AMD Radeon and Intel Arc players have two official alternatives to NVIDIA DLSS in the PC version of Hogwarts Legacy: AMD FSR and Intel XeSS. The game’s PC Features FAQ lists all three technologies, while also warning that an option may not be available on every device. On an AMD card, start with FSR; on an Intel Arc card, test XeSS as well as FSR. Keep the same resolution, graphics preset and scene when comparing them, because there is no independent evidence that one is universally faster or sharper on every GPU.
DLSS 5 also needs a careful definition. NVIDIA describes it as a real-time neural-rendering model that uses frame color and motion vectors to add lighting and materials. That is a broader role than conventional resolution upscaling. FSR and XeSS in Hogwarts Legacy should therefore be treated as resolution-reconstruction choices, not as identical replacements for every part of DLSS 5.

What you can use instead of DLSS in Hogwarts Legacy
The supported choices depend on the game build, graphics driver and GPU. Portkey Games’ PC Features FAQ identifies:
- AMD FSR for compatible AMD Radeon hardware and other GPUs that expose the option.
- Intel XeSS for compatible Intel graphics and other supported devices.
- NVIDIA DLSS for supported GeForce hardware.
The same FAQ explains that upscaling creates a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution input and that a listed technology may not be available on every device. Seeing FSR or XeSS in documentation is not a guarantee that a particular card, driver or game patch will display the setting.

For an AMD or Intel player, the practical answer is to use whichever of FSR and XeSS appears in the current PC settings, then compare it at the resolution and quality level you actually play. If neither option is exposed or the reconstruction artifacts are unacceptable, render at native resolution and reduce another graphics setting instead.
DLSS 5 is not simply another FSR or XeSS preset
NVIDIA’s announcement characterizes DLSS 5 as “a real-time neural rendering model” that uses frame color and motion vectors to infuse scenes with lighting and materials. Jensen Huang described it as “the GPT moment for graphics — blending hand-crafted rendering with generative AI to deliver a dramatic leap in visual realism while preserving the control artists need for creative expression.” That is a vendor description of the technology’s intended role, not an independent comparison with FSR or XeSS in Hogwarts Legacy.
Traditional upscaling asks a reconstruction algorithm to produce a higher-resolution frame from a lower-resolution render, using information such as previous frames, motion and edges. DLSS 5’s stated neural-rendering scope includes additional appearance synthesis. FSR and XeSS should therefore be compared on the questions that matter in this game—rendering resolution, detail retention, temporal stability, latency and frame rate—without assuming that either one reproduces every DLSS 5 feature.
FSR versus XeSS: a useful comparison
Neither the game FAQ nor the other current sources establish a controlled, like-for-like winner. The table below describes the decision rather than assigning an unsupported quality ranking.
| Option | Best first test | What to inspect | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMD FSR | AMD Radeon systems, or any system where FSR is the only visible option | Fine geometry, hair, foliage, moving stair rails, ghosting and sharpening | The game’s implementation and the driver’s behavior are separate from newer AMD driver-upgrade features. |
| Intel XeSS | Intel Arc systems when XeSS is available in the menu | Temporal stability in motion, thin lines, distant architecture and shimmering | Availability still depends on the current game build and device; the FAQ does not promise the option on every GPU. |
| Native resolution | When both reconstructions show distracting artifacts or performance is already adequate | Native detail and consistency, balanced against a lower frame rate | This is a baseline, not an upscaler. Lowering other settings may recover performance. |
Use the same output resolution, rendering preset, ray-tracing state, field of view and scene for each test. Changing several variables at once makes it impossible to tell whether an improvement came from the upscaler or from another setting.
How to choose the mode and sharpness setting
Hogwarts Legacy separates the upscaler choice from two controls that are easy to confuse:

- Upscale Mode determines the internal rendering resolution. Quality modes render at a higher internal resolution and preserve more detail; Performance modes use a lower internal resolution to prioritize frame rate, with a corresponding image-quality cost.
- Upscale Sharpness applies sharpening after reconstruction. It does not restore the detail lost by selecting a more aggressive Performance mode.
Start with Quality when the game is close to your desired frame rate. Move to Performance only when the additional frames are worth the softer image or when a demanding scene causes unacceptable dips. Adjust sharpness in small increments: excessive sharpening can turn edges into bright halos and make foliage shimmer, while too little can look blurry. Record the mode and sharpness value with each test so you can reproduce the result after a driver or game update.

