Use your television’s Game Mode, Game Optimizer or equivalent low-latency picture mode first. Then enable Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) wherever both the console and the specific TV input support it. ALLM lets the console tell the television to switch into its low-latency mode automatically. Treat VRR as optional: it synchronizes refresh timing on compatible hardware, but no official GTA 6 source yet confirms the game’s VRR behavior, frame-rate modes or a measured input-lag benefit.
Rockstar Games announced that Grand Theft Auto VI is coming on November 19, 2026, to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The settings below prepare a compatible display for that launch without promising a GTA 6-specific latency figure that has not been published.

What to change first
Input lag is the delay between a controller command and the corresponding image change. A television can add delay when it applies picture processing intended for films, broadcasts or image enhancement. A low-latency picture preset reduces that processing path. The exact label and menu location depend on the TV model, region and firmware, so use the model’s manual rather than assuming that an HDMI 2.1 socket has every gaming feature.

| ALLM | The TV, HDMI input and console all support it | Allows the console to request the TV’s low-latency mode automatically | HDMI 2.1 branding alone does not prove ALLM support. |
| Manual Game Mode | ALLM is unavailable, unreliable or not offered by the TV | Keeps the TV in its low-latency mode without automatic switching | You may need to return to a normal picture mode for movies or television. |
| VRR | The display, console output and game support compatible VRR operation | Synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with console output | Official GTA 6 VRR support and performance details have not been announced. |
| Supplied or compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable | The current cable cannot provide the required signal or feature | Maintains the connection needed by the console and TV | A cable replacement by itself has not been shown to lower input lag on a working setup. |
The practical order is therefore: select the TV’s gaming preset, verify the correct HDMI input, enable automatic low-latency switching if supported, and consider VRR only after confirming compatibility. There is no evidence-based reason to chase a particular number of milliseconds for GTA 6; the cited official material contains no such measurement.

1. Verify the TV model and HDMI input
Read the manual for the exact port
Start with the television’s model number and manual. Look for the input that supports the console’s required video features and for menu entries named ALLM, Auto Low Latency Mode, Game Mode, Game Optimizer or similar. Sony’s support guidance notes that ALLM is available only on compatible televisions with HDMI 2.1, and that some manufacturers simply call the resulting low-latency state “Game Mode.”
Do not infer ALLM from the words “HDMI 2.1” printed beside a socket. Sony specifically cautions that HDMI 2.1 alone does not guarantee ALLM. A TV may have one high-bandwidth input and several ordinary inputs, or it may expose gaming features only on selected ports. Connect the console to the documented port and check that port’s individual settings.
Check the complete signal path
For the least ambiguous test, connect the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S directly to the television’s compatible HDMI input. If a receiver, switch or soundbar sits between the console and TV, that device must also pass the required gaming signals and automatic-mode information. When diagnosing an ALLM or VRR problem, temporarily removing intermediate equipment helps establish whether the TV and console can communicate directly.

2. Put the TV in its low-latency picture mode
Choose the gaming preset
With the console powered on and its HDMI input selected, open the TV’s picture menu and choose Game Mode, Game Optimizer or the manufacturer’s equivalent low-latency preset. Some sets apply the mode per input; others apply it globally or only after detecting a console signal. Confirm the mode while the console’s input is active, not while browsing a different source.

The preset is the essential manual fallback. If your TV has no ALLM support, or if automatic switching does not occur, leaving this mode enabled avoids relying on the TV to recognize gameplay. The trade-off is convenience: the television may remain in its gaming picture profile when you switch to a film or live television source, requiring a manual change back to your preferred cinema or standard mode.
Do not assume every “gaming” option has the same meaning
Menus can contain separate items for a gaming picture preset, a gaming dashboard and an automatic console setting. Read the on-screen description and manual. The relevant option is the one that places the display in its low-latency picture state; a dashboard that merely displays frame-rate information is not a substitute.

Picture quality can change in Game Mode because the TV is choosing a faster processing path. That is expected. Tune brightness, contrast and color only after the mode is active, so you do not accidentally switch back to a slower general-purpose profile while adjusting the image.
3. Enable ALLM when the setup supports it
How ALLM works
ALLM is a signaling feature: while playing, a compatible console sends a request that tells a compatible TV to use its low-latency mode. When gameplay ends, the TV can return to its previous picture behavior. Sony describes this feature on its PS5 features page. The TV may label the setting “Auto Low Latency,” “Auto Game Mode,” “Instant Game Response” or something else, so search the manual rather than looking for one universal phrase.
PS5: exact menu path
On PS5, open:
- Open Settings.
- Select Screen and Video.
- Choose Video Output.
- Select ALLM.
- Set it to the available automatic or on state if your compatible TV supports it.
Sony documents this path in its PS5 resolution and video-output guide. Sony says a compatible TV switches to low-latency mode while you play. If the ALLM option is missing or has no effect, verify the TV model, the selected HDMI port and the directness of the connection before assuming the console is defective.

