The best headphones for TV are the ones that connect to your television’s available audio output, stay in sync with the picture, and feel comfortable for the length of a show or film. For low-delay private listening, start with a dedicated TV headphone system and transmitter. Choose general Bluetooth headphones if you also want an everyday headset and your TV supports them reliably; use wired headphones when a compatible output is available.
Start with your TV’s audio output
Before choosing headphones, check the ports on the television and its audio settings. Dedicated TV systems commonly connect to an optical digital output or a 3.5 mm analog headphone output. Some TVs also provide stereo RCA outputs, which may work with wired headphones or a transmitter through a suitable adapter. The connection must match both the TV and the headphone system; an adapter does not make every combination compatible.

If you use optical audio, check the television’s digital audio format setting and the headphone maker’s requirements. Some systems need the TV to send PCM audio. You may have to change the output format in the TV’s sound menu for the transmitter to work. Crutchfield’s connection guide explains common TV headphone connections: how to connect wireless headphones to a TV.

| Connection | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated transmitter | Private TV listening, lower-delay video, or a shared setup with separate headphone volume | Whether the transmitter supports your TV’s optical or analog output, the required audio format, and the number of compatible headsets |
| TV Bluetooth | A general-purpose headset you also use with phones or other devices | Whether your television supports Bluetooth headphones and whether the TV/headphone combination stays acceptably in sync; simultaneous TV-speaker output varies |
| Wired 3.5 mm | A straightforward connection when you can sit near the TV | Whether the television has a 3.5 mm audio output and whether using it disables the TV speakers |
| Stereo RCA with an adapter | Wired headphones or a transmitter when the TV has RCA stereo output but no matching headphone socket | The exact TV output and the adapter or converter’s compatibility with the headphones or transmitter |
Dedicated TV systems: the strongest place to start for synchronized listening
A dedicated system pairs headphones with a transmitter that connects to the TV. These systems are designed for TV listening and can avoid some of the delay that may occur with Bluetooth, although performance still depends on the equipment and setup. They can also provide a charging dock, speech controls, or support for more than one listener.

Sennheiser RS 195 RF Wireless: personalized profiles
RTINGS names the Sennheiser RS 195 RF Wireless its best tested TV headphone in its 2026 guide. Its review describes a low-latency transmitter dock, optical and analog connections, personalized sound profiles, and virtual surround. RTINGS reports around 19 hours of battery life and more than eight hours for a full charge. It also notes that fit can affect bass: glasses or thick hair may reduce it, and some contact points may become sore over time. These are RTINGS’ test findings, not hands-on results from this article. The review publisher says it has tested more than 910 headphone pairs; that is its overall testing count, not a TV-headphone statistic. Read RTINGS’ TV headphone guide.
Sennheiser RS 175 RF Wireless: simpler controls and a second headset option
RTINGS describes the RS 175 as a less customizable transmitter-based alternative, with low-latency listening, bass and virtual-surround controls, and approximately 24 hours of playback. It does not have the RS 195’s personal sound profiles, and it cannot be used for wired listening when its battery is depleted; fit can affect bass. Crutchfield says it connects through optical or stereo 3.5 mm audio and that a second compatible headset can let two listeners set their volumes independently. Check the specific system’s supported headset arrangement before buying.

Dialogue-focused systems: useful adjustments, not hearing aids
If speech is hard to follow, look for a headset with a speech or clear-voice mode, volume normalization, personal profiles, or separate left and right levels. These features let you tailor TV sound; they are not medical treatment and should not be treated as a substitute for a hearing aid.
Avantree lists a Clear Voice mode, independent headphone volume, optical PCM and 3.5 mm inputs, and support for up to two receivers on the HT5009 Plus product page. The manufacturer claims latency under 68 ms, but says performance depends on the TV and connection method; Bluetooth from a smart TV may cause noticeable delay. Avantree explicitly says the product is not hearing-aid-level amplification or medical hearing support. Verify optical format compatibility and the connection you plan to use. See Avantree’s HT5009 Plus specifications.

Bluetooth headphones: flexible, but check sync and speaker behavior
Bluetooth can be convenient if your TV supports it and you want headphones that also serve for music, calls, or travel. It is not a uniform TV standard: compatible codecs and lip-sync behavior depend on the television and headset. Audio lag can make dialogue feel out of step with actors’ mouths. Try the pairing and a familiar video if possible, and check whether the TV can keep its built-in speakers active while headphones are connected; not every model permits both. TechRadar’s guide discusses Bluetooth and wired TV listening without implying that every TV behaves the same way: read its TV headphone guide.

Wired headphones avoid charging and wireless-sync questions. They are practical if the TV has a compatible 3.5 mm audio output and you can sit within cable reach. If the television has stereo RCA outputs instead, an appropriate adapter may be needed. Confirm the actual ports, whether the TV’s speakers remain active, and whether the cable length suits your seating position before relying on this option.

Compare comfort, charging, and shared listening
For long viewing sessions, comfort can matter as much as sound features. Check the fit around glasses and hair, pressure at the headband and earcups, battery life, charge time, and whether the transmitter dock also charges the headphones. RTINGS’ RS 195 review specifically reports that fit affects bass and that some contact points can become sore, illustrating why a feature list alone cannot establish all-day comfort.
For more than one viewer, distinguish between two different needs: keeping TV speakers on for someone else in the room, and connecting a second pair of headphones. Some transmitter systems support independent headphone volume while the TV speakers remain active; some accept multiple compatible receivers; Auracast can enable broadcast listening with compatible equipment. These capabilities are model-specific, so confirm exactly what the transmitter supports rather than assuming that any wireless headphones can join.
Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- Identify the TV’s available optical, 3.5 mm, RCA, or Bluetooth audio options.
- For optical connections, confirm the TV’s output format and whether PCM is required.
- Prioritize a dedicated transmitter if lip-sync delay would be distracting; assess Bluetooth with your actual TV/headset combination.
- Choose dialogue controls for sound tailoring, not as a replacement for hearing aids or medical care.
- Check comfort with glasses or hair, battery runtime, charging time, and dock design.
- If other people will listen too, confirm TV-speaker behavior, second-headset support, or Auracast compatibility.
- Check current regional model names, stock, and price with the seller; those details can change.
