The best TV sync box depends on what you watch and how it reaches the television. An HDMI box is the right fit when your consoles, streaming sticks, or set-top box run through HDMI; it cannot see apps running directly on a smart TV. For native apps and broadcast channels, choose a camera-based screen-sync kit instead. Then match HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, resolution, refresh rate, HDR support, lighting ecosystem, included hardware, and TV-size variant before comparing prices.
What a TV sync box actually does
A sync box analyzes the video signal and translates colors at the edges of the picture into commands for compatible ambient lights. The effect is an expanding glow behind the television that follows scenes, menus, and games. The important distinction is where the video signal is captured.

HDMI pass-through boxes
An HDMI model sits between source devices and the TV. You connect consoles, streaming sticks, disc players, or a set-top box to the sync box, then connect the box’s output to the television. The box reads only those HDMI signals. Philips Hue’s official FAQ lists set-top boxes, consoles, and streaming sticks as supported examples, with the box sending lighting data to a Hue Bridge and the Bridge controlling color-capable lights in an Entertainment area (Philips Hue HDMI sync box 8K).
This architecture preserves the TV’s own picture processing because the video continues over HDMI, but it creates a hard limitation: an app launched on the TV itself never travels through the box. Netflix, YouTube, or another native smart-TV app therefore will not trigger an HDMI sync box unless the same service is played from an external HDMI device.

Camera-based screen sync
A camera-based kit mounts above the television and reads the image on the screen. Signify’s Philips Smart Lighting Screen Sync is designed to work with native TV apps, broadcast television, and HDMI sources, so it suits households that switch between the TV’s built-in software and external devices (Signify’s September 10, 2026 announcement). The trade-off is a visible camera mounted above the set and a setup that must be sized and positioned for the display.
Quick comparison of the main options

These are capability and compatibility comparisons from manufacturer material, not an independently tested ranking. A product can be the right choice for one signal path and the wrong one for another.
Choose by your content sources first
If every source connects by HDMI
An HDMI box is usually the simplest route. Draw a list of every device that produces video: game consoles, streaming sticks, cable or satellite receivers, disc players, and an AV receiver. Count how many need direct connections. The Hue 8K box accepts up to four HDMI devices directly; Philips says a splitter or AV receiver can expand the number of sources, but every extra device must still preserve the video formats you intend to use (Hue 8K specifications).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you use the TV’s built-in apps
Use a camera-based screen-sync product, or move the apps to an external streaming device connected to an HDMI box. The first approach covers native apps and broadcast without changing your habits. The second avoids a camera but adds an external device and another HDMI input to your signal chain.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
If you mix HDMI and native sources
Screen Sync is the only option in the comparison explicitly designed to read both categories from the same television. An HDMI-only box will sync the external inputs and remain dark when you switch to an unsupported native app.
Check gaming resolution and refresh rate before buying
For games, resolution and refresh rate are separate requirements. A box advertised as “8K” may still limit a 4K/120Hz console path, while a model that supports 4K/144Hz may be unnecessary if your display and games top out at 4K/60Hz.
| Gaming requirement | Published match in the compared products | What to verify in your setup |
|---|---|---|
| 8K at 60Hz | Hue 8K, Govee AI Sync Box Kit 2, and Philips Smart Lighting HDMI 2.1 Sync Box with Strip Light list this capability | Console or PC output, TV input, HDMI cables, and any receiver or switch must all support the same mode |
| 4K at 120Hz | Hue 8K and Philips Smart Lighting HDMI 2.1 Sync Box with Strip Light list this capability | Use an HDMI 2.1 path end to end; check that the TV’s specific port supports 120Hz |
| 4K at 144Hz | Govee’s official AI Sync Box Kit 2 listing states up to 4K/144Hz | Confirm the exact product listing and whether your PC, TV, cable, and chosen input support 144Hz |
| 4K at 60Hz | Hue 4K lists up to 4K/60Hz | Check HDR and Dolby Vision support for the source and display, not just the refresh rate |
| 1440p at 120Hz | Hue 4K lists up to 1440p/120Hz | Confirm that the TV accepts 1440p at 120Hz; some displays expose different modes by input |
Do not assume that a box’s maximum number applies automatically to every port or cable. HDMI generation, chroma settings, HDR format, variable-refresh features, and an AV receiver can change the negotiated mode. Connect the highest-bandwidth source to the box, then verify the signal information page on the TV or console.

