There is no single unlocked phone that is best for every international trip. The Google Pixel 10 is a current candidate, and the iPhone 17 family is a strong alternative, but whether either will work depends on the exact regional model, destination networks, and mobile plan. Check those details before buying; “unlocked” alone does not guarantee overseas compatibility.
What “unlocked” does—and does not—mean
An unlocked phone is not restricted to one carrier, but that answers only the carrier-lock question. It does not establish that the handset supports a destination carrier’s cellular bands, that its eSIM works with the plan you want, or that a provider will activate it. Treat each as a separate check.

- Carrier lock: Confirm with the seller or current carrier that the specific handset is unlocked.
- Network compatibility: Match the exact model’s LTE and 5G bands to the networks available where you will travel.
- SIM and plan support: Check whether your chosen carrier or travel eSIM provider supports that model, plan, and destination.
Which unlocked phones are worth considering?
Google Pixel 10
The Pixel 10 is a reasonable current candidate if you want an unlocked Android phone. Tom’s Guide includes it in its 2026 unlocked-phone guide, while Google’s official specifications let you check the bands and SIM details for the specific regional model. That makes it a candidate to investigate—not a demonstrated universal winner for international travel. Tom’s Guide’s unlocked-phone guide and Google’s Pixel hardware specifications are useful starting points.

Apple iPhone 17 family
The iPhone 17 family is another route, especially if you want to use an eSIM for travel. Apple explains how to use eSIM internationally and advises checking both provider support and the iPhone’s band compatibility. Do not assume every iPhone 17 model sold in every market has the same SIM arrangement or radio bands; verify the exact model. Apple’s international eSIM guidance describes the relevant checks.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Neither option can be ranked as the best for every destination from the available evidence: there is no comparative international field test establishing reception, battery endurance, or durability across countries.
How to check whether a phone will work overseas
- Identify the exact model and sales region. Get the model number for the handset you intend to buy, not just its product-family name. Regional variants can differ in supported bands and SIM configuration.
- Check the destination carrier’s network bands. Compare its supported LTE and 5G bands with the bands listed for that precise phone model in the manufacturer’s specifications. A partial match may not provide the same coverage or service as a full match.
- Confirm the SIM arrangement. Check whether the variant has a physical SIM tray, eSIM, or eSIM-only design. If you need to retain your home number while using a travel line, verify that the model and your home carrier support the setup you plan to use.
- Confirm activation and plan compatibility. Ask the carrier or travel eSIM provider whether it supports the handset, destination, and plan. Check activation requirements and coverage before departure; eSIM availability on a phone does not guarantee that a particular provider will activate it.
- Verify the handset is unlocked. Ask the seller or carrier to confirm the status of that specific device. Do not treat eSIM capability as proof that the phone is unlocked.
Should you use a travel eSIM or your home carrier?
An eSIM can make switching to a local or travel plan easier without swapping a physical card, but it does not remove provider, device, or regional restrictions. Apple says an unlocked eSIM-only iPhone can be activated with network providers in different countries or regions, while also directing customers to confirm plan support and band compatibility. Apple further notes that an eSIM from a mainland China network provider cannot be used on a device purchased outside mainland China. Apple’s guidance sets out these conditions.

Choose the connection approach around your trip rather than the phone label. Compare home-carrier roaming, a local plan, and a regional travel plan based on your countries, length of stay, data use, voice and SMS needs, and whether you need hotspot access. No single plan choice follows from buying a Pixel or iPhone; provider coverage and terms vary by itinerary.
Why the exact regional version matters
“Pixel 10” or “iPhone 17” is not enough information to confirm compatibility. Google publishes regional Pixel model numbers and variant-specific LTE and 5G bands, along with eSIM information. Apple also directs buyers to check band support for the relevant iPhone. Consult the manufacturer’s entry for the model number you will actually receive, then compare it with the destination carrier’s requirements.

SIM trays also vary by market. GSMA’s 2026 report says US Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL models launched as eSIM-only devices in August 2025, and describes eSIM-only iPhone 17 designs expanding into multiple international markets. That demonstrates why buyers should verify the sale-region variant; it does not establish that eSIM-only is preferable for every traveler. GSMA, The Mobile Economy 2026.

- Several countries: Check whether the same phone variant supports the bands and SIM options you need across each destination, and compare a regional plan with separate local options.
- Need your home number available: Confirm simultaneous-line support and your home carrier’s roaming and eSIM rules before relying on a travel line.
- Require a physical SIM: Confirm the exact market variant includes a tray. Do not assume it will because another version of the same phone family has one.
- Choosing between Pixel and iPhone: First rule out variants that fail your compatibility or SIM requirements. Then decide based on your budget, preferred operating system, size, camera, and battery priorities; the sources cited here do not provide a comparative travel score for those preferences.
The practical choice is the unlocked handset whose exact regional model matches your destination networks and preferred plan. Pixel 10 and iPhone 17 are sensible candidates to check, but the model number and provider compatibility—not the headline name—settle whether either suits your trip.