Step-by-step: testing FSR and XeSS on the same PC
- Update before comparing. Install the current graphics driver for your Radeon or Arc card and launch the current game build. Patches can alter which options are exposed.
- Set a fixed target. Choose the resolution used by your display and leave the graphics preset, ray tracing, field of view and other image-quality settings unchanged.
- Find the upscaling controls. In the PC graphics or display settings, locate the technology selector, Upscale Mode and Upscale Sharpness. The exact menu grouping can change between builds.
- Establish a native baseline. If performance permits, run a repeatable route at native resolution and note frame rate, frame-time consistency and visible detail. This gives you a reference for reconstruction artifacts.
- Test FSR. Select FSR, use the same mode and sharpness you will use for the other option, and repeat the same route. Check a still scene and the same scene while moving the camera.
- Test XeSS. Select XeSS if the game exposes it on your system. Keep every other variable fixed and repeat the route. If the option is missing, treat that as a compatibility result rather than forcing a driver setting that the game does not document.
- Write down observations. Note average frame rate if you measure it, but also look at frame-time spikes, input responsiveness, ghost trails behind moving characters, crawling foliage, unstable fine lines and over-sharpened edges.
- Choose the least aggressive mode that meets your target. A stable Quality-mode image is often preferable to a faster Performance-mode image with distracting temporal artifacts. Your own scenes and tolerance decide the result.
Where to look for image-quality differences
Upscalers can look similar in a static screenshot and diverge during movement. Compare the same camera pans and traversal sections rather than judging a paused frame alone.
Fine geometry and distant detail
Inspect railings, window mullions, book spines, roof tiles and distant castle structures. A reconstruction that preserves a thin line when the camera is still may cause it to flicker when the camera moves. Excessive sharpening can make those lines appear artificially bright.
Foliage, hair and particles
Trees, grass, hair strands, smoke and spell particles are difficult because they change shape from frame to frame. Watch for crawling patterns, missing strands and trails behind moving effects. Compare at the same camera speed; a faster pan can make any temporal method look worse.
Motion stability
Walk the same route with each option. Look at character silhouettes, stair railings and banners while turning. Ghosting appears as a soft duplicate or smear behind movement; instability appears as flicker or detail that repeatedly resolves and disappears.

Dark corridors and bright spell effects reveal halos and ringing. If increasing Upscale Sharpness makes outlines glow or causes foliage to sparkle, lower sharpness before abandoning the upscaler.
Frame rate, responsiveness and frame generation
Upscaling reduces the internal rendering workload, but the result is not determined by the upscaler name alone. The PC FAQ notes that settings can affect GPU performance, CPU performance and VRAM use. A scene limited by the CPU, streaming or memory may gain little from a lower internal resolution. Conversely, a GPU-limited scene may benefit substantially.

Measure the same route and pay attention to frame-time consistency, not only an average number. A higher average with large stutters can feel worse than a slightly lower but steadier result. Keep the display’s refresh rate and any frame cap unchanged while comparing.
The FAQ lists NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation separately from the upscaling technologies. It does not establish that FSR or XeSS in Hogwarts Legacy provides the same frame-generation feature. Do not treat a frame-generation toggle, if present on your system, as proof that the underlying FSR or XeSS reconstruction is equivalent to DLSS 5.

AMD’s current supported-games database lists Hogwarts Legacy among games supporting at least one FSR Redstone technology. The compatibility notes attach minimum integrated FSR versions and a driver-upgrade path for marked titles. That wording matters: it does not prove that every Redstone feature is native to the game, active on every driver, or available on every Radeon card.
Check the current AMD game entry and its qualification notes before describing a particular driver override as available. A driver-level feature can have different requirements from the FSR option built into the game, and a game update can change the interaction between them.
AMD separately states that its ML-based FSR Upscaling is available on Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series, with RX 6000 support listed for 2027. This statement concerns the ML-based FSR Upscaling feature; it should not be read as a claim that older FSR versions are limited to those series. A Radeon RX 6000 owner can still encounter an in-game FSR option even though the newer ML feature has a different support schedule.
Intel Arc-specific compatibility notes
Intel Arc owners should first verify that XeSS is visible in the game’s current settings. The official FAQ lists XeSS as a supported technology, but also says availability may vary by device. If XeSS is present, compare it directly with FSR at identical settings instead of assuming the vendor-matched option must be best.