Understand the lighting ecosystem and what is in the box
Philips Hue system
The Hue HDMI boxes send lighting commands to a Hue Bridge, which then controls compatible color lights assigned to an Entertainment area. The sync box itself is not a complete ambient-light installation. Budget for the Bridge and the lights if you do not already own them. The Hue 8K model supports up to ten Philips Hue color-capable lights according to Signify’s 2024 announcement (Signify, September 5, 2024).

Philips Smart Lighting and WiZ
Signify describes Philips Smart Lighting as a separate proposition powered by the WiZ platform and controlled in the WiZ app. Its Screen Sync and HDMI 2.1 products should therefore be treated as distinct from Philips Hue when you plan compatibility, controls, or future expansion (Signify product announcement).
Kit versus box-only purchase
Signify says Screen Sync is sold as a kit with the capture device and strip light included. The HDMI 2.1 product is also listed as a sync box with strip light. By contrast, a Hue box listing does not mean that a Bridge, strip, or other lights are included. Read the package-contents section before comparing a lower box-only price with a complete kit.
Match the TV’s diagonal size
Measure the screen diagonally, from one corner of the visible panel to the opposite corner, rather than using the television’s marketing series name. The 2026 Philips Smart Lighting Screen Sync variants cover 40–50, 55–65, and 75–85-inch televisions. Its HDMI 2.1 Sync Box with Strip Light is listed for 55–65 and 75–85-inch sets (Signify, September 10, 2026).
- Choose the 40–50-inch Screen Sync variant for a television within that range.
- Choose the 55–65-inch variant for a mid-size set; do not stretch a shorter strip around a larger panel.
- Choose the 75–85-inch variant for a large display and verify that you have enough clearance behind the set for the strip and cable routing.
- For the Philips Smart Lighting HDMI 2.1 kit, select 55–65 or 75–85 inches; no 40–50-inch variant is listed in the cited announcement.
Current published prices and how to compare total cost
Prices change by country, retailer, promotion, and bundle. The following US figures are snapshots, not permanent prices: Philips Hue’s US pages showed $384.99 for the 8K box and $149.99 for the 4K box when checked October 13, 2026 (8K product page; 4K product page).

