Valve lists Android TV and Amazon Fire TV as supported receiving platforms, while Steam Support says the Steam Link app is no longer available on Samsung TV.
Use this guide to verify compatibility for the exact television or streaming-device model before buying, then configure the host computer, network and controller for a reliable living-room gaming setup.

What Steam Link on a TV actually does
Steam Link is a streaming receiver, not a console built into the television. A computer running Steam renders the game. Steam Link sends that computer’s video and audio to the TV and returns controller input to the computer. The host PC therefore remains part of every Steam Link setup; the TV cannot launch or render a PC game by itself.
The receiving side can be a TV app or a separate device connected by HDMI. Valve’s Remote Play documentation lists Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android phones and tablets, Raspberry Pi, Windows, Linux and macOS among supported destinations. Support is platform- and device-specific, so “Android TV” or “Fire TV” on a product box is a starting point rather than a guarantee for every model sold in every country.

Which TVs support Steam Link?
Android TV televisions
Valve’s Android support information says many Android TVs running Android 5.0 or newer can use Steam Link. “Many” is important: manufacturers can ship different processors, firmware, app stores and regional software packages under the same broad platform name. Before purchase, open the television’s own app store or check the manufacturer’s exact model listing for Steam Link. Confirm the country or region as well, because app availability can differ.
An Android TV set with a confirmed app listing is the cleanest all-in-one arrangement. You install Steam Link directly on the TV, connect it to the computer running Steam, pair a controller and play without another box. The TV still needs a network path to the host computer, and Valve recommends Ethernet for both devices when possible.
Amazon Fire TV televisions and receivers
Valve lists Amazon Fire TV as a supported receiving destination. That category includes televisions with Fire TV software and external Fire TV streaming devices. The app’s presence can vary by model, software version and region, so check the exact SKU’s app store rather than relying only on the platform name.
A Fire TV television can provide the same direct-app convenience as Android TV when Steam Link is available. If your existing television lacks the app, a compatible Fire TV streaming device can add the receiving function through HDMI. Verify that the specific device can install the current Steam Link app before buying.

Samsung televisions
Steam Support states: “Steam Link is no longer available on Samsung TV.” The notice explains that Samsung no longer supports the corresponding app plugin. This refers to the native Samsung Smart TV app; it does not mean that a Samsung display cannot be used for Steam Link at all. Connect a supported external receiver—such as a verified Android TV or Fire TV device—to an HDMI input instead.
Do not assume that an older Samsung model will regain the app after a firmware update. Treat native availability as discontinued and plan the purchase around an external receiver.
Other smart-TV platforms
If a television’s operating system is not one of Valve’s listed receiving destinations, the practical route is an external supported receiver. The TV only needs a suitable HDMI input and a way to connect the receiver to the network. Check both the receiver’s Steam Link app availability and the TV’s input capabilities before ordering.

How to choose the best TV or TV-plus-device setup
1. Verify software before judging picture quality
Start with the television’s exact model number and sales region. Search its built-in app store for Steam Link, or obtain written compatibility information for that model. A retailer’s generic “Android TV” or “smart TV” label is not enough. If the app is absent, add the cost and physical requirements of a supported external receiver to your plan.

2. Check the network path
Steam Link depends on communication between the receiving device and the host computer. Valve’s Android app listing recommends Ethernet for both Android TV and the host computer for best performance. Its Steam Link hardware guidance likewise strongly recommends wired networking. Prefer a router connection by Ethernet at both ends when the room layout allows it, and confirm that the television or receiver has the required Ethernet port or a compatible network adapter.
Wiring only the TV while leaving the computer on an unreliable connection does not follow Valve’s recommendation. Likewise, a powerful television cannot compensate for an unstable path between the host and receiver.
3. Confirm controller support
Valve says the Android app can pair with a Bluetooth controller or Steam Controller. Check the controller’s Bluetooth support, charging method and compatibility with the selected TV or receiver. Some setups may also accept a wired controller through USB, but the available ports and supported input devices differ by model; verify them before purchase.
4. Treat display specifications as separate TV decisions
Resolution, screen size, brightness, contrast, viewing angle, HDR support and general gaming features determine whether you like the television as a display. They do not establish that Steam Link itself will perform better. The available evidence does not provide controlled latency measurements, rankings of current TV models or proof that a particular panel improves a streamed game.

