There is no 36-inch television in the current mainstream manufacturer lineups reviewed for this guide. The practical alternatives are a 32-inch set for the smallest spaces, a 40-inch model when a little more width is available, or a 42- or 43-inch television if its exact exterior dimensions fit. Choose by measuring the cabinet or wall first, then compare the television’s published width, height, depth, stand footprint, resolution, smart platform and local warranty.
Is a 36-inch TV available today?
Searches for “best 36 inch TV” usually describe a space problem rather than a preference for that exact diagonal. Current mainstream size listings reviewed from several manufacturers do not show a 36-inch model. That is not proof that no 36-inch television exists anywhere in the world; specialist, clearance, regional or used-market products may still appear. It does mean that a buyer shopping current, supported mainstream models should plan around nearby sizes.

Roku’s current Select Series listing shows HD televisions at 24, 32 and 40 inches, while its Select Series 4K range begins at 43 inches. TCL UK groups compact televisions in the 32–39-inch category and describes 32–40-inch sets as suitable for smaller rooms. Panasonic’s United States lineup announcement dated August 18, 2026 names a 32-inch S65C. These are lineup examples, not a global inventory or a guarantee of stock in your country.

Nearby sizes at a glance
| Screen size | Evidence in current listings | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| 32 inches | Roku Select Series HD lists 32 inches; Panasonic’s August 18, 2026 U.S. announcement names a 32-inch S65C. | Very tight shelves, bedrooms, kitchens, offices and short viewing distances. |
| 40 inches | Roku Select Series HD lists 40 inches; TCL UK places 32–40-inch televisions in its compact-room guidance. | A larger picture when the cabinet can accept the extra width and depth. |
| 42 inches | TechRadar lists the LG OLED42C6 at 42 inches, 3840 × 2160, OLED and webOS 26. | Useful if the model’s exact body and stand dimensions clear the space. |
| 43 inches | Roku’s Select Series 4K range starts at 43 inches. | Worth considering when a 4K smart TV is required and the installation has enough clearance. |
Diagonal measurements describe the panel corner to corner, not the complete television. A 40-inch set from one product family can have a different bezel, stand spread, rear housing and cable clearance from another 40-inch set. Treat the table as a starting point, not a fit guarantee.
Best smaller fit: a 32-inch television
A 32-inch model is the closest mainstream choice when a nominal 36-inch screen would be too wide. It leaves more room for side bezels, a power cable and ventilation than a 40-inch set, and it is easier to place on a narrow dresser or shelf.
What the current evidence supports
Roku confirms a 32-inch size in its current Select Series HD lineup. The same lineup includes 24- and 40-inch versions, showing that the manufacturer treats 32 inches as a normal compact format rather than a special-order product. Panasonic’s U.S. announcement also identifies a 32-inch S65C, an additional example of current compact availability.
Do not turn those examples into a single universal “best” model. The exact SKU, panel resolution, dimensions, operating system version, tuner configuration, price and stock depend on the market and model year. Use “32-inch TV” as the search size, then open the manufacturer’s specification sheet for the model sold in your country.
When 32 inches is the better choice
- The maximum cabinet width is restrictive or the side walls leave little clearance.
- The main seating position is relatively close, so a larger panel would dominate the room.
- You need a lighter set for a wall arm or a shelf with a modest weight limit.
- Content is mostly broadcast television, streaming HD, news or casual bedroom viewing rather than detailed 4K material.
Roku’s published Select HD information describes its 32- and 40-inch HD sizes as 720p/1080p options. Check the exact resolution of the model you are buying; “HD” in a series name does not establish the same panel specification for every region or production year.
Best larger fit: 40, 42 or 43 inches
If your available width allows more than a compact 32-inch set, the next practical step is 40 inches. Roku lists a 40-inch Select Series HD television, and TCL UK’s compact category extends through 40 inches. A 42- or 43-inch television can provide a larger picture or 4K resolution, but only after its complete dimensions have been checked.

40 inches for a modest step up
A 40-inch screen is eight inches larger diagonally than a 32-inch screen. That does not translate into a simple eight-inch increase in width, because aspect ratio and bezel design determine the body size. Measure the actual product rather than estimating from the diagonal. Roku’s 40-inch listing confirms the size is available in a current HD series, but it does not establish one universal chassis, price or feature set.

TechRadar’s 2026 40–43-inch guide lists the LG OLED42C6 with a 42-inch diagonal, 3840 × 2160 resolution, OLED panel technology, webOS 26 and listed dimensions of 932 × 540 × 40.6 mm. Those figures illustrate why a nominally larger television can still be a viable replacement: the exact body dimensions matter more than the label. Confirm whether the manufacturer’s measurement refers to the panel only or the complete chassis, and obtain the separate stand dimensions before ordering.
43 inches for a 4K compact-room option
Roku’s Select Series 4K lineup starts at 43 inches. That makes 43 inches a sensible search size when 4K is a requirement and the wall or furniture can accommodate it. Other manufacturers may offer 4K at smaller sizes, so compare the actual SKU instead of assuming that every 32- or 40-inch television has the same resolution. A 43-inch television can also be substantially wider or deeper than the particular 42-inch example above.
Measure the space before choosing a screen
Write down the usable opening, not just the furniture’s advertised width. Include trim, doors, shelves, wall obstacles and the space needed to route cables. Then compare those measurements with the manufacturer’s model sheet.
- Measure maximum width. Measure between the nearest obstructions at the narrowest point. Leave clearance for ventilation and for inserting or removing the television.
- Measure maximum height. Account for the stand, not only the panel. A center stand and two-foot stand can have very different height requirements.
- Measure depth. Include the rear housing, power plug, HDMI connectors and any cable bend radius. A television that fits with cables removed may not fit when connected.
- Check the stand footprint. Confirm the distance between feet or the width of a center pedestal. Measure the shelf’s load rating and its usable flat area.
- Plan wall mounting separately. Verify the VESA pattern, screw length, bracket capacity, wall construction and the television’s rear clearance. A wall-mounted set still needs room for cables and ventilation.
- Compare the finished installation. Use the model-specific width, height and depth with the stand attached or removed, as appropriate. Do not infer those values from the diagonal.
Which? notes that shrinking bezels can allow a larger screen to occupy the space formerly used by a smaller television. That design trend is useful, but it is not consistent enough to skip the measurement step.

