What is the best TV browser?
The best browser is the one that is already supported by your television and can open the websites you actually need. A built-in browser is usually the least troublesome option on LG and Samsung sets. On Google TV or Android TV, the best option may be a browser app listed for your particular device and country, but there is no universal app choice guaranteed across every model.

No comparable cross-platform testing establishes a speed or usability winner among LG, Samsung and Google/Android TV browsers. Engine-version information is useful for judging likely compatibility, not for declaring one platform fastest.
Check your TV before choosing a browser
1. Identify the platform and model year
Open the TV’s settings and note the model number, operating-system version and country or region. The same brand can use different browser engines and app catalogs across model years. Write down the exact model before searching an app store or buying an accessory.
2. Decide what you need to browse
Make a short list of the sites and tasks that matter: reading articles, searching, entering forms, watching web video, using a web application or opening pages that request a desktop browser. A browser that is adequate for reading may be frustrating for long passwords or complex web apps.
3. Look for the supported path
- On LG, look for the built-in Web browser from the Home screen.
- On Samsung, use the TV’s built-in Internet or browser application when present.
- On Google TV or Android TV, open Google Play and search only among apps offered for that device.
- On a TCL Google TV or Android TV set, check whether BrowseHere appears in the television’s own store.
If an app does not appear, do not assume that sideloading it will make it compatible. The absence can indicate a model, platform or regional restriction.
LG TV browser: the built-in option
How to open it
- Press Home on the LG remote.
- Select Web browser.
- Enter a web address or a keyword in the address/search field.
- Use the browser controls to go back, refresh pages, save favorites and change available settings.
LG USA’s support guide, dated July 17, 2026, says browser speed varies with the network environment and that browser functions can be more limited than on PCs or mobile devices. The guide covers multiple models, so screen images and individual options may differ on your set.
LG webOS engine versions
LG does not have one universal browser version. Its developer documentation lists the following web engines by webOS TV generation:
| webOS TV generation | Typical model year | Documented engine |
|---|---|---|
| webOS TV 26 | 2026 | Chromium 132 |
| webOS TV 25 | 2025 | Chromium 120 |
| webOS TV 24 | 2024 | Chromium 108 |
| webOS TV 23 | 2023 | Chromium 94 |
| webOS TV 22 | 2022 | Chromium 87 |
| webOS TV 6.x | 2021 | Chromium 79 |
| webOS TV 5.x | 2020 | Chromium 68 |
| webOS TV 4.x | 2018–2019 | Chromium 53 |
| webOS TV 3.x | 2016–2017 | Chromium 38 |
| webOS TV 1.x/2.x | Earlier models | WebKit |
These are platform specifications, not guarantees that every site will work. On webOS TV 1.x and 2.x, LG notes that the internal browser and web apps used different engines. Check your own version under Settings > General > TV Information before judging compatibility.
Remote control and practical limits
LG’s online manual describes Magic Remote gestures for scrolling and zooming webpages. A pointer-style remote can make occasional browsing easier than a conventional directional pad, but it does not turn the TV into a desktop computer. Older LG manuals also describe possible memory, display and playback limitations.

Samsung TV browser: check the Tizen year
How to use it
- Open the TV’s Home screen and launch its Internet or browser application.
- Choose the address/search field and enter a URL or search phrase with the on-screen keyboard.
- Use the navigation controls to move between pages and adjust any available browser settings.
Samsung’s browser engine changes by Tizen generation. A newer model is not automatically faster in every situation, but its newer engine may support web standards that older models lack.
Samsung engine versions by model year
| Model year | Tizen version | Documented Chromium engine |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Tizen 10.0 | M130 |
| 2025 | Tizen 9.0 | M120 |
| 2024 | Tizen 8.0 | M108 |
| 2023 | Tizen 7.0 | M94 |
| 2022 | Tizen 6.5 | M85 |
| 2021 | Tizen 6.0 | M76 |
| 2020 | Tizen 5.5 | M69 |
| 2016 | Tizen 2.4 | WebKit |
| Other earlier years | Older Tizen generations | Older engines; exact version varies |
Samsung presents these figures as developer specifications. They describe the web engine, not an independent consumer performance ranking. For a site that fails to load, record the TV’s model year and compare the site’s requirements with the engine generation rather than assuming a different downloadable browser will solve it.
Google TV and Android TV browser apps
What Google Play availability means
Google TV and Android TV support app downloads through Google Play, but Google says the apps and features shown can depend on the device, country, language and other availability conditions. Consequently, an app visible on one television may not appear on another television in the same household or on the same platform in a different region.
- Open Apps or Google Play Store on the TV.
- Search for a browser by name.
- Open the listing and check that it is marked compatible with your device.
- Install it, then test the exact websites and controls you need.
Do not assume that a familiar computer browser is universally installable on a TV. The supported catalog is determined by the television, its operating-system build and regional availability.
TCL and BrowseHere
TCL says BrowseHere is available on many of its Google TV and Android TV models. “Many” does not mean every model or region. If BrowseHere is absent from your TV’s store, TCL says the model, region or platform may not support it. Treat it as a TCL-specific option and verify the listing on the television itself.
When an installed app is still the wrong choice
A browser can install successfully yet fail on a particular site because of unsupported video formats, scripts, sign-in flows, pop-ups, memory limits or a layout designed for touch and mouse input. Test before moving bookmarks or relying on the TV for an important account.

