The best Unturned roleplay server depends on your region, tolerance for mods, and how strictly you want roleplay enforced. Current listings include Life RP, Pandahut Unturned, Roez #1, and Brad’s Gaming Network, but populations, rules and even availability can change within hours. Check a live server directory and the operator’s Discord immediately before joining.
If you want to run a server, use Unturned Dedicated Server (U3DS) through SteamCMD, obtain a Game Server Login Token (GSLT), configure Fake IP or port forwarding, and then add Workshop content and a plugin framework. The technical installation is straightforward; the difficult work is building rules, moderation, jobs, economy and onboarding that make roleplay sustainable.

The following options were visible in listings reviewed for October 2026. They are starting points, not permanent rankings. A server can be full, offline, resetting its map or changing from roleplay to PvP between directory refreshes, so verify its status, ping, rules and Discord activity before downloading content.

Unturned-servers.net says its status is refreshed every five minutes, but a refresh interval still cannot predict the next evening’s population. Treat every directory number as a timestamped measurement rather than a promise.

How to choose an RP server that will suit you
Before joining, compare the things that determine how a session actually feels. A server with a large slot limit can be empty, while a smaller whitelisted community may provide constant scenes and faster staff responses.
Population, region and ping
Look for actual concurrent players during the hours you play, not only maximum slots or Discord membership. Choose a geographically close region when possible; high latency makes driving, shooting and voice interaction feel unreliable. Join at your normal play time and test a busy period before committing to a large Workshop download.
Roleplay standard and whitelist
Read the rules for metagaming, powergaming, random deathmatch, vehicle theft, hostage scenes and combat logging. Open servers are easier to enter but may have inconsistent scenes. Applications and whitelists add friction, yet they give moderators a way to teach expectations and remove repeat offenders. Check whether applications are reviewed continuously or only after scheduled waves.

Ask which map is live and how many Workshop items are required. A map or collection that changes weekly can consume bandwidth and invalidate characters or bases. Find the wipe policy before investing time: some communities reset economy and property on a fixed schedule, while others preserve progress and only reset after a technical failure. The rule should explain what happens to money, vehicles, licenses, faction ranks and stored items.
Economy, jobs and monetization
Good RP servers explain how players earn, spend and lose money. Look for a documented set of jobs, taxes, licenses, property rules and item prices rather than an economy controlled informally by staff. Confirm whether donations provide cosmetic benefits only or affect money, weapons, queue priority or property; pay-to-win advantages can undermine civilian and law-enforcement scenes.
Staff, Discord and support
Read recent announcements, not only the welcome message. You want visible restart notices, incident reports, appeal instructions and answers to technical questions. A useful Discord has a clear support channel, a way to report rule breaks privately, and moderators active across the server’s main time zones. Check whether staff decisions are logged and whether appeals are handled by someone other than the original moderator when practical.

