There is no single Tucson replacement that wins for every used-car budget. Start with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester and Kia Sportage, then compare the exact model year, trim, price, title, maintenance records and safety results. iSeeCars’ 2026 rankings put the Honda CR-V first under $25,000 and $30,000, while the Hyundai Tucson ranks first under $20,000. That price-band change is the key finding: the best alternative depends on what you can spend and which vehicle you actually find in sound condition.
Which used compact SUV should replace a Tucson?
Use the following shortlist as a starting point rather than a universal ranking. The evidence supports different choices for different budgets and priorities.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Buyer priority | First vehicles to investigate | Why they belong on the list |
|---|---|---|
| Under $20,000 | Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Toyota RAV4 | iSeeCars ranks the 2021 Tucson first in its under-$20,000 2026 tier; the RAV4 and Sportage are useful alternatives to compare by condition and local price. |
| Under $25,000 | Honda CR-V | iSeeCars ranks the 2021 CR-V first under $25,000 and gives the CR-V an 8.5/10 overall score in its 2026 overview. |
| Under $30,000 | Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 | iSeeCars lists the 2023 CR-V first under $30,000 and gives it an 8.0/10 reliability score; the 2025 CX-5 is next, also at 8.0/10. |
| Recent used-car safety recommendations | Sportage, RAV4, CX-5, CR-V | The 2024 IIHS/Consumer Reports list specifies starting years for these models, but its criteria do not make every example equally safe or reliable. |
| Winter traction or a familiar all-wheel-drive comparison | RAV4, Forester, CR-V, CX-5, Sportage | All appear in the practical comparison set; verify the actual drivetrain, tires and equipment on the listing rather than assuming every trim has the same capability. |
The Tucson itself should remain in your search when the budget is below $20,000. Replacing it automatically can mean paying more for a vehicle that is older, has more miles or has a less complete service history.
What the price-based rankings really show
iSeeCars says its 2026 used-small-SUV rankings analyze more than 12 million new and used vehicles and combine its vehicle studies with NHTSA safety ratings. It also says its safety score incorporates the latest IIHS Top Safety Pick information. Those are large-scale ranking inputs, not a mechanical inspection of any individual listing.

| iSeeCars 2026 result | Vehicle detail | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| First under $20,000 | 2021 Hyundai Tucson | Keep the Tucson in the search if your ceiling is around $20,000; an alternative is not automatically better at this price. |
| First under $25,000 | 2021 Honda CR-V | Use the CR-V as the first alternative to price-check, then compare mileage, drivetrain, accident history and maintenance. |
| First under $30,000 | 2023 Honda CR-V | Look for a 2023 CR-V when newer equipment and a later model year justify the higher budget. |
| CR-V overview score | 8.5/10 | This is iSeeCars’ overall score, not a promise that every CR-V will be trouble-free. |
Local asking prices can differ substantially from national ranking data. A dealer listing, private-party sale, mileage, accident record, region, trim and current supply all change the value of a specific vehicle. Treat the rankings as a way to decide which models deserve a test drive, not as an offer price or a guarantee.
Honda CR-V: the strongest all-around alternative in the evidence
Why it stands out
The CR-V has the clearest price-tier support in the available data. iSeeCars ranks the 2021 model first under $25,000, and its 2023 CR-V is first in the under-$30,000 reliability ranking. The 2023 vehicle has an average used price of $29,478 and a reliability score of 8.0/10 in that analysis. The CR-V’s 8.5/10 overall score is also the highest broad score cited for this comparison.
Who should choose it
- Shoppers whose budget is close to $25,000 or $30,000 and who want a heavily ranked mainstream choice.
- Buyers who can find a 2020-or-newer example with complete records and no unresolved title or recall issues.
- Drivers comparing several trims and drivetrains rather than assuming the base model represents every CR-V.
What still needs checking
The ranking does not reveal whether a particular CR-V was maintained, repaired after a collision or driven in severe conditions. The 2024 IIHS/Consumer Reports recommendation begins at 2020, but that is a program-specific starting point, not a universal “best year.” Check the exact year’s IIHS and NHTSA results, VIN history, open recalls and an independent inspection.

