Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For most live sports, start in Sports or Standard picture mode and set the television’s motion control to Clear, Standard, or the lowest custom setting that keeps the ball, puck, and players distinct during a camera pan. Raise smoothing only when motion still looks blurry; lower it as soon as you see halos, double edges, shimmering lines, or a processed “soap-opera” look.
There is no universal number because manufacturers expose different controls, ranges, and processing rules. The incoming feed, app or set-top box, refresh-rate mode, and whether Game Mode or VRR is active can change which options appear and how they look.

What the motion controls change
A live broadcast delivers a sequence of frames. Your TV must display those frames quickly enough that movement looks continuous, while the panel’s response time, the broadcast frame rate, and the TV’s processing determine how sharp moving objects appear.
Motion processing usually combines two jobs:
- Frame interpolation or smoothing: the TV analyzes neighboring frames and creates intermediate frames. This can make camera pans and player movement look more fluid, but errors can produce halos, warped objects, or duplicate edges.
- Blur reduction or backlight scanning: the TV changes how each frame is shown to reduce perceived persistence blur. It can improve clarity, but may reduce brightness, introduce flicker, or behave differently with certain sources.
Brands divide these jobs into different controls. A setting called Smoothness, De-judder, or Motion Smoothing generally affects interpolation. Blur Reduction, LED Motion Clarity, or a similar control targets motion sharpness. The labels and available ranges are model-dependent.

Best starting setup for a live game
- Play the real feed you watch. Use the live football, hockey, basketball, or soccer channel, or the streaming app you normally use. A movie clip cannot reveal the same problems as a fast sports broadcast.
- Open the picture menu. On most sets this is under Settings, Picture, or Picture mode. Choose Sports if it looks balanced. If Sports mode is excessively bright or saturated, choose Standard; Movie or Cinema can also be a better base when you prefer a less aggressive image.
- Locate the motion menu. Search for Motion, Motion Enhancement, Motion Clarity, or an Advanced picture submenu. Sony calls its system Motionflow. Hisense documentation refers to Auto Motion Plus, MotionFlow, and TruMotion. Roku TV models may show Action Smoothing, Action Clarity, or LED Motion Clarity. Philips models can list Motion styles, Smoothness, Blur reduction, and Sports optimisation.
- Choose a restrained preset first. Select Clear or Standard where offered. If the menu uses a slider, begin at a low value rather than at Maximum. This establishes a clean baseline before you add processing.
- Watch a wide camera pan. Look at the ball or puck, the players’ outlines, advertising boards, and thin lines on the field or rink. Increase blur reduction or smoothing one step at a time only if moving objects remain indistinct.
- Stop at the lowest clean setting. The best setting is not the strongest setting. Once the object is readable without obvious artifacts, further processing usually adds risk without useful detail.
- Check close-ups and replays. A value that looks good for a long pan can create distortions around a player’s head, stick, net, or the scoreboard during a replay. Keep the setting if those errors are minor; otherwise reduce Smoothness or De-judder.
- Save it for that input. If the television supports per-input picture settings, store the sports profile separately for the cable box, built-in app, or streaming device you use. A console input should have its own profile.
How the major labels map to sports viewing
| Television platform or brand terminology | Where to look | Practical sports starting point | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony | Motionflow in Picture settings | Use the least aggressive Clear, Standard, or low custom option available. | Sony states that picture options depend on the TV model, so a specific numeric value cannot be applied to every set. |
| Hisense | Auto Motion Plus; some documentation also references MotionFlow or TruMotion | Hisense’s sports guidance recommends Clear or Standard where available. | Menu names and controls vary by model and source. |
| Roku TV | Action Smoothing, Action Clarity, or LED Motion Clarity | Start with the lowest setting that resolves blur, then inspect for artifacts. | Roku says these controls are not supported on every third-party Roku TV. |
| Philips | Motion styles, Smoothness, Blur reduction, and, on some models, Sports optimisation | Keep Smoothness low and add Blur reduction only as needed. | Philips manuals describe 0–10 ranges on supported models, but availability depends on model and source. |
| TCL Fire TV | Picture mode and Game Mode controls | For a sports feed, TCL advises Standard or Movie mode with Game Mode off so more motion processing can operate. | This advice is for the sports input; Game Mode remains useful on a separate console input. |
These names describe families of controls, not interchangeable numerical scales. A setting of 5 on one television may not perform like 5 on another.
Choose a setting by your viewing goal
| Goal | Starting choice | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Smoothest tracking of a fast game | Sports or Standard picture mode with Clear or moderate motion processing | Reduce the value if players develop halos, duplicate outlines, or warped limbs during pans. |
| A more natural, less processed image | Standard or Movie mode with motion set low or Off | Accept some motion blur if interpolation artifacts are more distracting than softness. |
| Console and sports on the same television | Use Game Mode for the console input and a separate sports profile | Game Mode can limit motion processing; do not judge the sports feed by the console profile. |
| Sports through VRR or an unusual source rate | Begin with the source’s normal picture mode and inspect which controls remain | Some motion options disappear or behave differently with variable-refresh or high-frame-rate input. |
Fix a blurry sports picture
When the ball or puck leaves a soft trail
First confirm that the softness occurs on the actual broadcast rather than only in a menu preview. Increase Blur reduction or the lowest motion preset by one step, then watch another pan. If the image becomes sharper but the player’s outline starts to shimmer, back down one step. Blur reduction and interpolation are separate on some Philips models, so you may be able to increase blur reduction without adding much Smoothness.
When the entire picture looks soft
Check the source path before adding processing. A cable box, streaming stick, or app may be outputting a different frame rate or resolution. TCL notes that many shows, sports broadcasts, and live-TV sources commonly use 30 or 60 frames per second, and two feeds can look different even when the TV menu values are identical. Confirm the device is not in a low-quality output mode, then retest the motion setting.