Joining a server safely and with fewer surprises
- Check live status: Use a current directory and the operator’s Discord on the day you plan to play. Confirm the server name, address, map, player count and region.
- Read the complete rules: Pay particular attention to character names, voice requirements, safe zones, combat boundaries, police procedures, property ownership and punishments.
- Install the required Workshop collection: Let Unturned finish downloading every dependency before joining. Missing or outdated files commonly cause disconnects or invisible assets.
- Complete onboarding: Submit the whitelist form, link any required account and join the correct in-game faction or job channel. Do not assume that Discord membership equals whitelist approval.
- Create a simple first character: Start with a civilian, medic, shop worker or other role that can meet people without requiring restricted equipment. Learn local procedures before applying for police or faction leadership.
- Record support contacts: Save the appeal and technical-support channels. If you are kicked or lose progress, include your account name, approximate time, server, map and any error message rather than arguing in public chat.
What you need to host an Unturned server
Smartly Dressed Games states that all multiplayer servers use the Unturned Dedicated Server tool, installed and updated through Valve’s SteamCMD. You can run it on a Windows or Linux computer, a spare machine or a managed game-server service. Unturned-specific hardware is not required; a stable wired connection is a practical choice for the host, especially when configuring internet access.
- A SteamCMD installation and enough disk space for the server, save data, Workshop maps and backups.
- A unique server identity (ServerID) so saves and configuration are kept in their own folder.
- A Game Server Login Token (GSLT) for public-list visibility.
- A reachable network path: Fake IP or correctly configured port forwarding for internet play.
- Administrative access to the host and router if you are forwarding ports.
- Time to test Workshop dependencies, plugins, permissions and backups before inviting the public.
Install the official dedicated server with SteamCMD
The exact menu names can differ slightly by operating system, but the official workflow is the same: install or update the U3DS files with SteamCMD, create a ServerID, configure commands, then launch the helper script.
Windows procedure
- Download and extract SteamCMD into a dedicated folder such as
C:steamcmd. - Open SteamCMD and sign in anonymously with
login anonymous. - Install or update the Unturned Dedicated Server app with
app_update 1110390. Run the command again whenever you deliberately update the server. - In the U3DS directory, create the server’s identity through the normal server launch flow and give it a unique ServerID, for example
MyRPServer. The matching folder stores the save and configuration files. - Open the server’s
Commands.datand add the map, name, mode, password and other commands you intend to use. Start with the official example map syntax such asMap PEI,Map Washington,Map RussiaorMap Germany. - Launch
ServerHelper.bat. For an internet instance, the official example launch argument is+InternetServer/MyServer; replace the identity with your own ServerID. - Watch the console for the map loading, Workshop downloads and binding errors. Once the server is stable, stop it with the console command
shutdowninstead of closing the window so the save is written cleanly.
Linux procedure
- Install SteamCMD from your distribution’s package source or Valve’s distribution, then log in anonymously with
login anonymous. - Run
app_update 1110390in the SteamCMD prompt to install or update U3DS. - Create a unique ServerID and edit that instance’s
Commands.datwith your map and server settings. - Launch the instance with
ServerHelper.sh, passing the internet-server argument in the same form as the Windows example, such as+InternetServer/MyServer. - Keep the process under a service manager or terminal multiplexer so it survives a disconnected shell, and schedule controlled restarts rather than killing the process.
- Use the server console’s
shutdowncommand for maintenance and before backups or upgrades.
Do not reuse one ServerID for unrelated worlds. Separate identities make it possible to stage updates, restore a backup and run test and production instances without mixing saves.
Make the server visible on the internet
Get and apply a Game Server Login Token
Smartly Dressed Games’ documentation states that every server must use a valid Game Server Login Token to appear in the public server list. Create a token for the account and app required by the official token process, then place it in the server’s configuration as documented. If the token is missing, expired, tied to the wrong account or pasted with extra characters, players may be able to connect directly while the server remains absent from search.
Choose Fake IP or port forwarding
The official networking guidance supports either Fake IP or port forwarding and says using both is unnecessary. Fake IP is easier for most servers because it avoids manual router rules. Port forwarding gives you direct control but requires a reachable public address, correct UDP rules and a router that is not behind carrier-grade NAT.

- Port forwarding: Forward the server’s required game port to the host’s fixed local address, allow the executable through the operating system firewall, and test from a different network such as a phone hotspot.
- LAN: A LAN server is limited to invited or local-network friends and does not appear in the public internet list. It is appropriate for a private session, not a public RP community.
Different internet servers need different ports. The server-list query uses the next port, so reserve a consecutive pair for each instance and avoid reusing a port already assigned to another server. If a listing is missing, check the actual bound ports, firewall rules, router NAT table and GSLT before changing plugins.