A high-refresh display can still be valuable for other sources, such as a directly connected gaming PC or console. For Steam Link, first secure app compatibility and a sound network; then choose the picture characteristics that suit your room and viewing distance.
Host-computer and network requirements
Keep the computer that owns the Steam library powered on, signed in to Steam and able to run the game. Steam Link is an extension of Steam Remote Play: the computer performs the game processing while the receiver handles the streamed image, sound and input connection.
- Install and update Steam on the host computer.
- Install Steam Link on the compatible TV or external receiver.
- Connect the host and receiver to the same home network unless your particular Remote Play arrangement supports another route.
- Use Ethernet for the host and Android TV receiver when practical, following Valve’s best-performance guidance.
- Keep the host computer awake and available during play; sleep or shutdown prevents a session from starting.
Steam Link setup on a compatible TV
- Check the TV’s app store. On an Android TV or Fire TV television, open the built-in app store and search for “Steam Link.” If it is not listed, stop and verify the exact model and region before buying accessories or expecting a native installation.
- Install Steam Link. Download the official app to the television or receiver and allow it to complete any first-run update.
- Prepare the host. Start the computer running Steam, sign in to the account containing the game and leave Steam open.
- Connect the receiver to the network. Use Ethernet for both the host and Android TV receiver when possible. If you are using an external box, connect it to the router according to that device’s available networking options.
- Launch Steam Link. The app searches for computers running Steam. Select the intended host when it appears.
- Complete the pairing code. Steam Link displays a code that you enter on the host computer. Follow the on-screen prompts rather than pairing with an unknown computer.
- Pair the controller. Put a Bluetooth controller or Steam Controller into pairing mode, then add it through the receiver’s Bluetooth settings or Steam Link’s controller setup. Confirm that button presses are recognized before launching a game.
- Run the connection test. Let Steam Link check the route between the receiver and host. If it reports a network problem, correct the wiring or router position before changing picture settings.
- Start a game from the Steam Link library. The game runs on the host computer and its video and audio appear on the TV. Keep the host awake for the duration of the session.
What to do when the app is missing
First, check for a model-specific software update and search the television’s regional app store again. If Steam Link remains unavailable, do not sideload an unverified package or assume that another TV in the same product family behaves identically. Use a supported Android TV or Fire TV streaming device connected by HDMI, and verify that receiver’s exact app listing before purchase.

Common problems and practical fixes
The host computer is not found
- Confirm that Steam is open and signed in on the computer.
- Check that the host and receiver are connected to the same router or home network.
- Prefer Ethernet on both ends, as recommended by Valve for Android TV performance.
- Restart Steam Link and Steam after correcting the network connection.
The controller pairs but does not control the game
- Check that the controller is paired with the receiver rather than another nearby device.
- Reopen Steam Link’s controller setup and verify that button presses register.
- Disconnect competing Bluetooth devices temporarily if the receiver is selecting the wrong input.
- Test the controller in the Steam interface before launching the game.
Video or audio is unstable
- Inspect Ethernet cables and switch ports if either side is wired.
- Move the receiver away from sources of interference when a wireless connection is unavoidable.
- Close other high-bandwidth activity on the home network while testing.
- Use Steam Link’s connection test to identify whether the host, network or receiver is reporting the problem.
The picture looks good but input feels delayed
Do not infer that a premium panel has solved streaming latency. Check the network path first, then the host computer’s load and the receiver’s connection. The cited Valve materials do not establish a universal latency number or a TV model that eliminates delay, so any improvement must be judged on your own setup rather than a specification-sheet promise.
Buying checklist
- Exact model: record the full model number, not just the operating-system family.
- Region: confirm that Steam Link appears in the app store for the country where the TV will be used.
- Receiver plan: if native support is missing, select a verified Android TV or Fire TV streaming device and budget for its HDMI connection and power supply.
- Ethernet: check for an Ethernet port on the TV or receiver and plan a wired connection for the host computer where practical.
- Controller: confirm Bluetooth or supported USB connectivity for the controller you intend to use.
- Host PC: ensure the computer can run the game, remains awake and has Steam installed.
- Display fit: choose size, resolution, brightness and contrast for your room independently of Steam Link compatibility.
- Updates: check the TV or receiver’s software-update policy so app support is not based on an obsolete listing.
What “best” can and cannot mean here
There is no evidence-supported ranking of current television models for Steam Link in the available official material. No controlled comparison establishes a winning panel, a universal frame rate, a latency advantage or a current price-to-performance leader. Naming a single model as the best would overstate what has been verified.
A defensible recommendation is instead conditional: choose an Android TV or Fire TV television with Steam Link confirmed for the exact model and region, or keep an existing display and add a supported external receiver. Give the network and host computer equal attention, because those components carry the game stream. Then select the display whose size and picture characteristics fit your room and other gaming sources.