Fix choppy pans or uneven movement
When camera movement appears to jump
Try Clear or Standard rather than Off, provided your set offers those presets. If the motion remains uneven, compare the built-in app with the external box. A source device may be converting the broadcast to a different frame rate, or a receiver may be adding processing before the TV receives the signal.

When only one channel looks choppy
The channel or stream may have a different frame rate, compression level, or production workflow. Keep the TV setting that works for most of your viewing and adjust the source device only if its output mode is clearly different. Do not assume that a stronger smoothing value can restore detail that was never present in the feed.
Fix the “soap-opera” look and processing artifacts
Lower Smoothness or De-judder first
Interpolation is the usual cause of an unnaturally fluid appearance. Reduce Smoothness, De-judder, or the equivalent control before changing Blur reduction. A low value can preserve readable motion while avoiding the hyper-real look that some viewers dislike.
Watch for halos and duplicate players
Halos around a runner, a second edge around a hockey stick, shimmering netting, and a faint duplicate ball indicate that the algorithm is struggling to predict movement. Lower the motion value until those errors disappear. If they persist even at the lowest setting, turn interpolation off and use only a separate blur-reduction control if your model provides one.

Check thin lines and score graphics
Field markings, rink boards, goal nets, and scrolling score graphics reveal processing errors quickly. A setting that looks acceptable on a large player may still distort these high-contrast details. Use them as a final check before saving the profile.

Why your menu may not show the expected controls
Manufacturers do not expose one universal set of options. Sony says available picture choices depend on the TV model. Roku says Action Smoothing, Action Clarity, and LED Motion Clarity are not supported on every third-party Roku TV. Philips manuals note that motion styles can be unavailable with variable-refresh sources or high-frame-rate input, and that Sports optimisation is limited to specific models.
The signal path matters as well. An internal streaming app, HDMI cable box, AV receiver, and console can each trigger a different picture profile. Some sets also hide motion controls when Game Mode, PC mode, or VRR is enabled. If an option disappears:
- Switch temporarily to the source’s normal picture mode and check the menu again.
- Disable Game Mode only on the sports input if you need more processing.
- Test with VRR disabled when watching a conventional broadcast; re-enable it for compatible games.
- Try the television’s built-in app to determine whether the limitation comes from the external device.
Game Mode, VRR, and separate input profiles
Game Mode is designed to reduce input latency for interactive play. That goal can conflict with heavy frame interpolation, so a TV may limit or disable motion processing when Game Mode is active. TCL’s Fire TV guidance specifically recommends returning to Standard or Movie mode and turning Game Mode off for sports viewing.

Philips documentation identifies VRR and high-frame-rate input as cases where motion styles may be unavailable or altered.

Refresh rate: what the 100 Hz recommendation means
Hisense’s current sports guidance says that, when available, a refresh rate of 100 Hz or higher is desirable for ultra-fluid motion. This is a manufacturer recommendation, not a guarantee that every 100 Hz television will look better with every broadcast. The visible result still depends on the source frame rate, panel behavior, processing quality, and the setting you choose.
A higher panel refresh rate gives the television more opportunities to present motion, but it cannot create genuine broadcast detail that is missing from a compressed or low-frame-rate feed. Treat the number as a hardware suitability indicator, then judge the actual game using the test procedure above.
A repeatable five-minute tuning test
- Select a live sequence with a wide pan, such as a football play moving across the field or a hockey rush.
- Note the current picture mode and motion values so you can return to them.
- Compare Off, Clear, and Standard, or three adjacent custom values if your set uses sliders.
- Inspect the ball or puck, player edges, netting, field lines, and score graphics during the same type of movement.
- Choose the lowest setting that improves readability without visible halos, duplicate edges, shimmering, or an artificial look.
Repeat the test on a close-up and a replay. If one setting wins on pans but fails on replays, use the compromise that produces fewer distracting errors across the complete broadcast.

When turning motion processing off is the right choice
Off is a valid setting when you prefer the original broadcast cadence, when interpolation artifacts are obvious, or when the source already looks clean. You may see more sample-and-hold blur during fast movement, but the image can appear more natural and stable. Viewers who are sensitive to flicker should also be cautious with backlight-scanning options such as LED Motion Clarity; those features can trade blur reduction for reduced brightness or visible flicker on some models.

Practical recommendations by sport
Football and soccer
Large horizontal pans and small, fast-moving balls make these sports good tests of both blur and interpolation. Start with Clear or Standard, then inspect the ball against the grass and the players’ legs during a long pan. If the field lines shimmer, reduce Smoothness.
Hockey
The white ice, dark boards, thin sticks, and fast puck expose duplicate edges quickly. Use a restrained setting and check the goal net. If the puck remains difficult to follow but the net begins to warp, increase blur reduction rather than interpolation when those controls are separate.
Basketball
Rapid cuts between a wide court view and close-ups can make aggressive processing obvious. Check the ball during a full-court transition, then inspect faces and jerseys in a replay. A moderate setting may be preferable to the maximum preset.
