The best unlocked foldable phone in the US depends on whether you need a tablet-like workspace or a small phone that folds shut. For a large-screen replacement for a conventional phone and tablet, start with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, or Motorola Razr Fold (2026). For a compact flip design, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 is the current Samsung option. There is no defensible universal winner for camera, battery, durability, performance, or value because the available evidence does not provide a complete, comparable independent test set across these models.
Use the shortlist below, then verify the exact US model number, storage price, supported bands, eSIM capability, activation rules, and plan requirements with your carrier before paying. “Unlocked” means the phone is not tied to one carrier; it does not guarantee every feature on every US network.

2026 unlocked foldable shortlist
Samsung’s US catalog lists three current Galaxy Z models: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Flip8. Samsung’s US launch announcement is dated August 5, 2026, with general availability beginning August 7, 2026. Google’s US Store confirms the Pixel 10 Pro Fold as an unlocked foldable, and Motorola’s US product page identifies the 2026 Razr Fold as unlocked. Samsung’s catalog also shows the previous Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7, which may be worth considering if a live discount or refurbished offer is available.
| Model | Form factor | Officially confirmed details |

| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 | Book-style | Samsung US catalog listing with an unlocked purchase path |
| Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold | Book-style | Google US Store listing; 6.4-inch folded Actua display; unlocked phone lets the buyer choose a carrier or plan |

| Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 | Flip-style | Samsung US catalog listing with an unlocked purchase path |
Those descriptions come from manufacturer pages. A July 24, 2026 TechRadar roundup provides secondary editorial context on current foldable trade-offs, but it does not establish a single laboratory comparison covering every phone above.

Samsung’s announced US launch prices
Samsung Electronics announced the following US starting prices for the new Galaxy Z series in 2026:
| Model | Announced US starting price | Price qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra | $2,099.99 | Samsung Electronics launch starting price for 2026 |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 | $1,899.99 | Samsung Electronics launch starting price for 2026 |
| Galaxy Z Flip8 | $1,199.99 | Samsung Electronics launch starting price for 2026 |
These are reference points from the launch announcement, not guaranteed checkout prices. Samsung’s live pages can show promotions, different storage configurations, or prices that have changed since launch. Check the product page on the day you buy. The available manufacturer material does not establish a comparable current unlocked price for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold or Razr Fold, so do not infer one from the Samsung figures.
Choose the shape before the brand
Book-style foldables: more workspace in your pocket
A book-style phone opens like a small tablet. When closed, it behaves like a conventional smartphone; when open, the larger inner display is useful for reading, split-screen work, document review, maps, photo editing, and video. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and Razr Fold (2026) belong in this decision group.

This design is usually the better fit if you routinely switch between two apps, want a larger keyboard or canvas, or hope to replace a phone-and-small-tablet combination. The trade-off is physical bulk and a higher purchase price than flip-style models. You must also decide whether the outer display is comfortable enough for quick tasks or whether you will open the phone frequently.
Flip-style foldables: smaller when closed
A flip phone folds vertically so the closed device occupies less pocket or bag space. The Galaxy Z Flip8 is the current model in this shortlist. The compact footprint is attractive if your priority is portability, while the unfolded screen gives you a normal full-height smartphone display when you need it.
The key question is how much you can accomplish on the cover display. If you mainly check notifications, control music, glance at directions, or answer short messages without opening the phone, a flip design can feel unusually convenient. If you read long documents, edit spreadsheets, or work in two apps at once, the smaller closed format offers less room and you will rely on the inner screen.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra
The Fold8 Ultra is Samsung’s highest-priced 2026 book-style option, with an announced US starting price of $2,099.99. Choose it when you want the top tier of Samsung’s current large-screen foldable line and are prepared to pay the launch premium. The official catalog confirms an unlocked purchase path, but the available material does not provide a complete independent camera, battery, durability, or performance comparison against the Fold8.

- Expansive foldable 7.6″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, offering a tablet-like canvas for multitasking, split-screen productivity, and immersive media — while folding down to a compact form for easy portability.
Before ordering, compare the live storage-specific price with the standard Fold8. A higher list price only makes sense if the Ultra’s particular hardware, storage tier, or features match your priorities; the launch announcement alone does not establish how much faster, longer-lasting, or more durable it is.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8
The Fold8 is the mainstream Samsung book-style choice and starts at $1,899.99 in Samsung’s 2026 US launch announcement. It is a sensible starting point for buyers who want Samsung’s foldable software ecosystem and a large inner screen without moving to the Ultra’s price tier.
Treat the $1,899.99 figure as a launch baseline. Samsung may attach the starting price to a particular storage configuration, trade-in promotion, or limited-time offer. Confirm the exact unlocked SKU, included storage, final tax and shipping, and return terms at checkout.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8
The Flip8 starts at $1,199.99 in Samsung Electronics’ 2026 US announcement and is the compact flip-style candidate in this list. It is the natural choice for people who value a smaller closed footprint more than a tablet-like inner workspace.