Which? places a Full-HD 32-inch television and a 4K 40-inch television at roughly the same viewing distance—about 2.5 metres—in its size guidance. Treat that as Which?’s rule of thumb, not a universal threshold. Eyesight, content quality, scaling, room lighting and personal preference change the result.
- Choose 32-inch HD or Full HD when the priority is a compact body, ordinary broadcast and streaming content, and a short-to-moderate seating distance.
- Choose 40 inches when you want a visibly larger image but the available width does not support a 42- or 43-inch chassis.
- Choose 42 or 43 inches in 4K when you sit close enough to benefit from detail, use a console or PC, or watch a substantial amount of 4K streaming.
Always check the actual panel resolution in the model documentation. Roku’s lineup separates its Select HD and Select 4K series, with 4K beginning at 43 inches in the listed range; that is a Roku product distinction, not an industry-wide size rule.
Check smart-TV features instead of relying on the series name
A television’s diagonal does not tell you whether it has the apps, tuners or connections you need. Before paying, open the precise model page and verify:
Recommended Free Tools
- Operating system and apps: Confirm the platform version, streaming services available in your country and how long the model is expected to receive updates.
- Inputs: Count HDMI ports, identify any eARC or ARC port, and check whether a console, soundbar, set-top box and laptop can be connected simultaneously.
- Broadcast tuners: Confirm the tuner standard for your region. A television imported from another market may not receive local broadcasts without an external tuner.
- HDR support: Check the supported HDR formats and whether the panel’s brightness is suitable for the room. A logo alone does not describe real-world picture performance.
- Audio: Verify speaker output, optical or HDMI audio connections and Bluetooth support if you plan to use headphones or a soundbar.
- Remote and network features: Check Wi-Fi bands, Ethernet availability, voice controls and whether the remote includes direct-service buttons that matter to you.
Roku’s lineup table demonstrates that features can vary by series even when sizes overlap. Roku also warns that Roku-powered televisions made by other manufacturers should be researched through those manufacturers, so do not assume that every television using the same platform has identical hardware or software support.

Television sizes and model names are country-specific. The Panasonic 32-inch S65C announcement cited here is for the United States, while TCL’s compact-size descriptions are from the United Kingdom. A model listed in one market may be unavailable, differently specified or sold under another name elsewhere.
Compare the price in your own currency, delivery fees, return window, dead-pixel policy and warranty provider. Check whether the warranty is handled by the manufacturer or the retailer, and whether the support network covers your address. Avoid carrying a foreign review’s price into your budget: promotions, taxes, panel batches and regional features change the total cost.

For a constrained installation, return logistics matter almost as much as the purchase price. Keep the packaging until the set is powered on, inspected for panel damage and confirmed to fit with the stand and cables attached.
A practical decision process
- Set the hard limits. Record the maximum width, height and depth, plus the minimum cable and ventilation clearance.
- Choose the largest diagonal that clears those limits. Start with 32 inches; test 40, 42 and 43 inches against the model sheet rather than against an estimated diagonal.
- Select the resolution for the seating distance. Use the 2.5-metre comparison from Which? as a reference point, then adjust for your eyesight and content.
- Filter by required connections and apps. Eliminate models that lack the tuner, HDMI count, audio return channel or service support you need.
- Confirm the regional SKU. Match the model number on the retailer page to the manufacturer’s documentation for your country.
- Check the complete installation. Include stand placement, wall bracket, cable bends, ventilation, viewing angle and access to power switches.
- Buy from a seller with a workable return policy. This protects you if the measured body, stand or regional software differs from the listing.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by diagonal alone
A nominal 36-inch replacement may have been chosen for a cabinet that actually allows only a particular width. Conversely, a modern 42-inch model with narrow bezels may fit where an older television did not. Use published body and stand measurements, not the diagonal, as the pass-or-fail test.
Assuming every 32-inch television is Full HD
Resolution varies by model and series. Verify the specification for the exact SKU; do not infer it from the screen size or a retailer’s abbreviated title.
Ignoring the feet
Many fit failures happen because the panel clears the shelf but the feet extend beyond it. Check the feet’s outside width, front-to-back depth and placement, especially when a soundbar will share the shelf.
Forgetting regional compatibility
A television announced in the United States or categorized in the United Kingdom may not use the same tuner, app catalog, power plug or warranty terms in another country. Buy the regional model and confirm support before installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExpecting an exact modern CRT replacement
Historical Sony Trinitron/WEGA CRT families included nominal 36-inch products such as the KV-36XBR800. Sony ended Trinitron production in Japan in 2004 and in the United States in 2006. These sets are historical references, not practical current smart-TV alternatives: CRT cabinets are deep and heavy, and they lack modern streaming features without external equipment.
Which size should you buy?
Choose a 32-inch television when width and depth are the limiting factors. Choose a 40-inch model when you can enlarge the picture without compromising clearance and you do not specifically need 4K. Consider a 42- or 43-inch set when its exact dimensions fit and you want a larger or 4K-capable display. The right answer to “best 36-inch TV” is therefore a measured fit, not an unverified exact-size product.
