Best turn-based strategy games like Zero Company for Steam Machine

Start with Into the Breach. Its Steam listing identifies it as turn-based strategy, supports SteamOS and Linux, and lists 1 GB minimum memory. Choose XCOM 2 when you want a deeper squad campaign; Feral Interactive says its Linux release was fully tested on Ubuntu 14.04.2 and SteamOS. Verify the specific Steam Machine compatibility rating and test text and controller behavior at your television before committing.

The short list

Only two games in this comparison have the platform evidence needed for a responsible recommendation. Into the Breach has a native SteamOS/Linux listing and the clearest low-memory requirement. XCOM 2 has a Linux version documented by Feral Interactive, with testing on Ubuntu 14.04.2 and SteamOS. Both are better starting points than choosing a Windows-only title on genre resemblance alone.

Into the Breach The official Steam page lists SteamOS and Linux support and labels the game turn-based strategy: Steam store page. 1 GB minimum memory on the Steam listing. A straightforward first choice for a Steam Machine owner who wants turn-based strategy with a modest published memory requirement.
XCOM 2 Feral Interactive’s Linux FAQ says the Linux version was fully tested on Ubuntu 14.04.2 and SteamOS: Feral Linux FAQ. not stated in the cited Linux FAQ. A longer, deeper squad-campaign experience for players willing to check more demanding compatibility details.

What “runs well” means on a Steam Machine

“Runs well” is not synonymous with “belongs to the same genre.” Valve maintains separate compatibility ratings for Steam Machine and Steam Deck, so a result for one device should not be treated as a guarantee for the other. Check the rating attached to the exact title and the exact Steam Machine configuration you own. Valve’s compatibility documentation is the reference point for how those ratings are assigned: Steamworks hardware compatibility documentation.

Native Linux support versus Proton

A native Linux build is compiled for Linux and is the simplest compatibility case to investigate. Windows-only games can instead run through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer. Valve states: “On Deck and Machine, games without native Linux builds will be run through Proton.” That makes Proton a useful expansion of the library, but it also adds a variable that a native build does not have: the game, its launcher and its copy-protection system must all cooperate with the compatibility layer.

For this reason, treat a SteamOS/Linux label and a Machine rating as separate checks. The label tells you that a Linux build is offered; the rating tells you how the title behaves under Valve’s device-specific criteria. If a title has neither a native build nor a clear Machine result, regard it as an experiment rather than a dependable living-room purchase.

Use the Deck criteria as a practical television test

Valve’s Deck Verified criteria require support for the default 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolution, sensible default settings and text that remains legible. Those criteria are written for Deck, not as a substitute for the Steam Machine rating, but they are a useful living-room test. At normal sofa distance, menus, mission objectives and tooltips must be readable without leaning toward the screen or changing settings every time you launch.

The criteria are especially relevant to turn-based games because you spend substantial time reading interface text and selecting commands. A title that launches successfully but renders small, clipped or poorly scaled text is not a good “runs well” result for a television setup.

Into the Breach: the safest first recommendation

Into the Breach should be your first download when the priority is a clearly documented Linux path with a light published memory requirement. Its official Steam listing calls it turn-based strategy, lists SteamOS and Linux support, and specifies 1 GB of minimum memory. Those are concrete signals for a Steam Machine buyer; they do not depend on assuming that another title’s Proton behavior will be identical.

Why it fits this search

  • Genre match: the store page explicitly identifies it as turn-based strategy.
  • Platform match: SteamOS and Linux are listed directly rather than inferred from community reports.
  • Published baseline: the listed minimum memory is 1 GB, giving you a clear starting point when checking your machine.
  • Lower uncertainty: a native listing avoids making Proton compatibility the first question.

The listing does not establish every living-room detail a buyer may care about. In particular, do not infer controller comfort, television-distance readability or a Steam Machine rating solely from the genre label. Check those items on your hardware before settling on it as your regular sofa game.

How to validate it on your setup

  1. Open the official Steam page and confirm that the SteamOS/Linux support information still appears for your store region.
  2. Compare the 1 GB minimum-memory figure with your machine’s available memory. A minimum requirement is a floor for starting the game, not a promise about frame rate, loading time or television output.
  3. Install the game and launch it at the resolution your television uses. Confirm that menus and instructional text are readable from your normal seat.
  4. Connect the controller you intend to use and move through the title’s menus before beginning a serious campaign. If a required action is awkward or unavailable, decide whether keyboard and mouse access is practical from your sofa.
  5. Record the result for your exact Steam Machine. A successful test on one model should not be generalized to every machine carrying the Steam Machine name.

