Its devices keep private keys offline, support thousands of cryptocurrencies through Ledger Wallet, and can connect to third-party wallets when native support is unavailable. For different threat models, BitBox02 Nova prioritizes straightforward backups, Keystone emphasizes QR-based air-gapped transfers and a large touchscreen, and COLDCARD is the specialist choice for Bitcoin-only storage.
No hardware wallet is universally safest. The right choice depends on the assets you hold, whether you need an entirely air-gapped signing workflow, how much transaction information you want to verify on the device, your backup plan, and which desktop or mobile wallet you already use.

Quick comparison: which Trezor alternative fits?
| Wallet | Best fit | Security and workflow highlights | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ledger hardware wallet | People holding many networks and tokens | Secure Element, offline private-key storage, thousands of supported assets through Ledger Wallet, and third-party-wallet compatibility | Its design favors a Secure Element over the transparency-first model Ledger attributes to Trezor |
| BitBox02 Nova | Users who want a compact device and a simple, redundant backup | Secure element, USB-C, on-device confirmation, optional encrypted SD-card backup, Multi and Bitcoin-only editions | Asset coverage is more focused than a broad multi-chain platform |
| Keystone | People who prefer visible QR transfers and a large screen | Open-source firmware, 4-inch touchscreen, animated QR communication, microSD support, Secure Element, and PSBT Bitcoin multisig | QR-based workflows require compatible companion wallets and a little more coordination |
| COLDCARD | Bitcoin-only holders who want maximum isolation | Fully air-gapped signing, verifiable source code, anti-phishing words, destination verification, and advanced multisig controls | It is Bitcoin-only, so it cannot serve a diversified altcoin portfolio |
Use the table as a shortlist rather than a safety ranking. A device that is ideal for a Bitcoin multisig vault may be inconvenient for someone who regularly uses several token networks, while a broad-asset device may expose more connectivity and software choices than a highly isolated setup.

What matters when replacing a Trezor
A hardware wallet protects the private keys that authorize transactions. The device should keep those keys away from an internet-connected computer or phone, show enough transaction detail for you to verify what you are signing, and provide a recovery method that still works if the device is lost or damaged.
#1 Best Overall
- Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. - Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Asset coverage
Start with the exact coins and token standards you own. “Supported” can mean native support in a manufacturer’s app, support through a compatible third-party wallet, or the ability to sign a transaction format that another application understands. Those are not interchangeable. Ledger’s documentation, for example, says its devices support thousands of cryptocurrencies through Ledger Wallet and can be used with third-party wallets when an asset is not supported in Ledger Wallet itself.
Connectivity and isolation
USB, Bluetooth, mobile connections, microSD cards, and QR codes each create a different operating model. A USB-connected device can still keep keys offline, but transaction data travels over the cable. An air-gapped device transfers unsigned and signed data by QR code or removable storage, reducing the number of direct connections. Isolation is useful only if you consistently follow the isolated workflow.
On-device verification
A computer or phone can display a manipulated address or amount. The hardware wallet’s screen is the final place to check the destination, fee, and amount before approving. Larger screens and readable address displays reduce transcription mistakes, while anti-phishing features can help you notice an unexpected login or signing prompt.
Hardware tamper resistance
Secure Elements are specialized chips designed to make key extraction and physical tampering more difficult. Other designs place more emphasis on inspectable, open-source firmware and reproducible verification. These approaches address different concerns; neither fact alone proves that one product is safest for every user.
Backup and recovery
Your recovery phrase, not the device, is the ultimate backup. Consider how the wallet creates and confirms the phrase, whether it can make an additional encrypted backup, and whether you can restore it on replacement hardware. A convenient backup is not automatically a secure one: every extra copy increases the number of places that must be protected.
Software compatibility
Check the wallet applications you actually use before buying. Some devices work best with the manufacturer’s application, while others are designed around companion wallets such as Electrum or Wasabi. Multisig users should verify coordinator support, partially signed Bitcoin transaction (PSBT) handling, and the exact import and export method.
Ledger: the broad-asset alternative
Ledger is the most practical starting point when your portfolio spans many networks, tokens, or applications. Its official supported-assets information says the hardware wallets keep private keys offline and support thousands of cryptocurrencies through Ledger Wallet. When Ledger Wallet does not natively support an asset, Ledger says a compatible third-party wallet can be used instead.

Security model
Ledger centers its design on a Secure Element. In its comparison material, Ledger contrasts that architecture with Trezor’s transparency-oriented approach. The important buying question is not which slogan sounds better; it is whether you trust the manufacturer’s chip-and-firmware model and can verify transactions on the device before signing.