Keep the Arc driver current and retest after a major game patch. If XeSS disappears, produces a severe artifact or behaves differently after an update, record the game version and driver version before troubleshooting. Avoid changing several graphics options at once; otherwise you cannot identify whether the issue is the upscaler, a preset change or a driver regression.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Hardware context and what the published requirements do—and do not—tell you
Steam’s support listing gives example recommended graphics hardware including the NVIDIA GeForce 1080 Ti, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and Intel Arc A770. These examples describe a published requirement tier, not a current buying recommendation and not a guarantee of a particular FSR or XeSS experience. They also do not provide a controlled comparison between the cards.
| Published example | How to interpret it for upscaling |
|---|---|
| NVIDIA GeForce 1080 Ti | An example in Steam’s recommended graphics listing; it does not establish DLSS 5 support or performance. |
| AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT | An example of recommended AMD hardware; actual FSR availability and quality still depend on the game build and driver. |
| Intel Arc A770 | An example of recommended Intel hardware; XeSS visibility and behavior should be confirmed in the current installation. |
VRAM capacity, CPU load, storage streaming and other graphics settings can change the outcome. If lowering the upscaler mode does not improve frame rate, check whether the workload is CPU-limited or whether another setting is consuming memory before assuming the reconstruction method is ineffective.
Troubleshooting missing or poor upscaling options
The option is not listed
Confirm that you are using the PC version, the latest game patch and a current driver. Restart the game after a driver update, then check the graphics settings again. Because the FAQ qualifies support by device, a missing option may be an implementation limitation rather than a configuration error.
The image is blurry
Move from Performance to Quality, then reduce or reset Upscale Sharpness if halos are present. Check that the output resolution has not changed. If native resolution is acceptable for your frame-rate target, use it as the reference and reduce a different setting instead.
Flicker or ghosting appears in motion
Repeat the comparison in the same scene and camera movement. Test the other supported upscaler at the same mode. Lowering sharpness can reduce shimmer, but it cannot eliminate every temporal artifact. If neither method is stable enough, native rendering may be the cleaner choice.
Best Value
Frame rate does not improve
Check whether the scene is CPU-limited, whether VRAM is full or whether another setting dominates the workload. Use a repeatable route and compare frame times, not just the displayed average. Upscaling primarily reduces GPU rendering work; it cannot guarantee a gain in a CPU-bound scene.
A driver feature is advertised but unavailable
Read the current AMD compatibility notes for the title and verify the minimum integrated FSR version and any marked-title requirements. Do not infer that a Redstone feature listed for the game is native, universal or enabled on your card without those conditions being met.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical decision guide
- You have an AMD Radeon GPU: select FSR first, begin in Quality mode, and compare XeSS only if it is also exposed. If a newer AMD ML-based feature is your goal, check whether your card and driver meet AMD’s separate requirements.
- You have an Intel Arc GPU: test XeSS when available, then compare FSR under identical conditions. Keep the Arc driver current and note the game version.
- You need more frames and can accept softer detail: move from Quality to Performance, then tune sharpness carefully.
- You see distracting artifacts: test the alternate upscaler or return to native resolution and lower another GPU-heavy setting.
- You want a DLSS 5 equivalent: do not assume FSR or XeSS provides the same neural-rendering scope described by NVIDIA. In this game, they are supported upscaling choices with their own image-quality trade-offs.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—prove
The official game documentation establishes support, the meaning of the mode controls and the separate listing for DLSS Frame Generation. AMD’s pages establish compatibility conditions for its newer FSR features. NVIDIA’s announcement establishes how NVIDIA characterizes DLSS 5. None of these sources supplies an independent, current, like-for-like benchmark of FSR versus XeSS across AMD and Intel GPUs in Hogwarts Legacy.
Consequently, a claim that one option always looks better or runs faster would be broader than the evidence allows. The defensible method is controlled testing on your own GPU, at your own output resolution and in the scenes where you notice performance or image-quality problems.
The Bottom Line
For AMD and Intel players, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS are the official Hogwarts Legacy alternatives to DLSS. Start with Quality mode, hold every other setting constant, inspect motion as well as still detail, and choose the option that delivers a stable image at your target frame rate. Treat AMD’s newer Redstone and ML-based features as separately qualified technologies, and do not present either FSR or XeSS as a proven one-for-one replacement for DLSS 5’s broader neural-rendering design.