How engine age affects website compatibility
The Chromium or WebKit number is a useful clue when diagnosing a failing page. Newer engines generally contain newer web-platform features, while older engines can struggle with scripts or security requirements written for current browsers. However, an engine number does not reveal the TV’s memory, processor, network conditions or the site’s own restrictions. It is therefore a starting point for troubleshooting, not a promise of support.

Keep a record of the exact model and year when contacting a website or TV manufacturer. Saying only “I have an LG” or “I use Android TV” omits the information needed to identify the browser engine and app catalog. On LG, the webOS generation is shown in TV Information; on Samsung, the model year maps to the Tizen generation in the specification table. Google TV and Android TV listings provide the most direct availability check because the store filters results for the logged-in device.
Built-in browser or downloadable app?
| Situation | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| LG webOS TV | Built-in Web browser | It is integrated with the platform and documented by LG. |
| Samsung Tizen TV | Built-in Internet/browser | Engine and controls are matched to the TV generation. |
| Google TV or Android TV | Compatible Google Play listing | Availability is device- and region-dependent. |
| TCL Google TV or Android TV | Check for BrowseHere | TCL documents support on many, but not all, models. |
| Older television | Test the built-in option first | Older engines may have compatibility limits that no app can remove. |
Choose a downloadable app only when it is listed for your exact device and improves a specific task. Installing several browsers rarely fixes a limitation caused by the TV’s processor, memory, operating system or web engine.
Match the browser to the task
| Your task | Most sensible starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Reading news or reference pages | Built-in browser or a listed TV app | Readable layout, scrolling and page loading |
| Short searches | Whichever browser is already installed | On-screen keyboard and ability to save favorites |
| Frequent passwords or forms | Browser with a supported keyboard or pointer remote | Text-entry comfort, sign-in flow and page stability |
| Web video | Dedicated TV app when available; otherwise test the browser | Site support, video format, playback and sign-in |
| Complex web applications | Phone, tablet or computer unless the TV passes a full test | Scripts, memory, pop-ups, layout and current web requirements |
This task-based approach prevents a common mistake: selecting a browser because it has a familiar name, then discovering that the television cannot handle the site’s video, scripts or input method. Test the one or two pages you use most before treating the browser as a dependable daily tool.

Improve text entry
- Use the on-screen keyboard for short searches and URLs.
- If supported, pair a compatible Bluetooth or USB keyboard for passwords and forms.
- Save frequently used pages as favorites instead of retyping long addresses.
Use the right network
Place the TV where its Wi-Fi signal is reliable, or use wired networking if the model provides it. A slow or unstable connection can look like a browser failure. Reload once after the connection stabilizes before changing apps.
Keep expectations realistic
TV browsers are best for occasional, sofa-distance tasks. Dedicated apps are often better for services that offer them, while a phone, tablet or computer remains more suitable for complex web applications, extended typing and pages that require current desktop features.
Use remote features deliberately
A pointer-style remote can reduce the effort of selecting links and scrolling, while a conventional directional remote may be adequate for short searches. LG’s Magic Remote documentation specifically describes webpage scrolling and zooming. Those controls vary by television and remote model, so confirm support rather than assuming every Magic Remote works with every LG set.
Common selection mistakes
- Choosing by brand alone: LG webOS and Samsung Tizen engines change by generation, and Google Play catalogs change by device and region.
- Calling an engine version a speed score: Chromium M130 or Chromium 132 is a developer specification, not a measured ranking.
- Assuming a computer browser is installable: Google TV and Android TV show only apps made available for that device and country.
- Assuming BrowseHere is universal: TCL describes it as available on many compatible models, not every TCL or every Android TV.
- Buying a remote without checking the model: an LG-branded replacement still needs to match the exact television and remote model.
- Using the browser for every service: a dedicated TV app or another device may handle video and sign-in more reliably.
Troubleshooting a site that will not work
The browser or app is missing
- Confirm the TV’s country/region and software version.
- Search the built-in store using the exact app name.
- Check the manufacturer’s support page for your model, not just the product family.
- If the listing is unavailable, treat that as a compatibility restriction rather than a download error.
The page loads incorrectly
- Refresh and test a simpler page to separate a network problem from a site-specific problem.
- Clear available browsing data or restart the TV if those controls are provided.
- Try the site’s mobile or simplified view when offered.
- Check the TV’s engine generation; older Chromium or WebKit versions may not support newer scripts or security requirements.
Video, audio or sign-in fails
- Confirm that the site supports TV browsers and that the TV’s date and time are correct.
- Test the service’s dedicated TV app if one exists.
- Do not infer that another browser app will add codecs, digital-rights support or memory that the television lacks.
Scrolling and zooming are awkward
Use a pointer-capable remote where the TV supports one. On LG, the Magic Remote documentation describes webpage scrolling and zooming, but the exact behavior depends on the TV and remote model. Verify compatibility before purchasing a replacement.

