The best USB-C hub for a MacBook is the one that matches your Mac’s exact chip, supported external-display count, monitor resolution, and required ports. A hub with two HDMI sockets cannot make every MacBook run two independent displays. For a compact single-screen setup, a 4-in-1 or 5-in-1 adapter is usually the sensible choice; for two displays, Ethernet, card readers, and fast storage, start with a model whose host compatibility and video path are explicitly documented.

The eight models below are a research-based shortlist, not the result of a shared laboratory test. Manufacturer specifications are quoted where available, while models named in the Macworld roundup need a current specification check before purchase.

Why MacBook compatibility comes before port count

USB-C describes the connector shape, not one fixed capability. A port may carry USB data, charging, video, or several of those functions, with bandwidth depending on the MacBook generation and the hub’s controller. Apple-silicon and Intel MacBooks also differ in how many external displays they can drive. Macworld and Anker both emphasize checking the exact model before buying a hub for two screens. Anker’s compatibility guide explains why a hub’s two video connectors are not proof of two independent displays.

Find the exact MacBook model

  1. Open Apple menu > About This Mac and note the model name, year and chip.
  2. Open System Settings > General > About for the model identifier and memory details if the name is ambiguous.
  3. Record whether the Mac has two USB-C/Thunderbolt ports on one side or four across both sides; the physical port arrangement helps identify the generation but does not establish display support.
  4. Check Apple’s technical specifications for the maximum number of external displays for that exact chip. Do this before comparing hub prices or port counts.

Satechi gives a concrete limitation for its Type-C Pro Hub Adapter: dual display is not supported on Apple M1 Macs. That is a model-and-chip statement, not a universal rule for every M-series Mac.

The specifications that actually decide a purchase

Display path, resolution and refresh rate

Write down each monitor’s resolution and target refresh rate, then compare those requirements with the hub’s stated maximum. Belkin specifies dual 4K at 60Hz for its documented eight-port dual-display hub. Satechi specifies up to 4K at 60Hz from the HDMI port on the Type-C Pro Hub Adapter. A 4K claim without a refresh rate is incomplete for a 60Hz monitor, and a 60Hz hub does not guarantee 60Hz if the Mac, cable or display input is more limited.

Also determine whether you need extended desktops or a mirrored image. The Mac, hub and monitor combination must support the desired mode; simply seeing two video sockets does not establish that both screens will appear as separate desktops.

Port mix

Count the ports you will use simultaneously, not the total printed on the box. HDMI and DisplayPort are not interchangeable in every setup. USB-A is useful for older peripherals, while USB-C data ports may be needed for modern SSDs. SD and microSD readers matter to photographers, and Gigabit Ethernet can be more reliable than Wi-Fi at a desk. Audio, if present, may remove the need for a separate dongle.

Belkin’s lineup illustrates the trade-off: its range runs from a 4-in-1 travel adapter with one 4K display at 30Hz, through 5-in-1, 6-in-1 and 7-in-1 designs, to a universal eight-port dual-display hub. The company lists single 4K at 60Hz on the 5-in-1, card readers on the 5-in-1 and 7-in-1, Gigabit Ethernet on the 6-in-1, and audio on the 7-in-1. These are manufacturer specifications, not comparative test results. View Belkin’s hub lineup.

Charging and pass-through power

Pass-through wattage is the maximum power the hub accepts from a USB-C charger and routes toward the Mac after the hub uses some power. It is not automatically the wattage delivered to the laptop. Belkin lists up to 100W USB-C PD 3.0 pass-through on its eight-port dual-display hub; Satechi lists charging up to 87W on the Type-C Pro Hub Adapter. Use a charger rated above the MacBook’s requirement, allow for the hub’s own consumption, and treat the manufacturer’s figure as a model limit rather than a guarantee under every load.

The charging socket may be separate from the USB-C data socket. Check the labels and specification table before connecting a charger, especially when the Mac has only two ports and one must remain available for power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Data bandwidth

Look for per-port speed as well as the upstream connection. Belkin specifies up to 10Gbps data transfer, with USB-C 3.2 and USB-A 3.0 ports on its dual-display model. Satechi lists up to 40Gbps on the USB-C PD port for data-capable configurations, two USB-A ports up to 5Gbps, and a separate USB-C data port up to 5Gbps. A fast SSD connected through a 5Gbps downstream port will not reach the theoretical speed of a 40Gbps connection.