Xbox Series X|S: use the TV’s documented automatic setting
Grand Theft Auto VI is also announced for Xbox Series X|S, but the cited detailed menu instructions are PS5-specific. Do not apply the PS5 menu path to Xbox. Instead, enable the TV’s ALLM or automatic game-mode setting on the documented HDMI input and consult the Xbox and television manuals for the corresponding console option. If the automatic change cannot be verified, select the TV’s Game Mode manually; that is the dependable fallback supported by the display itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfirm that switching actually happens
Some TVs show a brief “Game Mode” notification when the console starts an application or changes video output. Others expose the active picture mode in a quick menu. Check the active mode while a game is running, then check it again after returning to the console home screen. A persistent Game Mode is not necessarily a fault; it may mean the TV is configured to remain in the low-latency profile until you change it.
4. Understand what VRR can and cannot tell you
VRR is a synchronization feature, not a GTA 6 latency guarantee
Variable refresh rate synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh timing with the console’s output. Sony describes VRR as a feature for compatible displays and games and warns that results vary by display and game. Synchronization can help avoid visible tearing and may make uneven output feel smoother, but that is different from proving a lower controller-to-photon delay.
The official Rockstar announcement establishes platforms and the November 19, 2026 launch date, but it does not specify GTA 6 frame-rate targets, graphics modes, VRR support or input-lag measurements. Consequently, you cannot yet claim that enabling VRR will reduce input lag in GTA 6, or that a particular VRR range will apply at launch.
When to enable it
Enable VRR only when all three parts of the chain are compatible: the TV input, the console output and the game or application. Follow the TV’s manual for its VRR switch and range. If the picture becomes unstable, drops out, flickers or behaves differently in a particular title, disable VRR for troubleshooting and compare the result with the TV’s Game Mode still enabled.

On PS5, Sony notes that VRR output can cause the TV to switch into low-latency mode even when the PS5’s ALLM setting is Off. That behavior does not make VRR a substitute for ALLM, nor does it establish a GTA 6-specific advantage; it describes how the PS5 and a compatible display may interact.
5. Check the HDMI cable before buying anything
Use the PS5 cable first
Sony recommends using the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5. Its guidance says a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable supporting HDMI 2.1 should support ALLM. Therefore, start with the included cable and the correct TV input rather than replacing a cable simply because it is old or lacks a particular logo.
When a replacement is justified
Consider an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable only if the existing cable cannot carry the required signal, produces dropouts, prevents the expected video features from appearing, or is physically damaged. A replacement can restore compatibility in those cases. The available evidence does not show that swapping a fully working, compatible cable alone reduces input lag, so do not treat a cable purchase as a latency upgrade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. A platform-neutral setup procedure
Use this sequence for either supported console without assuming that menu names are identical:
- Identify the exact TV model and read which HDMI input supports the console’s gaming features.
- Connect the console directly to that input with the supplied cable or a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Open the TV picture menu while viewing the console and select Game Mode, Game Optimizer or the equivalent low-latency preset.
- In the TV’s HDMI, external-device or gaming settings, enable ALLM or automatic game-mode switching if the manual says the input supports it.
- On PS5, set ALLM through Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > ALLM. On Xbox Series X|S, use the Xbox and TV documentation for the corresponding setting instead of copying the PS5 path.
- Test the console home screen and a game, checking the TV’s active picture mode after each transition.
- Enable VRR only after confirming that the display and output support it, then test for stable behavior in the application you are playing.
This order separates basic low-latency configuration from optional synchronization. If something fails, you know which change introduced it.

7. Troubleshooting common failures
The TV never changes to Game Mode
- Confirm that the console is connected to the HDMI input named in the TV manual.
- Check whether the TV requires ALLM to be enabled separately from the general Game Mode preset.
- On PS5, verify the documented ALLM path and make sure the setting is not unavailable because the display is incompatible.
- Remove an HDMI switch, receiver or soundbar temporarily and test a direct connection.
- If automatic switching remains unavailable, leave Game Mode enabled manually for that input.
The ALLM option is missing
A missing option can be normal when the TV, input or connection does not support it. HDMI 2.1 labeling is not sufficient evidence. Check the model manual and firmware notes, then use manual Game Mode if the hardware does not provide ALLM. Do not infer a fault from the absence of a menu item that the model never promised.
VRR causes instability
Turn VRR off temporarily while keeping Game Mode on. If the image stabilizes, the issue is associated with the VRR combination rather than the basic low-latency preset. Check the TV’s documented VRR range and the console’s output settings, and retest with a direct HDMI connection. Because GTA 6’s VRR implementation has not been documented in the cited announcement, wait for title-specific information before treating a VRR problem as a game defect.
The picture looks different or less cinematic
That is a normal trade-off of a faster picture profile. Keep the gaming preset for play, and switch to your preferred non-gaming profile for films or television. The choice is about processing behavior, not a promise that every TV will look identical or deliver a published millisecond reduction.

What is confirmed about GTA 6, and what is not
Rockstar’s August 6, 2026 announcement says: “Grand Theft Auto VI is coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X|S.” That is the confirmed platform and timing information relevant to this setup. The announcement does not state a launch frame rate, graphics-mode split, VRR implementation or measured input-lag result.
Those omissions matter when choosing settings. Game Mode and compatible ALLM are display-and-console features you can prepare now. VRR behavior, the best output mode and any title-specific latency characteristics depend on the final game, console output and TV combination. Recheck the game’s published requirements and your TV manual when GTA 6 launches rather than assuming that a setting validated for another title will behave identically.
Recommended decision rule
If your TV and console support automatic switching, use Game Mode plus ALLM. If ALLM is unavailable or unreliable, use Game Mode manually on the console’s HDMI input. Add VRR only when the display, console output and game support it and the result is stable. Keep the supplied or correctly specified HDMI cable, replacing it only to solve a demonstrated compatibility problem. This approach minimizes avoidable television processing without inventing a GTA 6 performance claim that official sources have not made.