Why it belongs on the shortlist
The RAV4 is one of the compact SUVs named in the focused comparison set and appears in the 2024 IIHS/Consumer Reports used-vehicle recommendations from model year 2017 onward. That recommendation’s estimated average used price was $14,700, based on April 19, 2024 data, good condition, typical mileage and a private-party purchase. It was rounded to the nearest $100 and is historical context, not a current market quote.
How to shop it
Compare the RAV4 against a Tucson at the same price, mileage and drivetrain. Confirm whether the vehicle is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, inspect underbody and suspension components, and verify that the equipment you need is present on that trim. A 2017 example and a newer RAV4 can differ materially in driver-assistance hardware, infotainment and wear, so do not transfer a newer model’s safety result to an older one.
Mazda CX-5: the reliability-ranked alternative for a higher budget
The dated ranking evidence
In iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis of reliable used small SUVs under $30,000, the 2025 Mazda CX-5 is listed second, with an average used price of $28,683 and a reliability score of 8.0/10. The cited sample covers vehicles one to six years old in the relevant price band. That score is a ranking output, not a diagnosis of any individual CX-5.

Model years to investigate
The 2024 IIHS/Consumer Reports recommendations identify the CX-5 from 2021 through 2023. Their associated average used-price estimate was $17,600 under the same April 2024, good-condition, typical-mileage, private-party assumptions. If you are comparing a 2021–23 CX-5 with a Tucson, match engine, drivetrain and trim before drawing conclusions about value.

Safety qualification
The current IIHS small-SUV table marks 2026 CX-5 models as Top Safety Pick+. That award applies to the qualifying 2026 model and build configuration. It cannot be carried backward automatically to a 2021, 2022 or 2023 used vehicle; consult the rating for the exact year and build.
Subaru Forester: investigate it when traction and visibility matter
What the evidence supports
The Forester is part of the credible Tucson-alternative set, and the current IIHS class table marks 2026 Forester models as Top Safety Pick+. That is useful current-model information, but it is not a blanket certification for older used Foresters.
Questions for a used Forester
- Which model year and build received the crash-prevention and crashworthiness results you are relying on?
- Does the listing have the drivetrain, tires and ground-clearance equipment appropriate for your winter routes?
- Are service records complete, including scheduled fluid, brake and suspension work?
- Does a pre-purchase inspection find leaks, underbody corrosion or uneven tire wear?
The available sources do not establish a single Forester price, reliability score or fuel-economy advantage over the Tucson. Make the decision from the exact vehicle rather than from the current award alone.
Kia Sportage: a lower-price alternative worth comparing directly
Price context
The 2024 IIHS/Consumer Reports used-vehicle list starts the Sportage at model year 2020 and gives an estimated average used price of $14,400. That estimate used April 19, 2024 market data, assumed good condition and typical mileage, and represented a private-party purchase. It is not a current asking-price promise.
How it can make sense
A Sportage can be compelling when a well-documented example costs materially less than a comparable CR-V or RAV4. Compare the same fundamentals: mileage, accident and title history, drivetrain, tire condition, remaining warranty coverage where applicable, and open recalls. The recommendation’s 2020-or-newer starting point reflects that program’s criteria; it does not mean every 2020 vehicle is preferable to every older or newer competitor.

Historical used-price reference for the main alternatives
The following figures are the rounded estimates published with the May 22, 2024 IIHS/Consumer Reports recommendations. They were based on Kelley Blue Book estimates from April 19, 2024, assuming good condition, typical mileage and a private-party purchase.
| Model and starting year in the list | Estimated average used price | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Kia Sportage, 2020 or newer | $14,400 | Historical April 2024 estimate, not a present-day quote. |
| Toyota RAV4, 2017 or newer | $14,700 | Historical estimate; local prices vary by year, mileage and drivetrain. |
| Hyundai Tucson, 2020 or newer | $14,900 | Useful baseline for deciding whether an alternative is actually better value. |
| Mazda CX-5, 2021–23 | $17,600 | Historical estimate for the specified year range. |
| Honda CR-V, 2020 or newer | $18,700 | Historical estimate; do not confuse it with today’s listing prices. |
Safety: match the rating to the exact used vehicle
Crash-test and crash-prevention results vary by model year, equipment and sometimes build date. The current IIHS table is live and model-year specific: it displays Top Safety Pick+ designations for 2026 CX-5 and Forester models and separate ratings for the 2027 CR-V. Those results are not substitutes for the results of an older vehicle you are buying.
- Write down the vehicle’s model year, body style, drivetrain and trim from the VIN decode and listing.
- Look up that exact configuration in IIHS results.
- Check the same year in NHTSA’s safety and recall databases.
- Confirm that the vehicle has not been rebuilt, salvaged or modified in a way that changes the tested configuration.
Do not use a current award to claim that a 2017 RAV4, 2020 Sportage or 2021 CX-5 has the same performance. Safety databases are most useful when the year and build match exactly.
Reliability rankings are filters, not guarantees
iSeeCars’ 8.0/10 reliability scores for the 2023 CR-V and 2025 CX-5 help narrow a search, but they do not establish the condition of an individual vehicle. A neglected example can be a poor purchase even when its model ranks well; a carefully maintained example of a lower-ranked model can be the better buy.
- Request maintenance invoices, not just a seller’s verbal summary.
- Compare the VIN on the title, dashboard and service records.
- Check for accident, flood, rental or fleet history.
- Run the VIN through an official recall lookup and confirm that safety recalls were completed.
- Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection before committing money.
No ranking in this comparison includes a physical inspection of a specific listing, so the inspection and records review remain decisive.

