A simple inline meter shows live voltage and current during charging; a diagnostic tester may also identify USB Power Delivery capabilities or read information stored in a cable’s E-marker. Those functions are not interchangeable, and a meter’s voltage, current, and power limits must cover the setup you want to test.
Choose a meter by the question you need answered
| What you want to check | What to look for | What the result can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Live charging behavior | Inline voltage and current readings, with a suitable electrical ceiling | What voltage and current are flowing in that charger-device setup at the time of measurement |
| Charger protocols or PD negotiation | A tester that explicitly detects supported protocols or displays USB PD negotiation | More about advertised charging modes or the negotiated mode, depending on the model’s functions |
| Cable capability identification | E-marker reading for compatible USB-C cables | Information declared in the cable’s marker, not independent proof of physical performance |
| Electrical cable faults | Separate continuity or resistance test capability | Only the particular fault checks the tester documents; E-marker reading alone is not a continuity or performance test |
Voltage and current readings describe the observed combination of charger, cable, and device. They do not, by themselves, identify which component is limiting charging or establish every capability of the setup. Protocol-aware diagnostics can add context, but only if the chosen model supports the specific test you need.

USB-C meters and testers to consider
Plugable VAMETER: straightforward live readings
The Plugable USB-C Voltage and Amperage Meter (VAMETER) is described by Plugable as a bidirectional inline meter that measures voltage and amperage, indicates current direction, and passes USB data. It is a fit for observing charging behavior in real time. Do not treat an inline reading as protocol analysis unless the product documentation expressly supports the diagnostic function you need.

The ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C is a candidate for diagnostic work that includes reading USB-C cable E-marker information and listing cable capabilities. The available manual is hosted on an Alibaba CDN, so verify current documentation for the exact model and revision before relying on detailed feature or range claims. An E-marker readout reports stored identification or capability data; it does not show that a cable physically meets those declarations.

PassMark USB Power Delivery Tester PRO: documented high-power limits
PassMark specifies a 58 V maximum sink input and a 240 W continuous maximum load (5 A at 48 V) for its USB Power Delivery Tester PRO. These are PassMark’s model specifications, not category standards or independent comparative test results. PassMark also documents charger and cable detection, including EPR and E-marked cable information.
Check the electrical limits before connecting a test setup
Compare the meter’s maximum voltage, current, and power with the system you intend to measure. If any ceiling is below the setup’s possible operating range, the meter cannot measure that system across its full range. Do not infer a safe or suitable range from the connector shape, a product name, or a feature such as PD detection; check the current manual or specifications for the exact unit.

- VERSATILE USB TESTING: Test voltage from 3 to 20V DC and current from 0.05 to 3A (USB-A) and current from 0.05 to 5A (USB-C), covering most common standard USB ports, including Qualcomm Quick Charge ports
- EXTENSIVE MONITORING: Continuously monitor voltage, current, capacity/charge delivered, energy, and resistance (calculated) for up to 1000 hours, providing comprehensive data insights
- CONVENIENT DATA STORAGE: Store and recall up to 10 readings, allowing easy access to previous measurements for comparison and analysis
- OVERLOAD DETECTION: Detect voltage and current overload, ensuring the safety and protection of your devices and power sources during testing
- HIGH-RESOLUTION LCD: The hi-resolution LCD provides clear visibility of measurements, even in environments with low ambient lighting, ensuring easy reading of data
For the PassMark PRO specifically, PassMark lists a 58 V maximum sink input and a continuous load limit of 240 W at 5 A and 48 V. That load figure is not a generic USB-C meter rating and should not be applied to other models.
Accuracy, resolution, and calibration are different
Display resolution is the smallest change shown on screen; accuracy or tolerance describes how close a reading is to the actual value under specified conditions. A display with extra decimal places is not automatically more accurate. Compare each model’s stated accuracy separately for voltage and current, and look for the conditions and calibration method in its documentation.

PassMark’s USB Power Delivery Tester Users Guide reports typical default voltage accuracy around 1% and current measurement of ±10 mA for its tester. Those figures apply to PassMark’s tool only, not the other meters in this guide. PassMark notes that calibration requires suitable external measurement equipment; the guide’s typical figures should not be mistaken for a calibration certificate or a guarantee for every unit and condition.
How to choose without paying for diagnostics you will not use
- For a basic charging check: choose an inline meter that displays voltage and current, covers the expected electrical range, and suits the way you need to connect your device. A protocol analyzer is unnecessary if you only need a live reading.
- For charger troubleshooting: look for explicit support for the relevant protocol or USB PD negotiation information. A current or power display alone will not tell you which charging mode was offered or accepted.
- For cable inventory: choose a model that explicitly reads E-marker information if identifying marked cables is the goal. Treat that result as the cable’s stored declaration, not a physical performance test.
- For cable fault-finding: check whether the tester separately offers continuity or resistance tests. Do not assume that E-marker support includes those checks.
- For higher-power systems: verify maximum voltage, current, and power in the exact model’s current specifications before use; compare all three, not just watts.
There is no established independent head-to-head test here that demonstrates one of these products is objectively best. The useful choice is the simplest meter whose documented limits and functions answer your particular question. Product specifications, model revisions, and availability can change; verify current manufacturer documentation before purchase or measurement.
