The best tripod depends on what you’re streaming with. For a phone-first setup, the SmallRig Encore PT-20 offers a built-in holder for horizontal or vertical framing and a cold shoe for an accessory. For a camera rig, choose a support system whose head can handle the complete rig with a margin to spare; the SmallRig AD-01 is a guide example for heavier setups, while the Manfrotto Befree Live Lever favors portability. These are manufacturer specifications and buying guidance, not a head-to-head independent test.

How to choose a tripod for your stream
Start with the device and the shot
A phone tripod or holder is the direct option for a phone-based stream. Check that the holder grips your phone securely, fits its width, and can set the phone in the orientation you need. If you already own a camera tripod, a compatible clamp may be enough; confirm both the phone dimensions and the clamp’s connection to your tripod head.

For a mostly static shot, secure support and suitable framing height matter most. If you need controlled pans or tilts, look for a video fluid head with adjustable drag. A ball head or simple phone stand is not the same kind of support for smooth camera movement.

Calculate the complete load, not just the camera body
Add up everything carried by the head: camera body, lens, microphone, light, transmitter, monitor, and mounting plates. SmallRig’s guide recommends roughly one-third to one-half of additional payload capacity over that total. It warns that an under-rated setup can micro-bounce or droop during long takes.
Do not treat a tripod’s leg capacity and its head’s capacity as interchangeable. Check the rating for the head as well as the tripod, and make sure the assembled setup stays within the applicable limits. For a rig whose weight distribution changes with lenses or accessories, counterbalance can help.

Match height, footprint, and portability to the room
Choose a working height that gives you the intended seated or standing frame, whether the tripod sits on a desk or the floor. A maximum-height figure alone does not tell you whether the shot will be stable: SmallRig notes that raising a center column can be less stable than reaching the same height with the legs. Check the leg spread against the room and the folded size and weight if you will carry the tripod often.
For example, the PT-20’s listed adjustment is 73–181 cm and its leg-spread diameter is 60 cm. The Manfrotto Befree Live Lever lists a 151 cm maximum height and a 4 kg safety payload. These are different kinds of tripods for different setups, not a universal performance ranking.

Check the connections and accessory room
Before choosing a clamp or tripod, verify the mount interface, plate compatibility, phone width, and whether there is space to attach a microphone or light. A cold shoe can provide an accessory mounting point, but check the product listing for what is included: an available mount does not necessarily mean an accessory comes in the box.