Your daily tasks determine whether the cover display is sufficient. If you frequently compose long messages, compare documents, or use two apps at the same time, the book-style alternatives may save more frustration even though they cost more.
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold
Google’s US Store identifies the Pixel 10 Pro Fold as a foldable and describes a 6.4-inch folded Actua display. Google also states that its unlocked phone is not tied to a specific carrier and lets the buyer choose a carrier or plan. That supports its place on an unlocked book-style shortlist.
The wording does not prove compatibility with every US carrier, band combination, or plan feature. Verify the exact US SKU with your carrier before activation. The available information also does not establish a current storage-by-storage price or a head-to-head independent test result against Samsung or Motorola, so evaluate the live checkout page and your own priorities rather than assuming a camera or battery advantage.

Motorola Razr Fold (2026)
Motorola’s US page identifies the 2026 Razr Fold as unlocked, describes an 8.1-inch foldable display, and lists several use modes. It is therefore a relevant book-style alternative for shoppers who want a large unfolded screen and hands-on mode flexibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Check the live US price, storage option, warranty terms, repair route, supported network bands, and eSIM behavior for the precise model number you intend to buy.
Previous-generation Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7
Samsung’s current catalog still lists the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7. They could make sense as discounted or refurbished purchases, especially if the price gap to the 2026 models is substantial. However, current unlocked stock and configuration-specific prices were not confirmed for each one. Treat any listing as a separate verification exercise: confirm seller identity, model number, condition, return window, remaining warranty, and carrier compatibility.
Compare the cover display with your real routine
Foldable specifications are easy to admire and easy to misuse. Write down the tasks you perform while walking, commuting, or standing in a queue, then decide whether you would open the phone for each one.
- Quick interactions: notifications, timers, music controls, short replies, and authentication favor a useful outer or cover display.
- Long sessions: reading, writing, spreadsheets, photo work, video, and two-app layouts favor the inner display of a book-style phone.
- One-handed use: a narrow or closed screen can be easier to hold, but a tiny keyboard may increase typing errors.
- Frequent opening: if most tasks require the phone to be unfolded, the closed-screen advantage matters less than the inner-screen ergonomics.
Do not compare diagonal measurements from different positions as if they describe the same experience. Google’s 6.4-inch figure is specifically for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s folded Actua display, while Motorola’s 8.1-inch figure describes the Razr Fold’s foldable display. Those measurements do not form a complete cross-brand screen matrix.

The available evidence does not provide a complete, controlled test set for these models. That means a responsible buying guide cannot declare one phone the camera winner, battery champion, durability leader, fastest performer, or best value across the entire shortlist.
Use independent tests only when they identify the exact model, software version, test method, and conditions. A battery result from one brightness setting or a camera sample from one scene cannot automatically describe another configuration. Manufacturer claims are useful for features and design intent, but they are not substitutes for comparable measurements.

When reading a review, look for:
- the exact US model and storage configuration;
- screen-on time or runtime methodology, including brightness and network conditions;
- camera scenes, lighting, stabilization, and processing settings;
- charging measurements that distinguish wired, wireless, and advertised maximum rates;
- heat, throttling, and sustained-performance observations rather than a single benchmark score;
- fold-cycle, hinge, water-resistance, or drop evidence that identifies the test protocol.
If a source discusses only one phone, use it to understand that phone’s behavior, not to rank every competitor.
Software, multitasking, stylus, and desktop features
Book-style foldables are often purchased for software flexibility: split-screen layouts, floating windows, drag-and-drop, or desktop-style work. These are important comparison criteria, but no complete feature-by-feature matrix for the 2026 models is established here. Check the manufacturer’s current software pages and the exact review of the model you choose for supported multitasking gestures, app compatibility, stylus support, desktop modes, and update commitments.
Do not assume that a stylus works on every foldable screen or that a desktop mode supports every monitor, dock, or application. Confirm whether the accessory is included, optional, or unsupported, and whether a particular mode requires a cable, wireless display, or compatible accessory.
Durability, repair, and support questions
Foldables add a hinge and a flexible inner display, so support terms matter as much as headline specifications. The manufacturer pages identified here do not establish a directly comparable set of repair prices, hinge guarantees, accidental-damage coverage, turnaround times, or long-term parts availability for all five current candidates.
Before purchase, obtain written answers for your exact US model:
- What warranty covers manufacturing defects, and for how long?
- Are hinge wear, inner-screen damage, or crease-related issues treated as defects or accidental damage?
- Where can an authorized service center repair the phone?
- What is the out-of-warranty screen or hinge replacement estimate?
- Are replacement parts available in the US, and how long is the expected repair turnaround?
- Does a trade-in or refurbished device carry a different warranty or return policy?
Use a case designed for the precise model. Never assume a rigid protector intended for a conventional glass display is safe for a flexible inner panel; follow the phone maker’s installation and care guidance.

