For GTA VI on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, start with an HDR-capable 4K display in Game Mode, connect the console directly with an HDMI 2.1-capable cable, disable automatic picture processing and Dynamic Tone Mapping, and enable HGIG when the TV provides it. Calibrate HDR at the console, then make small adjustments only when the game presents its own reference image.

Rockstar lists GTA VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with an official release date of November 19, 2026. Its site labels PS5 “Plays Best On,” but Rockstar has not published a definitive launch frame-rate target, graphics-mode list, VRR range or PS5 Pro performance specification. The settings below therefore optimize the display chain without promising an unconfirmed 60-fps mode.

What is officially known about GTA VI display support

Rockstar’s current platform listing names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The official game site gives November 19, 2026 as the release date and marks the PS5 version “Plays Best On.” Sony also says the PS5 version uses DualSense haptics, Tempest 3D AudioTech and the console’s SSD.

Those platform facts do not establish a particular resolution, frame rate or graphics preset. No authoritative launch specification reviewed here confirms a 60-fps mode, a 40-fps mode, a named Performance or Quality mode, a VRR operating range, or a PS5 Pro enhancement. Treat those details as unknown until Rockstar publishes them.

Use this baseline TV configuration first

1. Put the console on the correct HDMI input

Connect the PS5 or Xbox directly to the TV rather than routing it through a receiver, soundbar or switch while you are diagnosing HDR. Use the display’s full-bandwidth or enhanced HDMI setting if its manufacturer requires that setting for HDR or HDMI 2.1 features. Rockstar’s HDR troubleshooting guidance specifically calls for an HDMI 2.1-capable connection.

An Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable is the practical choice for this direct connection. The cable does not create a higher frame rate by itself; it removes a common bandwidth and handshake limitation between a modern console and TV.

2. Select Game Mode

Choose the TV’s Game Mode, or its equivalent low-latency gaming preset. This bypasses processing that can add delay between a controller input and the image. Rockstar’s support guidance states: “Enable the Game Mode preset, if available.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Game Mode can change brightness, local-dimming behavior and color from the TV’s Cinema or Filmmaker preset. Calibrate the game input after selecting Game Mode instead of calibrating another picture preset and assuming the values carry over.

3. Turn off automatic picture processing

Disable AI enhancement, Smart, Dynamic and Adaptive picture features. Also turn off motion interpolation, noise reduction, frame smoothing, edge enhancement and other automatic processing while testing. Rockstar explicitly advises disabling picture-enhancement features, including AI enhancement and Smart, Dynamic or Adaptive settings.

These features can alter shadow detail, add halos, introduce motion artifacts or increase latency. You can experiment later, but a neutral Game Mode image is the reliable starting point for judging GTA VI’s HDR output.

4. Disable Dynamic Tone Mapping and enable HGIG when available

Turn off Dynamic Tone Mapping. It continuously remaps HDR highlights and can make a game look brighter while changing the creator’s intended contrast. If the TV offers an HGIG option, enable it. Rockstar says to enable HGIG (HDR Gaming Interest Group) features when the display supports them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HGIG is most useful when the console and game use a correctly calibrated HDR output. If enabling it makes the image visibly clipped or too dark, repeat the console’s HDR calibration rather than compensating with random TV sliders.

5. Set local dimming and basic controls deliberately

Use the TV’s strongest stable local-dimming setting if it does not cause distracting flicker or pumping. Rockstar advises adjusting brightness, contrast, local dimming and sharpness as needed while HDR is active, but it does not prescribe universal numeric values. Panel design, room lighting and the TV’s Game Mode implementation make a single number unreliable.

Leave sharpness near the neutral midpoint. Excessive sharpness adds outlines to text and geometry; reducing it too far can soften the image. Set color temperature to the neutral or warm option you normally use, and avoid changing color saturation to fix a luminance problem.

Best PS5 HDR settings for GTA VI

Configure the PS5 after the TV is already in Game Mode and the correct HDMI input is selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  2. Set HDR to “On When Supported.” Sony documents this mode as enabling HDR for supported games and apps while leaving non-HDR content in SDR.
  3. Select “Adjust HDR.” Follow the three calibration screens and adjust until the symbol is barely visible at the level Sony requests. Perform this with the TV in the same Game Mode you will use for GTA VI.
  4. Check the output information. Confirm that the PS5 detects HDR and the refresh-rate options your TV actually supports. If HDR disappears when you select a high refresh rate, revisit the TV’s enhanced/full-bandwidth HDMI setting and the cable connection.
  5. Leave in-game brightness at its default initially. When GTA VI provides a calibration screen, use its reference logo or icon rather than the TV’s store demo or a different game.

“On When Supported” is preferable to forcing HDR on every title because SDR games and apps remain in SDR. That avoids applying an HDR conversion to content that was not authored for it.

Best Xbox Series X|S HDR setup

On Xbox Series X or Series S, open the console’s display settings and run the built-in HDR calibration tool. Exact labels can vary with Xbox system software and the TV model, so follow the on-screen prompts rather than relying on a menu name from an older guide.

  1. Set the TV input to Game Mode and enhanced/full-bandwidth HDMI before starting the wizard.
  2. Run HDR calibration for the console. Adjust the dark and bright patterns until the reference symbols are visible only as instructed.
  3. Confirm the console reports HDR and the intended refresh rate. If the TV reports SDR, reconnect the console directly and test another HDMI 2.1-capable cable or input.
  4. Enable VRR only after the basic signal is stable. Turn it on in the Xbox display options and in the TV’s gaming settings when both devices report support.
  5. Use GTA VI’s own HDR controls when available. Do not raise the TV’s brightness globally to compensate for a game slider that has not yet been calibrated.

