The best fit depends on whether you want a new phone or will consider used. The Motorola Moto G Power (2026) is a price-ceiling candidate at $299.99, but a reviewed Amazon listing showed $399.99, so it does not qualify unless the exact unlocked model is currently priced below $300. For a less expensive new-phone option, consider the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G; for a used phone, the Google Pixel 8a is a strong value candidate.

Use this shortlist as a starting point, not a guarantee that a particular listing is under budget or unlocked. Prices and seller inventory change, and the exact model and carrier compatibility matter.

|---|---|---|---|
| Motorola Moto G Power (2026) | Android Authority listed it at $299.99 in its 2026 guide. Android Central showed an Amazon listing at $399.99 on a page reviewed October 7, 2026. | Buyers prioritizing battery life, durability, a large display, expandable storage, and a headphone jack. | At $299.99 it is right at the cap; confirm the current price and that the exact variant is unlocked. If it costs more than $300, it is not a qualifying pick. |
| Samsung Galaxy A17 5G | Cloudspress listed an unlocked price of $199.99 in its 2026 buyer’s guide. | Buyers seeking a lower-cost new-phone candidate and a long stated security-update horizon. | Verify the exact listing is unlocked. Samsung’s U.S. product page for the 128GB model captured for this comparison was an AT&T variant, not proof of an unlocked offer. |
| Google Pixel 8a, used | Swappa reported an average 128GB sale price of about $249 using marketplace data as of September 23, 2026. | Buyers open to used condition who value a longer remaining support window. | The average is not a guaranteed asking price or proof that a particular phone is unlocked. Check condition, carrier lock, account locks, and IMEI status. |
Is the Moto G Power (2026) worth buying at the $300 limit?
It makes sense if your priorities are endurance and practical hardware rather than speed. Android Authority’s 2026 guide lists the Moto G Power (2026) at $299.99. Android Central’s reviewed Amazon listing, however, showed $399.99 on October 7, 2026; at that price it is over budget. Check the live total and exact unlocked variant before treating it as a sub-$300 option.
Where it stands out
- It is positioned around battery life and durability, with a large display.
- It includes expandable storage and a headphone jack, useful if you want to add storage or use wired headphones.
Where it compromises
- Performance is entry-level, so it is a weaker fit for demanding games or heavy multitasking.
- It has 128GB of internal storage. Expandability can help, but it does not change the built-in capacity.
- Android Central did not confirm an official support duration in its 2026 comparison. Do not assume a specific number of years without checking Motorola’s current support information for the exact model.
Is the Galaxy A17 5G the better new-phone value?
At the $199.99 unlocked price reported by Cloudspress in its 2026 buyer’s guide, the Galaxy A17 5G leaves more room under the $300 ceiling than the Moto G Power. That guide says Samsung offers six years of security updates. Treat both the price and the unlocked status as listing-specific: the Samsung U.S. product page reviewed for this comparison showed a 128GB AT&T variant, so it does not establish that a particular unlocked SKU is available at that price.

Should you buy a used Pixel 8a instead?
If used condition is acceptable, the Pixel 8a is a compelling alternative. Swappa’s September 23, 2026 marketplace data puts the average sale price of the 128GB version at about $249 and lists support through May 2031. The price is a historical marketplace average, not a current guaranteed offer; inspect each listing individually.

- Confirm the phone is unlocked and compatible with your carrier.
- Ask whether it is signed out of the previous owner’s account and check that no account lock remains.
- Check the IMEI status and review the seller’s condition description, return terms, and battery condition if available.
- Compare the final price, including shipping and any applicable fees, with a new phone before deciding.
How to verify a phone is really under $300 and unlocked
- Check the exact model and variant. Do not rely on a family name alone; listings can mix carrier-specific and unlocked versions.
- Confirm unlocked status in the listing. Look for an explicit unlocked designation, then check the seller’s details and return policy rather than inferring it from the phone’s appearance or price.
- Check carrier compatibility. Verify that the specific model works with your carrier’s network and service, especially if buying a carrier-branded variant.
- Calculate the total. Compare the checkout price, including shipping and fees, with the $300 limit. A list price below budget does not guarantee the final total will qualify.
- For used phones, inspect condition and ownership status. Check for account locks, carrier locks, and IMEI problems before purchase.
- Compare the support horizon and hardware to your needs. Consider software-update information, performance, battery and durability, storage, and camera priorities instead of choosing on price alone.
Which choice fits your priorities?
- Choose the Moto G Power (2026) if battery life, durability, expandable storage, and a headphone jack matter most—and you find the exact unlocked model at or below $300.
- Consider the Galaxy A17 5G if you want a lower-cost new-phone option and can verify an unlocked, carrier-compatible listing.
- Consider a used Pixel 8a if you accept used condition, want support stated through May 2031, and can verify the individual seller’s phone and terms.
