There is no single best used camera for everyone. Start with your budget, the subjects you shoot, whether you want a DSLR, mirrorless body, or compact, and which lens system you can afford to build. Then judge each listing by its condition and seller protections—not by the model name or shutter count alone.
Used camera picks by type and budget
The models below are selections from PetaPixel’s guide, updated January 5, 2026. They are starting points, not independent test results or guarantees of current value; local availability and condition vary. See PetaPixel’s used-camera guide.

Beginner camera kits to consider
For someone starting with an included lens, Swappa’s July 13, 2026 guide lists these kits. Its approximate price examples are publisher figures, not live quotes; Swappa says prices vary with condition, configuration, accessories, and timing. Check current listings before budgeting. Read Swappa’s beginner guide.

|---|---|
| Nikon D3500 with AF-P 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR | $150–$250 for the body; the guide’s figure does not establish the kit price |
| Canon EOS Rebel SL3 with EF-S 18–55mm f/4–5.6 IS STM | $250–$400 |
| Sony a6000 with E 16–50mm f/3.5–5.6 OSS | $175–$300 |

| Fujifilm X-T30 with XF 18–55mm f/2.8–4 OIS | $350–$550 |
The D3500 figure is specifically for the body, so do not assume it includes the listed lens at that price. For every listing, verify exactly what is included. These examples also do not establish current availability or a market-wide discount.

How to choose the right used camera
Set a total system budget
Compare the cost of a usable kit, not just the body. If a listing is body-only, factor in a compatible lens and basic setup items before calling it a bargain. Leave room for a new compatible memory card and an air blower; check the camera’s requirements before choosing a card type or capacity.
Choose a format for how you shoot
A DSLR can suit budget-conscious still photographers and people who prefer an optical viewfinder. Mirrorless may be a better fit if you prioritize newer video autofocus or a smaller system. Neither format is the best choice for every buyer.
Rank #2
- 28x optical zoom, 56x Dynamic Fine Zooms
- 20.2-MP CCD sensor for bright, sharp photos and HD videos
- Frame coverage: Approx. 99% horizontal and vertical (compared to actual picture)
- HD 720p videos with sound bring your memories to life
- Includes: LR6/L40 (AA-size) alkaline batteries (x4) , Lens Cap LC-CP25 (with cord), USB Cable UC-E16, Camera Strap
Check the lens mount and future lens costs
Identify the mount before purchasing, then price the lenses you expect to use. Existing lenses may make it cheaper to remain within a system. Some DSLR lenses can be adapted to mirrorless bodies, but performance depends on the specific lens, adapter, and camera pairing.
Match sensor size and carrying needs
Full frame can be useful for particular low-light or depth-of-field goals, but bodies and lenses may cost more and weigh more. APS-C is a practical starting point for many used-camera buyers. Consider the complete kit you will actually carry, not only the sensor specification.
Rank #3
- 16 effective megapixel, 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor
- 3-inch TFT color LCD with wide viewing angle
- DIGIC 4 image processor
- 720p HD video in stereo sound with a dedicated movie button

Price condition and seller protections together
Compare inspection findings and documented history against the asking price. A specialist used dealer’s grading, testing, or warranty may be worth paying extra for, but check the specific seller’s grading definitions, coverage, and return terms before purchase. For a remote private sale, use a payment method that offers buyer protection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Inspect the camera before you buy
Ask the seller for a fresh, original JPEG or RAW file and a clear description of the camera’s use. Ronalds Vilcins, author of ShutterCount.org’s inspection checklist, puts it this way: “The best used camera is rarely the one with the lowest number.” Shutter count is one clue, not a complete report of a camera’s health. A low count can coexist with damage, while a higher count alone does not prove a camera is unsound. Read Vilcins’s inspection checklist.
Rank #4
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
- Check available shutter information, but assess it alongside the camera’s condition and history.
- Inspect the sensor and test autofocus. Look for impact damage, signs of moisture or corrosion, and intermittent errors.
- Check the lens mount, card slots, ports, viewfinder, screen, controls, and battery compartment.
- Test stabilization if the camera or lens has it.
- Ask about repair history and compare the answer with any documents or visible evidence.
- Check the serial number and note inconsistent explanations or unanswered questions.
- For a lens, confirm mount compatibility and look for fungus, haze, or separation.
If you cannot inspect a camera in person, request clear photos and sample files, ask specific questions, and use buyer-protected payment. A seller’s warranty or return policy only helps if its actual terms cover the problem you encounter.
