There is no single best service for every viewer. The right choice depends on your country, the exact series or episode, your device, and the plan you pay for. Netflix has the clearest documented support across Android, iPhone, iPad, Chromebook and Fire tablet apps; Apple TV is a strong fit for downloads on iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC or Apple Vision Pro; Disney+ supports offline viewing on eligible mobile plans. In every case, verify the specific title before subscribing or travelling.
What “TV show download sites” should mean
For legal viewing, a download site is usually a streaming service whose app stores an encrypted copy for offline playback, or a store where you authorize a purchase and download it through the provider’s app. It does not normally give you an unrestricted video file that can be copied anywhere.

Download rights are negotiated title by title. A program can be available to stream while its licensing terms do not allow an offline copy. Downloads can also be limited by plan, device, operating-system version, country, number of devices, or a time window. Treat the download as a permission to watch in the provider’s app, not as permanent ownership.

This is a conditional comparison, not a global ranking. Catalogs, licensing, plan names and device support change by market. Prime Video and other services are often discussed for offline viewing, but current official conditions were not established here, so you should not rely on an assumed device list, expiry period or download limit.

How to choose the best service for your exact show
1. Search for the episode, not just the service
Open the provider’s app while signed in to the account and search for the exact season and episode. Look for a download icon on the episode or a download option on the season page. Check more than one episode if the series is important: rights can differ between seasons, specials and regional versions.
Netflix explains that it tries to make as many movies and shows available for download as possible, but some titles are excluded because of exclusive rights, rights that are not available for purchase, popularity, cost, seasonal conditions, localized factors or other availability rules. Streaming availability therefore does not guarantee download availability.
2. Confirm the country or region
Licensing is territorial. A title downloadable in one country may stream only, disappear, or be absent entirely in another. Apple states that Apple TV availability varies by country or region, and Disney+ applies regional plan rules. Check the support page and in-app listing for the country where you will actually watch, especially before an international trip.
3. Match the service to your device
Download support is app-specific. A television may run the streaming app but still offer no local-download feature. Apple explicitly excludes Apple TV hardware, smart TVs, streaming devices and tv.apple.com from Apple TV app downloads. Netflix’s Windows app likewise does not provide downloads, even though Netflix can be streamed there.
4. Check the plan before paying
Disney+ states that plan eligibility applies to offline downloads. Other providers can attach limits to a plan, title, device count or simultaneous downloads. Read the current plan description for your market and confirm that “download” means offline viewing, not merely streaming to a phone.

Netflix: the broadest documented device coverage
Netflix says its service and other providers’ shows and movies can be downloaded in the Android, iPhone, iPad, Google Chromebook and Amazon Fire apps. That makes it the clearest starting point when your household mixes mobile platforms, provided your exact title has a download license.
Supported devices and operating systems
- Android phones and tablets are listed as download devices.
- iPhone and iPad are listed as download devices.
- Amazon Fire tablets are supported when they run Fire OS 7 or later.
- Chromebooks with the Google Play Store are listed as supported.
- Netflix downloads are unavailable on Windows devices.
These are Netflix-specific rules. Do not assume that another service supports the same hardware or operating-system versions.
Why a downloadable button may be missing
A missing button does not necessarily indicate an app error. Netflix lists exclusive licensing, rights not available for purchase, popularity, cost, seasonal or localized factors and other availability restrictions. A show can remain streamable while its rights do not permit downloads. If one episode lacks the icon, check another season or special, then verify the title’s availability in your current country.
Fire tablet check
Before buying or travelling with a Fire tablet, confirm the exact model and that it runs Fire OS 7 or later. Update the operating system, install the current Netflix app from the supported app store, sign in, and test one episode while you still have a reliable connection. A category label such as “Fire tablet” is not enough to prove compatibility.
Apple TV: excellent for Apple personal devices, not televisions
Apple Support says the Apple TV app can download shows on iPhone or iPad and on Mac or PC. Apple also provides download instructions for Apple Vision Pro. The feature belongs to supported personal-device apps, not to every screen that carries the Apple TV name.

