docker are configured, they can operate headlessly over SSH or another secured management method. Keep the initial display and keyboard available until firmware, networking and recovery access are verified.
Do I need a discrete graphics card for a Docker server?
No. The listed systems use integrated graphics and Docker itself does not require a discrete GPU. A GPU is only relevant to a specific application that documents GPU acceleration support.
Recommended Free Tools
Is 16GB enough for every home server?
No. It is a sensible starting point for light services, while databases, indexing, media workloads and many concurrent containers justify 32GB when the platform supports it.
Should I buy a mini PC with a hard disk to get more capacity?
Prefer an SSD for the host and container workloads. Add separate storage or replace the drive rather than accepting an unknown-condition mechanical disk as the foundation of a continuously running server.
