Best Ultrabooks in 2026: Choose the Right Laptop for Work on the Go

The best ultrabook depends on your operating system, apps and workload—not just its weight or battery-life headline. For a general-purpose macOS laptop, the MacBook Air M5 is a strong starting point; for a compact Windows option, consider the Dell XPS 13 (2026), but choose its memory configuration carefully. Compare the exact screen, ports, RAM and regional model before buying.

What counts as an ultrabook?

Intel created and trademarked the term in the early 2010s. Today, “ultrabook” is commonly used more broadly for premium thin-and-light laptops, including models that use different processors or operating systems. That makes the category useful as a starting point, not a guarantee of particular performance, ports or battery life. RTINGS explains its current use and category recommendations.

Which ultrabook should you consider?

MacBook Air M5: a general-purpose macOS choice

The MacBook Air M5 is available with 13.6-inch and 15-inch Liquid Retina displays and weighs 2.7 pounds, according to Engadget’s 2026 guide. Its listed features include a 60Hz refresh rate, MagSafe 3, a headphone jack and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Engadget lists battery life of up to 18 hours; that is an upper figure, not a guarantee for every workload. See Engadget’s laptop guide.

In a separate test, Tom’s Guide measured 15 hours and 37 minutes of battery life for the MacBook Air M5 in 2026. That result belongs to Tom’s Guide’s test conditions and should not be treated as a direct comparison with another reviewer’s laptop test. Read Tom’s Guide’s 13-inch laptop guide.

Dell XPS 13 (2026): a compact Windows option

Tom’s Guide lists a 13.4-inch 2.5K touchscreen, Intel Core 5 320, up to 32GB of RAM, a 2.2-pound weight and two USB-C ports. Its 2026 continuous-web-browsing battery test lasted 14 hours and 29 minutes. The guide also flags webcam quality and notes that users with several peripherals may need adapters or a hub. See Tom’s Guide’s XPS 13 review.

TechRadar reports more than 16 hours in its 2026 video-playback battery test, after a reviewer tested the laptop for one week. Video playback and continuous web browsing are different test methods, so this result is not a contradiction or a controlled comparison with Tom’s Guide’s figure. TechRadar also cautions that the base configuration’s 8GB of RAM is unsuitable for demanding software or aggressive multitasking. If you need more than two USB-C ports, plan for a compatible hub or adapters. Read TechRadar’s XPS 13 review.

Other candidates: compare by screen size and intended use

There is no single shortlist that fits every buyer. RTINGS organizes recommendations by display size, naming the MacBook Air 13 M4 (2025), ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED (2024), MacBook Air 15 M4 (2025), Lenovo ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition (2025) and LG gram 16 (2024). These are prior-generation models in a guide accessed in 2026, so use them as comparison candidates rather than assuming they are the newest options. RTINGS also flags OLED flicker on certain models and app compatibility concerns for the ARM-based Surface Laptop 7. Check RTINGS’ size-based recommendations.

How to compare ultrabooks for your workflow

Start with your operating system and required apps

List the software you need for work, school or creative projects, then confirm it supports the laptop’s operating system and processor architecture. This matters especially for Windows on ARM: compatibility can vary by application, so verify support for your essential tools before buying. RTINGS notes the compatibility consideration.

Choose screen size and weight together

A smaller laptop is easier to carry, while a larger screen gives you more room for split-window work. The MacBook Air M5 illustrates the trade-off within one model line: Engadget lists 13.6-inch and 15-inch versions, with a listed weight of 2.7 pounds. Compare the exact size and weight of the configuration you plan to purchase rather than relying on the family name alone.

Read battery results with their test methods

Battery figures are meaningful only alongside their source and conditions. Engadget lists up to 18 hours for the MacBook Air M5; Tom’s Guide measured 15 hours and 37 minutes for that model. For the XPS 13 (2026), Tom’s Guide measured 14 hours and 29 minutes in continuous web browsing, while TechRadar reports more than 16 hours in video playback. These are separate tests, not a unified head-to-head benchmark. Your screen settings, apps and workload also affect how long a laptop lasts away from a charger.

Check ports, memory and storage on the exact configuration

Thin laptops may have fewer built-in connections than your desk setup requires. The XPS 13 (2026) has two USB-C ports in the cited coverage; check whether the specific model supports your displays and accessories, and whether a hub or adapters fit your needs. Choose enough RAM and storage for your software, files and expected ownership period. In particular, TechRadar advises against the XPS 13’s base 8GB RAM configuration for demanding work or heavy multitasking.

Look beyond resolution when assessing a display

Resolution and refresh rate do not fully describe viewing comfort. Check the panel fitted to the exact regional SKU, and consider whether OLED flicker may bother you if you are sensitive to it. RTINGS flags flicker on certain OLED models; that does not establish that every OLED laptop has the same issue.

Verify the model before you buy

  1. Confirm the exact SKU. Match the processor, RAM, storage, display and ports on the retailer’s listing to the configuration you intend to purchase.
  2. Check local availability and price. Model generations, configurations, inventory and prices vary by market and change over time; verify them where you live.
  3. Confirm software support. Check that your required applications run on the laptop’s operating system and processor architecture, particularly if it uses Windows on ARM.
  4. Plan your desk connections. Count the peripherals and displays you use, then confirm the laptop’s ports and whether a compatible hub or adapters are needed.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