1. Set a realistic price ceiling
Choose a maximum purchase price and reserve money for tax, registration, tires, brakes and immediate maintenance. If your ceiling is below $20,000, include the Tucson rather than excluding it on principle; the 2026 iSeeCars tier places it first there.

2. Build a matched shortlist
Pick two or three models and constrain them to similar year, mileage, drivetrain and equipment. A 2023 CR-V at $29,478 in a national ranking is not a fair comparison with a heavily used 2017 RAV4 simply because both are compact SUVs.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. Verify the listing before a test drive
- Obtain the VIN and a complete history report.
- Ask for service documentation and the title status.
- Check the vehicle’s exact IIHS and NHTSA records.
- Confirm the advertised trim, engine, transmission and all-wheel-drive system.
- Walk away if the seller will not permit an independent inspection.
4. Inspect and drive the actual vehicle
Look for mismatched paint, panel gaps, corrosion, fluid leaks, uneven tire wear, warning lights and signs of water intrusion. During the drive, test cold start, braking, steering, transmission behavior, climate control, cameras and driver-assistance alerts. A short drive cannot replace a lift inspection.
5. Compare total value, not the badge
Use the final inspection estimate, remaining maintenance, insurance quote and local parts or service costs to compare vehicles. The reviewed sources do not establish one winner for cargo space, fuel economy, ride, handling or ownership cost across every year and trim, so verify those attributes on the exact vehicles.
Common mistakes when replacing a Tucson
Assuming the highest-ranked model is always best
Rankings change by price ceiling: Tucson leads under $20,000, while CR-V leads under $25,000 and $30,000. A ranking is not a substitute for condition or local availability.
Applying a new safety award to an old car
A 2026 CX-5 or Forester Top Safety Pick+ result says nothing definitive about a 2021 vehicle. Check the exact model year and build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUsing historical prices as today’s budget
The $14,400–$18,700 figures in the IIHS/Consumer Reports list describe April 2024 estimates. Market prices in October 2026 may be higher or lower, and a dealer listing will not match a private-party estimate automatically.
Best Value
Ignoring the Tucson because an alternative sounds more prestigious
When a Tucson has fewer miles, a clean title and better records at the same price, it may be the safer purchase than an allegedly superior model with hidden damage or deferred maintenance.
How the 2022-model-year driving comparison can help
MotorTrend’s 2023 comparison evaluated seven 2022-model-year all-wheel-drive trims, including the Tucson and alternatives. That material can help you understand driving differences only when you identify the tested year, trim and drivetrain. It should not be used to claim that every used example has the same ride, handling, equipment or reliability, and it does not replace a condition inspection.
Bottom line: choose the best example, then the best model
For a used compact SUV other than a Tucson, begin with the Honda CR-V if your budget reaches the $25,000–$30,000 bands, add the Mazda CX-5 when a 2021–23 or newer example fits your needs, and compare the RAV4, Forester and Sportage whenever their price, equipment and condition are stronger. Keep the Tucson in the under-$20,000 search because iSeeCars ranks it first in that tier. Whichever badge you choose, the decisive steps are VIN-level recall and history checks, exact-year safety verification and an independent pre-purchase inspection.

Is the Honda CR-V better than a used Hyundai Tucson?
Not in every situation. iSeeCars ranks the 2021 CR-V first under $25,000 and the 2023 CR-V first under $30,000, but it ranks the 2021 Tucson first under $20,000. Compare the exact vehicles’ condition, records, mileage and price.
What are the recommended starting years in the 2024 IIHS/Consumer Reports list?
The list starts the Kia Sportage at 2020, Toyota RAV4 at 2017, Mazda CX-5 at 2021, and Honda CR-V at 2020. Those are criteria for that specific recommendation program, not universal best-year rules.
Can I rely on a 2026 Top Safety Pick+ award when buying an older used SUV?
No. IIHS ratings are model-year and build specific. Look up the exact year, trim and body configuration of the vehicle you are considering, then check NHTSA records as well.