Unlocked does not mean universally compatible
An unlocked phone gives you carrier choice, but network service still depends on hardware and plan support. Google explicitly describes its unlocked phone as not tied to a specific carrier or plan, while Samsung and Motorola provide unlocked purchase paths for the listed models. None of those statements guarantees every feature on every US network.

Complete this check before buying:
- Copy the exact US model number or SKU from the manufacturer checkout page.
- Give that identifier to your carrier, not just the marketing name.
- Ask which LTE and 5G bands are supported in your region.
- Confirm eSIM support, physical-SIM behavior, and whether dual-SIM use is allowed on your plan.
- Ask whether the device must be registered or activated through a specific process.
- Verify requirements for voice-over-LTE, Wi-Fi calling, hotspot use, international roaming, and 5G access.
- Confirm that the plan permits an unlocked device and that any installment or promotional credit has no separate carrier lock.
Save the carrier’s written response and the model number with your receipt. A similarly named international or refurbished SKU can have different bands, software, warranty coverage, or activation restrictions.
Storage and price checks that prevent expensive mistakes
Foldable phones are costly, and storage can change the real price more than a headline starting figure suggests. For Samsung’s 2026 models, compare the storage tier attached to the advertised starting price with the tier you actually need. Then check whether a promotion requires a trade-in, a specific payment method, or a carrier activation.
For the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Razr Fold, obtain a live unlocked price for each storage option from the official US page or an authorized seller. Do not copy a price from an overseas listing, a carrier-locked offer, or an expired review. Include sales tax, shipping, case costs, and any protection plan when comparing totals.

- Choose the form: select book-style if the inner workspace is your priority; select flip-style if a smaller closed phone is the main benefit.
- Set a hard budget: use Samsung’s announced $1,199.99 Flip8, $1,899.99 Fold8, and $2,099.99 Fold8 Ultra starting prices as launch reference points, then replace them with current checkout totals.
- Pick two candidates: compare one Samsung model with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold or Razr Fold if you want a broader software or design choice.
- Check the cover-screen workflow: list the tasks you will perform without unfolding and confirm that the outer display supports them comfortably.
- Verify storage and accessories: confirm the exact capacity, included charger or cable, case fit, and whether any stylus or dock is optional.
- Verify carrier compatibility: run the model number through your carrier’s band, eSIM, activation, and plan checks.
- Read support terms: identify the authorized repair channel, warranty exclusions, return period, and accidental-damage options.
- Recheck on purchase day: foldable stock, promotions, prices, and software pages change quickly.
How to choose without an unsupported “winner”
Choose the Fold8 Ultra when
You want Samsung’s premium 2026 book-style option, have room for its $2,099.99 launch starting price, and are willing to verify that its particular features justify the premium over the Fold8.
Choose the Fold8 when
You want a Samsung book-style foldable at a lower announced starting price than the Ultra and prefer a mainstream model rather than the top-priced variant.
Choose the Pixel 10 Pro Fold when
You prefer Google’s foldable software environment, want the documented 6.4-inch folded Actua display, and are prepared to confirm the exact US SKU and carrier support yourself.
Choose the Razr Fold (2026) when
You want Motorola’s unlocked book-style alternative, an officially listed 8.1-inch foldable display, and multiple use modes, while accepting that the available material does not provide a complete independent comparison.
Choose the Flip8 when
Your first requirement is a compact flip-style phone and you are comfortable doing longer tasks on the unfolded screen rather than a large book-style inner display.
Consider Fold7 or Flip7 when
A verified discount or refurbished price is substantially lower and the seller can document current stock, condition, warranty, return rights, storage, and carrier compatibility.
Bottom line
Start with the shape, not the logo. Book-style candidates provide the larger workspace: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Fold8, Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and Motorola’s Razr Fold (2026). The Galaxy Z Flip8 is the compact flip choice. Samsung’s announced 2026 prices establish useful launch benchmarks, but live storage pricing and promotions can differ. Because no complete independent test matrix was established, the most accurate recommendation is a requirements-based shortlist followed by exact-SKU carrier and support checks—not a blanket claim that one model is best for every US buyer.