Size, cable and power brick

For a travel bag, a captive host cable avoids carrying another short cable and reduces the chance of losing it. Belkin’s eight-port model has a 22cm tethered host cable. Satechi’s Type-C Pro Hub Adapter measures 4.5 × 1.1 × 0.4 inches and weighs 1.4 ounces. A desk dock can provide more ports and less cable swapping, but it takes more space and may require an external power supply. Anker describes the general distinction: compact hubs favor portability, while docks favor a fuller permanent setup. Read Anker’s hub-versus-dock guidance.

Eight models to investigate

1. Belkin Connect 8-Port Dual Display USB-C Hub

This is the clearest documented choice in the list when you need two HDMI outputs plus desk essentials. Belkin specifies two HDMI 2.1 ports, dual 4K at 60Hz, USB-C 3.2 and USB-A 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet, up to 100W USB-C PD 3.0 pass-through, and up to 10Gbps data transfer. The 22cm tethered cable suits a laptop that sits close to the hub, while a stated display-privacy button can be useful in shared workspaces. Check Belkin’s specification page. Confirm your MacBook’s external-display limit and whether the selected monitors and cables can run 4K at 60Hz before ordering.

2. Satechi Type-C Pro Hub Adapter (ST-CMBPS / ST-CMBPM)

Satechi’s compact adapter is aimed at a MacBook that needs one external HDMI display and removable-storage ports without a desk dock. Its HDMI output is rated up to 4K at 60Hz; the adapter has two USB-A ports up to 5Gbps, a USB-C data port up to 5Gbps, SD and microSD readers, and a USB-C PD port with charging up to 87W. Satechi lists a 1.4-ounce weight and 4.5 × 1.1 × 0.4-inch dimensions. The important boundary is explicit: dual display is not supported on Apple M1 Macs. See Satechi’s current specifications.

3. CalDigit Thunderbolt 5 Element 5 Hub

Macworld includes this hub in its 2026 categories for buyers considering a Thunderbolt 5-centered setup. That makes it a candidate for a desk where high-speed connectivity is more important than the smallest travel footprint. The available material does not state its exact port layout, display ceiling, charging figure or dimensions, so verify those values on the current manufacturer page and match them to the MacBook’s Thunderbolt generation.

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display | 85W Max PD, 1 Powered USB-C 5Gbps & 2 Powered USB-A 3.0 5Gbps Data Ports, for MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Dell and More (Black)
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

4. Anker 555 8-in-1 USB-C Hub

This is Macworld’s broad eight-port candidate for readers who want one compact device to combine display output, USB accessories and other common connections. The supplied specification set does not establish its exact HDMI mode, card-reader standard, Ethernet speed or pass-through limit. Check those items, plus whether the advertised display mode is extended on your Mac, before treating it as a dual-monitor solution.

5. Satechi OntheGo 7-in-1 Multiport Adapter

Macworld lists the OntheGo model as a travel-oriented seven-in-one option. It is worth considering when the priority is a portable collection of everyday ports rather than a permanently powered desk station. Current resolution, refresh-rate, power and weight figures are not established in the available material; use Satechi’s live specification table to confirm each one for the exact revision.

6. EZQuest USB 4 Dual Display 8-in-1 Hub (Pro Series)

The name identifies its intended USB4 and dual-display role, and Macworld includes it among the comparison categories. Before purchase, verify the host Mac’s supported display count, the hub’s required cables, whether both outputs can be extended independently, and its charging and data limits. USB4 branding alone does not override the Mac’s own display ceiling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Plugable USB-C Quad 4K HDMI Adapter

This adapter is aimed at readers investigating several HDMI displays. Macworld names it in the 2026 roundup, but the available evidence does not establish that a particular MacBook can drive four independent screens through it. Confirm the adapter’s operating method, macOS support, maximum simultaneous displays, resolution/refresh combinations and power requirements from the current product documentation.

8. Plugable 10-in-1 USB-C Hub

The ten-in-one model is the high-port-count candidate in Macworld’s list. It may suit a desk that otherwise needs several adapters, but the practical value depends on which ten ports are present on the current revision and how bandwidth is shared. Verify the full port map, display mode, upstream speed, pass-through rating and card-reader standard before selecting it over a smaller hub.