Where they do not work
Apple states: “You can’t download content from the Apple TV app on Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, smart TVs, streaming devices, and on tv.apple.com.” If your plan is to watch on a television during a flight or in a hotel, download to a supported personal device first and connect that device only if the destination setup allows it.
Expiry and device limits
Most Apple TV channel downloads remain available for up to 30 days, although some expire sooner. For some Apple TV subscription titles, playback access ends 48 hours after you start watching or 30 days after downloading, whichever comes first. Limits on the number of simultaneously downloaded titles or devices can also apply. The app should show an expiry warning or remove the item when the permission ends, so download close enough to your trip to avoid wasting the viewing window.
Purchases are not an absolute permanence guarantee
Apple’s media-services terms say downloaded content may be limited or expire and that some content may not be available for download. Purchased content is generally available for download or redownload, but Apple warns that a purchase can become unavailable if it loses distribution rights. A purchase is an authorized library entitlement, not a guarantee that every title will remain downloadable forever.
Disney+: confirm plan eligibility and quality settings
Disney+ Help says supported mobile devices can download content for offline viewing and that eligibility depends on the plan. It also describes choices for download quality. Because device lists and plan conditions can vary by country, use the current regional Disney+ help page and account-plan details rather than an old compatibility list.
Choose quality around your storage and trip
Higher quality uses more storage and may take longer to download. Lower quality can be practical for a phone with limited free space or a long queue of episodes. Download a short episode first, check the resulting storage use and playback quality, then select a setting for the rest of the season. Keep enough free space for the app to complete downloads and update its license data.

Verify the plan before travelling
A subscription that streams on your television is not automatically a plan that permits mobile downloads. Open the account’s plan information, confirm that offline downloads are included in your country, and test the feature on the device you will carry.
Subscription downloads versus authorized purchases
Subscription download
A subscription download is tied to an active account, the provider’s app and the service’s current rights. The download may stop working when the subscription ends, when a license window closes, or after an expiry period. It is convenient for a trip but should not be treated as a permanent archive.
Authorized digital purchase
A purchase can offer stronger long-term access than a rental or subscription download, but it still depends on the seller’s distribution rights and app ecosystem. Apple’s terms specifically reserve the possibility that purchased content may later be removed if distribution rights change. Keep your account secure and retain any purchase records, but do not promise yourself perpetual access.
Physical media
DVD and Blu-ray season sets can provide a durable offline alternative because playback does not depend on a streaming catalog or download expiry. Availability varies by title and market, and a disc still requires a compatible drive or player. Consider physical media when a series is essential and recurring licensing changes would be disruptive.

A pre-trip download checklist
- Confirm the market. Check the catalog and plan rules for the country where you will watch.
- Confirm the exact episodes. Open the season in the app and verify that each required episode has a download option.
- Confirm the device. Use a supported personal device and check the operating-system requirement. For Netflix on Fire tablets, that means Fire OS 7 or later; Windows Netflix downloads are not available.
- Update the app and system. Install pending updates while online so the download feature and license checks are current.
- Check storage. Delete unused downloads, choose an appropriate quality setting and leave headroom for the app.
- Download on reliable Wi-Fi. Wait for every episode to finish and verify it appears in the app’s Downloads area.
- Test offline playback. Turn on airplane mode or temporarily disable Wi-Fi and start one downloaded episode before leaving.
- Record expiry information. Note any “available until” message and start playback early enough to stay inside the permitted window.
- Keep the account usable. Remain signed in, remember the account credentials and avoid clearing app data, which can remove local downloads.
Troubleshooting missing or unusable downloads
The title streams but has no download icon
Check another episode, season or special, then confirm your country and plan. The most likely explanation is a rights restriction rather than a network failure. Netflix specifically documents this difference between streaming and download rights.

The app says the device is unsupported
Check the provider’s current device list and operating-system version. For Netflix, verify Fire OS 7 or later on Fire tablets and remember that the Windows app does not support downloads. For Apple TV, move the download to an iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC or Apple Vision Pro; Apple TV hardware, smart TVs and streaming devices are excluded.
The download disappears or will not play offline
Look for an expiry notice, a plan change, a sign-in prompt or a title-rights change. Connect briefly to the internet, open the provider app and let it refresh authorization. If the subscription has ended or the title has left the service, downloading it again will not restore access.
There is not enough storage
Remove watched downloads, lower the quality setting where the service allows it, and download only the episodes needed for the trip. Do not begin a large queue until the first file has completed and played offline successfully.

Decision guide: which pick fits you?
- Choose Netflix first when you need documented support across Android, iPhone, iPad, Chromebook and Fire tablet apps, and your exact series is downloadable.
- Choose Apple TV when your viewing device is an iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC or Apple Vision Pro and you accept the stated expiry rules. It is not the right solution if you expect to download directly to a television or streaming box.
- Choose Disney+ when the current plan in your country includes downloads and you mainly watch on a supported mobile device. Select quality with your storage and trip length in mind.
- Use an authorized purchase or physical copy when long-term access matters more than a rotating subscription catalog, while remembering that digital purchase access can still be affected by distribution rights.
The practical answer to “What streaming service has the best offline viewing experience?” is therefore conditional: start with the service that offers your exact show, on your exact device, under your exact plan and region. A service with more titles is not better if the episode you need cannot be downloaded or expires before you watch it.