Govee’s official AI Sync Box Kit 2 listing states the video formats but the cited listing should be checked for the current price and exact package contents before purchase (Govee AI Sync Box Kit 2). For any option, calculate the complete system cost: box or camera, strip or separate lights, bridge, mounting hardware, and any HDMI cables or switch needed to preserve your target format.
Step-by-step setup for an HDMI sync box
- Confirm the signal plan. Write down each HDMI source, the TV input you want to use, and the highest resolution, refresh rate, and HDR mode required.
- Place the box in the chain. Connect each source to an HDMI input on the sync box. Connect the box’s HDMI output to the TV’s compatible input. If you use an AV receiver or splitter, place it where the manufacturer’s diagram supports it and verify that it passes your target format.
- Use suitable cables. For 4K/120Hz, 8K/60Hz, or 4K/144Hz claims, use cables rated for the relevant HDMI bandwidth and keep the chain as simple as practical.
- Connect the lighting controller. For Hue, connect the box to the Hue Bridge and assign the intended color lights to an Entertainment area. For a Philips Smart Lighting/WiZ kit, follow the WiZ app’s pairing flow.
- Enable synchronization. Select the HDMI input and start sync in the appropriate app. Set intensity and response behavior conservatively first; increase brightness after confirming that colors track correctly.
- Verify every source. Test a console game, a streaming device, and HDR content if you use them. Switch inputs while watching the TV’s signal-information screen to ensure the box has not forced a lower mode.
Camera-based setup and placement checks
- Choose the correct size kit. Match the strip variant to the TV’s diagonal range before opening the package.
- Mount the camera above the panel. Center it so the entire visible screen is in view. Avoid a soundbar, cabinet, or bezel that blocks the lower edge of the image.
- Attach the strip. Follow the kit’s corner and cable-routing instructions, leaving enough slack to avoid pulling the strip away from the panel.
- Calibrate the screen area. Use the app’s on-screen alignment process and repeat it if the camera or television moves.
- Test all content types. Open a native app, switch to broadcast television, and then test an HDMI source. A successful camera system should respond to each because it reads the displayed image rather than the input cable.
Common problems and fixes
The lights stay dark on a native app
This is expected with an HDMI-only box: the app’s video never passes through its inputs. Use an external HDMI streaming device or switch to a camera-based screen-sync kit.
The TV drops from 4K/120Hz to 4K/60Hz
- Check that the box model, TV port, source, and every cable support 4K/120Hz.
- Bypass an older AV receiver or splitter temporarily to isolate the limiting component.
- Turn on the TV’s enhanced or high-bandwidth HDMI mode if its settings require it.
- Reconnect one source at a time and inspect the TV’s reported signal mode after each change.
HDR or Dolby Vision does not engage
Confirm support across the source, box, TV, and receiver. The Hue 8K and 4K documentation lists Dolby Vision and HDR10+, but a format can still fail when another device in the chain does not pass it. Test with a known HDR title and check the TV’s picture-information panel.

Only some lights respond
Verify that every lamp is color-capable, powered, paired to the correct bridge or app, and assigned to the intended entertainment or sync area. Remove duplicate rooms or groups that could be receiving conflicting commands.
The camera sync looks misaligned
Recalibrate after moving the TV, camera, or strip. Reduce reflections from windows and glossy furniture, ensure the lens is clean, and check that the camera sees the full active picture rather than a cropped or obstructed region.
A practical buying checklist
- Sources: Are all important pictures HDMI-connected, or do you need native-app and broadcast support?
- Gaming mode: Is your target 4K/60Hz, 4K/120Hz, 4K/144Hz, or 8K/60Hz?
- HDR: Do you require Dolby Vision, HDR10+, or another specific format?
- Inputs: How many devices need direct connections, and will an AV receiver or splitter be in the chain?
- Ecosystem: Do you already own a Hue Bridge and color lights, or are you starting with a WiZ-based kit and strip?
- TV size: Which diagonal range contains your actual screen?
- Package contents: Does the price include a strip, bridge, camera, controller, and power supply?
- Total cost: Are the displayed prices current for your country and the exact generation?
- Placement: Can you mount a camera above the screen or route a strip behind the panel cleanly?
Which type should you buy?
Choose an HDMI box when
Your content comes from consoles, streaming sticks, or receivers; you want no camera above the TV; and the box’s HDMI bandwidth matches your display. The Hue 8K is specified for 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz, while the Hue 4K is aimed at up to 4K/60Hz or 1440p/120Hz. Govee’s listing claims 4K/144Hz as well as 8K/60Hz, which may matter to a PC gamer, but verify the live listing and package details.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose a camera-based kit when
You regularly use native smart-TV apps or broadcast channels and want those pictures synchronized without moving them to an external device. Screen Sync’s 40–50, 55–65, and 75–85-inch variants are designed around that use case.
Choose by ecosystem when
You already own compatible lights and a controller. Staying within that ecosystem can avoid replacing lamps or adding another app, but do not assume Philips Hue and Philips Smart Lighting/WiZ components are interchangeable: Signify presents them as separate product lines.
No independent side-by-side test establishes one universal winner. The defensible choice is the model that captures your actual sources, preserves the video mode your TV and games require, includes the hardware you need, and fits your lighting ecosystem and screen size.