A decision process that avoids expensive mismatches

  1. Define the display goal. Write “one external display,” “two extended displays,” or “mirror plus laptop screen.” Include each monitor’s resolution and refresh rate.
  2. Confirm the MacBook ceiling. Use Apple’s specifications for the exact chip and year. If the Mac cannot support the number of independent displays, a hub with more outputs will not change that limit.
  3. Choose the video path. Prefer a hub whose native USB-C/Thunderbolt video behavior is documented for your Mac. Treat software-dependent or model-specific approaches as a separate compatibility decision, not as an automatic feature of every USB-C hub.
  4. Make a simultaneous port list. For example: two HDMI, Ethernet, one USB-A keyboard, one USB-C SSD, SD card and charging. Select a hub that has those connections without relying on an unlisted adapter.
  5. Check power math. Compare the MacBook’s charger requirement with the hub’s pass-through rating and leave headroom for the hub and attached devices.
  6. Match bandwidth to the busiest device. A fast drive, two high-resolution displays and several USB peripherals can share the hub’s upstream link. Read the per-port and upstream figures instead of choosing by the largest number on the package.
  7. Validate the physical setup. Measure the host-cable reach, check whether ports are on the side you can access, and decide whether you can accommodate a power brick on the desk.
  8. Recheck the live listing. Retail price, stock and product revisions change. Confirm the exact model number and current manufacturer specification immediately before buying.

Setting up two monitors

  1. Shut down or log out if the hub or monitor instructions require it, then connect the hub to the MacBook’s compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt port.
  2. Connect the charger to the hub’s labeled PD input, not to a data-only USB-C socket.
  3. Attach each monitor with the correct HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C cable for the hub’s outputs.
  4. Open System Settings > Displays. Arrange the screens by dragging their thumbnails and choose whether to extend or mirror.
  5. Open each display’s settings and select the intended resolution and refresh rate. If 4K falls back to 30Hz, check the hub specification, cable rating, monitor input and Mac support before assuming the hub is defective.
  6. If only one screen appears, disconnect other USB devices, reconnect power, try the other Mac port, and test each monitor alone. This isolates a host-display limit from a cable, monitor or hub fault.

Common failure modes and fixes

  • Two HDMI ports but one desktop: The MacBook may support only one external display through that path, or the hub may mirror rather than extend. Check the Mac’s model-specific display limit and the hub’s operating requirements.
  • Monitor works at 30Hz instead of 60Hz: Confirm that the hub, cable, monitor input and Mac all support the desired 4K/60Hz combination. Belkin and Satechi publish 4K/60Hz figures for the specific models described above; those figures do not transfer to every hub.
  • Battery still drains while “charging”: Pass-through is a maximum input rating. The hub and attached devices consume part of it, so use a higher-rated charger when appropriate and check the Mac’s actual power status.
  • SSD performance is disappointing: Check whether the drive is connected to a 5Gbps downstream port, whether other devices share the upstream link, and whether the hub’s stated speed is theoretical maximum rather than a sustained test result.
  • SD card or Ethernet is missing: Recheck the current model’s port map; similarly named revisions can differ. Install no software unless the manufacturer explicitly requires it for that model and macOS version.
  • Intermittent disconnects: Power the hub, disconnect high-draw peripherals, reseat the host cable and update macOS. A short, direct cable path and adequate charger headroom often improve stability.

Travel hub or desk dock?

Choose a compact adapter when you carry the MacBook daily, normally attach one display, and can live with unplugging peripherals. The Satechi Type-C Pro Hub Adapter demonstrates this design priority with its 1.4-ounce, 4.5-inch body. Choose a larger, powered hub when Ethernet, card readers, several USB devices and multiple displays remain connected for hours. Belkin’s eight-port model illustrates the desk-oriented approach with dual HDMI, Ethernet and higher port count, but its physical cable and power arrangement should be checked against your workspace.

There is no universal “best” hub independent of the MacBook. The reliable choice is the smallest model that satisfies the host’s display limit, your required resolution and refresh rate, your simultaneous port list, and your charging needs.