When to stop troubleshooting
After identifying the model, checking the network and testing a simple page, persistent failure usually points to a site, engine or platform limitation rather than a missing setting. If a service offers a dedicated TV app, try that path. For forms, account management or web applications that demand extensive typing, moving the task to a phone, tablet or computer is often more practical than installing multiple TV browsers.

- Built-in Virtual Assistant – just press the mic button on the remote to get what you want
- Built-in content and entertainment including YouTube, Play Movies & TV, and more

A practical decision checklist
- Record the exact TV model, model year, operating system and region.
- Identify the websites and tasks you need, including video and forms.
- Open the built-in browser if your TV provides one.
- On Google TV or Android TV, search Google Play for apps shown as compatible with that device.
- On TCL sets, check whether BrowseHere is listed; absence may reflect model or regional support.
- Test your most important site before saving passwords or depending on the browser.
- If the browser is too limited, use the site’s dedicated TV app or move the task to a phone, tablet or computer.
Bottom line: choose by compatibility, not a universal ranking
For an LG or Samsung owner, begin with the built-in browser and check the TV’s webOS or Tizen generation when a site fails. For Google TV and Android TV, install only apps offered for the exact device and region; TCL owners can look for BrowseHere but should not assume it is available everywhere. The most useful “best TV browser” decision is therefore a model-specific compatibility check, followed by a test of the websites you actually use.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best browser for Android TV?
There is no universal winner. Open Google Play on your specific Android TV, install only apps listed as compatible, and test the websites and controls you need. Availability can vary by device, country and language.
Is BrowseHere available on every TCL Google TV?
No. TCL says BrowseHere is available on many Google TV and Android TV models. If it does not appear in your television’s store, your model, region or platform may not support it.
Does LG TV have a built-in web browser?
LG documents a Web browser opened from Home. You can enter a URL or keyword, go back, refresh pages, save favorites and adjust available settings. Menus and features vary by model.
Which browser engine does my LG TV use?
It depends on the webOS generation. LG lists Chromium 132 for webOS TV 26, Chromium 120 for webOS TV 25, Chromium 108 for webOS TV 24 and progressively older Chromium or WebKit engines on earlier generations. Check Settings > General > TV Information.
Which browser engine does my Samsung TV use?
Samsung’s table maps the model year to Tizen and Chromium versions: 2026 uses M130, 2025 M120, 2024 M108, 2023 M94, 2022 M85, 2021 M76 and 2020 M69. Earlier sets use older engines, including WebKit on 2016 Tizen 2.4.
Why does a website work on my phone but not my TV?
TV browsers may use an older engine, have less memory, lack a required video format or handle sign-in and touch-oriented layouts differently. Test a simpler page, check the TV’s engine generation and use a dedicated TV app or another device when available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan I install Chrome or Firefox on any smart TV?
No universal installation is established. Google TV and Android TV show apps according to device and regional availability, while LG and Samsung users generally start with the built-in browser. Check your TV’s own app catalog.
Will a replacement LG Magic Remote work with my TV browser?
Only if it matches the exact TV and remote models. LG documentation describes scrolling and zooming with compatible Magic Remotes, but the LG name alone does not establish compatibility.
The Bottom Line
Choose a TV browser by exact platform, model year, region and website compatibility—not by a universal ranking. Start with the built-in LG or Samsung browser, or a Google Play app listed for your Google TV or Android TV, then test your most important sites.