XCOM 2: the deeper squad-campaign option

XCOM 2 is the choice when your priority is a more involved squad campaign rather than the lowest published memory requirement. Feral Interactive’s Linux FAQ says its Linux version was fully tested on Ubuntu 14.04.2 and SteamOS. That is meaningful platform evidence, but it is not the same as a current performance guarantee for every Steam Machine or television configuration.

What the Linux testing tells you

The FAQ establishes that a Linux release exists and that Feral tested it on the named Ubuntu release and SteamOS. It does not provide a memory figure in the cited material, nor does it establish a single rating that applies to every Steam Machine model. Treat the test statement as confirmation that Linux support was part of the release’s validation, then perform the device-specific checks Valve recommends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game’s deeper squad-campaign focus also changes the practical test. You will spend more time in layered menus, unit-management screens and mission briefings, so text scaling and controller navigation deserve more attention than a quick launch test. If any essential information is difficult to read at 1280×720 or 1280×800, adjust the display settings and retest from the sofa before judging the experience.

When to choose it instead of Into the Breach

  • Choose XCOM 2 if a sustained squad campaign is the deciding factor and you are prepared to verify graphics, memory and interface behavior on your machine.
  • Choose Into the Breach if native SteamOS/Linux labeling and a clearly stated 1 GB minimum-memory requirement reduce more uncertainty for your setup.
  • If you cannot read strategic information comfortably at television distance, neither title has met your “runs well” requirement yet; change the display configuration or use a closer screen.

  1. Filter the store first. Steam Support recommends filtering the store for SteamOS + Linux games. Start there when you want native candidates: Steam Support’s Linux game guidance.
  2. Open the complete product page. Note the operating-system labels, minimum memory and graphics requirements that are actually published. Do not substitute a requirement from a different edition or operating system.
  3. Check the Machine result. Valve documents separate Machine and Deck ratings. Use the rating for your Steam Machine, not a Deck badge treated as a universal guarantee.
  4. Identify the execution path. A native Linux listing is one path; a Windows-only game may rely on Proton. Valve’s support guidance explains that Steam Play may run some Windows-only games on Linux, but “may” is not a promise for every title.
  5. Run the television test. Use the default or recommended resolution first. Confirm that text is legible at 1280×720 or 1280×800 where those modes are available, then adjust only if needed.
  6. Test the intended control method. Navigate menus, select a mission or scenario and perform a representative command. If the interface expects a mouse, decide whether your Steam Machine position makes that workable.
  7. Keep a fallback plan. If Proton is involved and the game fails to launch or displays unusable text, use Steam’s Linux troubleshooting guidance and reassess rather than assuming a different game in the same genre will behave identically.

Common failure modes and what to do

The game is not listed as a Linux option

Reapply the Steam store’s SteamOS + Linux filter and open the full product page. If the title is Windows-only, determine whether Steam Play and Proton are the intended route. Do not describe that title as a native Linux game, and do not treat a successful installation as proof that every update will remain compatible.

The game launches but the text is too small

Use the Deck Verified principles as your diagnostic: check the default resolution, restore sensible default settings and inspect the interface from your normal viewing distance. Turn-based strategy depends on readable information; a launch with illegible text is a usability failure, not a complete compatibility pass.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The controller works in the game but not in menus

Test the entire path from the title screen through a representative mission or scenario. Record which actions require a mouse or keyboard. If the listing does not document controller behavior, keep that uncertainty in your decision rather than assuming that a Linux label implies full controller support.

A title works on one machine but not another

Compare the exact hardware, operating-system image, resolution and compatibility rating. Valve’s separate Machine and Deck ratings exist because device context matters. A result on a Steam Deck, a different Steam Machine or a desktop Linux installation is useful evidence, but it is not a substitute for testing your own box.

A Proton title stops launching after an update

Recheck the game’s current Steam page and Steam Support’s Linux guidance. Proton is the execution path for Windows-only games on SteamOS, so updates to the game, launcher or compatibility layer can change the result. If reliability matters more than expanding the catalog, prefer the native SteamOS/Linux option documented for Into the Breach.

Which one should you install first?

Install Into the Breach first when you want the clearest combination of turn-based-strategy labeling, native SteamOS/Linux listing and a 1 GB minimum-memory figure. Install XCOM 2 first when a deeper squad campaign outweighs the need for a lighter published baseline and you are willing to validate the Linux build, display and controls on your specific Steam Machine. For either choice, the final test is the same: the correct Machine rating, a stable launch path and readable, controllable interface from the television distance at which you actually play.