Because Xbox menu labels and available options can change with system updates, the important checks are the signal status, HDR calibration result and refresh-rate report—not a particular wording in a third-party tutorial.

VRR, refresh rate and the meaning of “smooth”

Variable refresh rate can reduce tearing and make uneven frame delivery feel less abrupt when the console and TV both support it. Enable VRR on both devices, then test an actual game scene for flicker, brightness pulsing or dropouts. A TV may support VRR in one HDMI mode but not another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GTA VI’s exact VRR behavior and supported range have not been documented in the authoritative information currently available. VRR should therefore be treated as a display-chain option, not proof that the game will hold a particular frame rate.

Do not buy a TV or change settings on the assumption that GTA VI will run at 60 fps. Rockstar has not published a complete launch performance specification. A 120-Hz panel can still be useful for games that support higher refresh rates, but its presence does not guarantee a 120-fps or 60-fps GTA VI mode.

How to compare TVs for GTA VI

Compare the features that affect latency, HDR accuracy and signal compatibility rather than choosing by a single brightness claim.

Criterion What to look for Why it matters
HDR calibration controls Separate HDR brightness and contrast controls, plus a clear Game Mode Lets you calibrate the console without altering your SDR picture preset.
HGIG HGIG or an equivalent HDR gaming option Provides a defined starting point for console tone mapping when supported.
Game Mode latency Published low input-lag results at the resolutions and refresh rates you use Reduces the delay between a controller action and the displayed response.
HDMI 2.1 bandwidth At least one input with the bandwidth required for the console’s HDR and high-refresh output Prevents a port or cable from becoming the bottleneck.
4K support A 4K-capable panel and console-compatible input Allows the console to output its supported 4K signal; GTA VI’s internal rendering resolution is not confirmed.
VRR compatibility VRR on the HDMI input used by the console, with a clearly stated operating range Can smooth frame-time variation when the game and console use it.
Local dimming A gaming mode that retains stable local dimming without severe blooming or flicker Improves HDR contrast while avoiding distracting brightness changes.
Console features Support for the PS5 or Xbox signal formats you intend to use Ensures the TV can accept the console’s chosen HDR, resolution and refresh combination.

These are selection criteria, not a ranking of particular models. Check the exact HDMI input specifications: some TVs provide full bandwidth on only one or two ports.

Fix common HDR and performance problems

HDR is unavailable or the picture falls back to SDR

  • Confirm the console is connected directly to the TV.
  • Enable the TV’s enhanced or full-bandwidth HDMI mode for that input.
  • Try another HDMI 2.1-capable cable and another HDMI input identified for high-bandwidth signals.
  • Restart the TV and console after changing HDMI settings; this forces a new handshake.
  • On PS5, return to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and verify HDR is set to “On When Supported.” On Xbox, rerun the display information and HDR calibration screens.

The image looks gray, washed out or too bright

  • Check that Dynamic Tone Mapping and automatic contrast or brightness modes are off.
  • Confirm the TV is in HDR Game Mode rather than an SDR preset.
  • Repeat the console HDR calibration with the TV’s final Game Mode settings.
  • If HGIG is enabled, compare the result with the TV’s neutral HDR option; use the mode that preserves the calibration pattern without clipping, then leave other processing disabled.

Dark areas are crushed or highlights clip

  • Do not raise the TV backlight or brightness blindly. Re-run Adjust HDR on PS5 or the Xbox HDR wizard.
  • Set local dimming to a stable level and watch for whether shadow detail changes when subtitles or bright objects appear.
  • When GTA VI exposes an HDR slider, follow its reference image. A game-specific slider can override the console’s general calibration.

Input feels delayed

  • Verify Game Mode is active on the exact HDMI input in use.
  • Disable motion interpolation, noise reduction, AI enhancement and other processing.
  • Connect the console directly rather than through an audio device or switch.
  • Check that the TV has not switched to a cinematic HDR preset after detecting the signal.

VRR causes flicker or dropouts

  • Confirm both the TV and console report VRR support at the selected resolution and refresh rate.
  • Test with VRR disabled to determine whether the artifact is VRR-specific.
  • Use the TV input with the documented high-bandwidth capability and replace the cable if the signal intermittently disconnects.
  • Do not infer GTA VI’s supported VRR range from another game; Rockstar has not published that behavior.

Recommended setup order on launch day

  1. Update the TV and console system software, then power-cycle both devices.
  2. Select the console’s HDMI input and enable enhanced/full-bandwidth mode if required.
  3. Choose Game Mode and disable AI, Smart, Dynamic, Adaptive, motion and other automatic enhancements.
  4. Disable Dynamic Tone Mapping and enable HGIG if the TV supports it.
  5. Connect directly with an HDMI 2.1-capable cable.
  6. Calibrate HDR on the console: PS5 uses Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR > Adjust HDR; Xbox uses its display and HDR calibration tools.
  7. Enable VRR only after HDR and the base refresh-rate signal work reliably.
  8. Start GTA VI with its default image controls, then use the game’s own calibration screen when available.

What these settings cannot guarantee

Correct TV and console configuration can reduce input latency, preserve HDR intent and prevent avoidable HDMI problems. It cannot create a performance mode that the game does not offer. Until Rockstar publishes GTA VI’s launch graphics modes, frame-rate targets, VRR behavior and any PS5 Pro differences, claims that a particular combination guarantees 60 fps remain unverified.

The defensible target is a stable, correctly calibrated signal: Game Mode for latency, direct HDMI 2.1-capable connectivity for bandwidth, neutral HDR processing with HGIG where supported, and console calibration performed after the final TV settings are selected.