Set maps, Workshop content and server commands
Commands.dat basics
Keep the first configuration minimal and add one change at a time. Set the map with a line such as Map Washington, then add the server name, mode, password, perspective and other commands supported by your current game version. Map names must match the official identifier; a spelling error can stop startup or load a different world than expected.
WorkshopDownloadConfig.json
Use WorkshopDownloadConfig.json to list Workshop file IDs for maps, vehicles, structures and other content. During startup, Unturned downloads the configured content, and connecting clients receive the required files. A practical workflow is:
- Create the JSON file in the ServerID configuration area and enter each Workshop file ID in the format required by the current U3DS documentation.
- Start the server with no public players and watch for every download to complete.
- Connect from a clean client or a second account to verify that the collection is delivered automatically and that no dependency is missing.
- Record the collection and version in your change log. Remove abandoned items rather than leaving broken IDs in the startup list.
Test Workshop updates on a staging ServerID first. A creator can change an asset’s dependencies or behavior without notice; production should only receive a tested set.

Official documentation names Rocket and OpenMod as frameworks for advanced plugin setups. A current compatibility guide describes OpenMod as the modern default for new projects, while Rocket remains useful when a required plugin targets only Rocket, when migrating an established server or when staff already understand Rocket permissions.

Do not install a framework merely because a server list advertises it. Define the RP design first, then select maintained plugins that implement that design. Mixing abandoned plugins, duplicate economy systems or two competing permission models is a common source of crashes and privilege leaks.

Access and character policy
- Decide whether the server is open, application-based or fully whitelisted.
- Define character names, age limits if any, voice or text requirements, multiple-character rules and inactivity handling.
- Explain metagaming, powergaming, random deathmatch, combat logging and fail-roleplay with concrete examples.
Jobs, factions and emergency roles
List civilian jobs, police, medical, fire, government and criminal roles, then define who can issue orders and what equipment each role may use. A police faction needs arrest, evidence, search, pursuit and use-of-force procedures; an EMS faction needs treatment boundaries and a way to handle downed players without turning every incident into a combat reset.
Economy and property
Publish starting funds, wages, taxes, licenses, shop ownership, rent, vehicle prices and confiscation rules. State who can create or remove money and how transactions are logged. Property systems should define abandonment, eviction, shared ownership, storage limits and what happens at a wipe.
Combat and world boundaries
Mark safe zones, restricted weapons, robbery rules, hostage requirements and the point at which a scene becomes PvP. Explain how players may report a dispute without breaking character, and how staff preserve evidence such as chat, combat and transaction logs.
Moderation and appeals
Use a predictable escalation path: warning, temporary restriction, suspension and permanent removal, with exceptions for severe abuse. Log the moderator, rule, evidence and duration. Publish an appeal route and a target response time; never require players to argue a case in global chat.
Operate the server after launch
- Publish onboarding first: Put rules, Discord invite, Workshop requirements, connection details and application instructions in one easy-to-find post.
- Cover time zones: Assign moderators across the hours players actually connect, and define who handles incidents when no senior administrator is online.
- Announce maintenance: Give advance notice of restarts, wipes, economy changes and plugin migrations. Include expected downtime and whether player data is affected.
- Back up consistently: Back up the entire ServerID folder and plugin/configuration data before updates, migrations and economy changes. Keep at least one copy away from the host.
- Monitor real health: Track concurrent players, crashes, startup duration, Workshop download failures, memory growth and support response time.
- Recheck after updates: Verify GSLT validity, port bindings, map names, Workshop dependencies and plugin compatibility after every game or framework update.
Troubleshooting common failures

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, ports, updates and backups, but you must provide a reachable network, keep the machine online and respond to crashes. A managed service can simplify persistent uptime, automatic backups and networking, at the cost of less control and an ongoing fee. The same U3DS, GSLT, Workshop and plugin requirements still apply; managed hosting does not remove the need to design and moderate the RP community.

For a private test with friends, a LAN instance is enough. For a public community, choose the option that lets you monitor logs, restore the ServerID folder and apply security updates quickly. Do not promise 24-hour availability until you have tested restarts, backups and support coverage.