Who should choose it
- People holding several major chains alongside tokens that use different standards.
- Users who want one device to connect to a manufacturer application and, when necessary, a third-party wallet.
- Anyone who values broad software compatibility more than a strictly QR-only workflow.
Trade-offs
The breadth that makes Ledger convenient also means you should maintain a clear application inventory. Different assets may appear in different companion wallets, and an asset listed as compatible may require a third-party interface. Confirm the exact support path for every asset before transferring funds.
BitBox02 Nova: focused design with an optional encrypted backup
BitBox02 Nova is aimed at users who want a compact device, a direct USB-C connection, and a backup process that can include an encrypted SD card. BitBox describes a secure element, on-device confirmation, and two editions: Multi and Bitcoin-only.
Asset editions
The Multi edition lists Bitcoin, Ethereum, ERC-20 tokens, Cardano, and Litecoin. The Bitcoin-only edition removes the multi-asset scope for people who want a narrower device purpose. Choose the edition based on the assets you own now and expect to hold; a Bitcoin-only unit is not a future-proof choice for an altcoin portfolio.
Backup workflow
The optional encrypted SD-card backup gives you another recovery artifact in addition to the recovery phrase. Treat it as a protected backup, not as a replacement for understanding the phrase-based recovery process. Store the card separately from the device, protect any encryption credentials, and test recovery before depositing a substantial balance.
Support boundaries
BitBox states that support can help with device use but never handles a customer’s recovery phrase. That boundary is important: legitimate support should not ask you to type, photograph, or read the phrase aloud. Anyone requesting it is attempting to take control of the wallet.
Best use case
BitBox02 Nova fits a holder who wants a focused set of supported assets, a readable confirmation process, and a practical way to keep an encrypted backup off the computer. It is less suitable when you need a very large catalog of chains or a QR-only air-gapped routine.
Keystone: QR transfers and a large touchscreen
Keystone’s approach is built around keeping transaction data transfer visible. Its documentation describes open-source firmware, a 4-inch touchscreen, animated QR communication, microSD compatibility, Secure Element hardware, and PSBT support for Bitcoin multisig.
How QR signing works
- Create an unsigned transaction in a compatible companion wallet.
- Display the transaction’s animated QR sequence on the phone or computer.
- Scan the sequence with Keystone and review the destination, amount, fee, and account on the device.
- Approve only after the on-device details match your intended transaction.
- Let Keystone display the signed transaction as a QR sequence.
- Scan that sequence back into the companion wallet and broadcast it from the connected device.
Keystone says QR transmission lets you verify each data transfer and is designed to prevent sensitive information from leaking during the exchange. The security benefit depends on checking the device screen and using a trusted companion wallet; scanning without reviewing the details defeats the point of the workflow.

- More than just crypto: confirm your device is authentic with Genuine Check, manage all your logins with Ledger Security Key, detect common scams with Transaction Check and more.
- Industry-defining security: battle-tested by the Donjon's white hat hackers, protected by the Secure Element, and powered by Ledger OS.
- Connect effortlessly with Ledger Wallet: pair your secure Ledger signer with the all in one Ledger Wallet crypto app to manage thousands of digital assets across multiple devices and accounts with Ledger Sync from a single, secure dashboard.
- Playful, user-friendly design: monitor the market, compare rates and Clear Sign all transactions on the secure 2.8'' anti-glare, scratch-resistant touchscreen.
- This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.
Desktop-wallet and multisig compatibility
MicroSD support can be useful with desktop wallets such as Electrum and Wasabi, particularly when you do not want to maintain a live USB connection. For Bitcoin multisig, Keystone documents PSBT support. Before committing funds, confirm that your chosen coordinator can export and import the PSBT format and that every cosigner can independently verify the same transaction.
Best use case
Keystone is a strong fit when you want a large, readable display and a clearly separated signing process. It asks more of the user than a plug-and-play mobile workflow: you must understand QR scanning, companion-wallet compatibility, and the recovery procedure.
COLDCARD: a Bitcoin-only specialist
COLDCARD is designed for Bitcoin holders who are willing to give up multi-asset support in exchange for a highly isolated signing model. Its official comparison presents the device as a Bitcoin-only alternative to Trezor and highlights fully air-gapped operation, verifiable source code, anti-phishing words, on-screen destination verification, and advanced multisig controls.
Air-gapped operation
A fully air-gapped setup keeps the signing device disconnected from networks and can use removable storage or QR-based transaction exchange, depending on the model and workflow. The online computer prepares an unsigned transaction; the COLDCARD signs it offline; the signed transaction returns to the online computer for broadcast. Keep the roles separate and never connect the signing device merely for convenience.
Anti-phishing and coercion features
COLDCARD documents anti-phishing words that help identify an unexpected login screen. Its comparison also lists a duress PIN that opens a decoy wallet under coercion, a brick-me PIN that can destroy the device on demand, and a countdown login that can brick the device after tampering. These are specialized controls, not substitutes for a properly protected recovery phrase. Understand exactly what each feature does before enabling it, because a mistake can make funds inaccessible.
Destination verification and multisig
On-screen destination verification lets you compare the receiving address shown by the device with the address you intended to use. For multisig, document every cosigner, derivation path, quorum, and backup location. A single missing cosigner backup or mismatched policy can prevent recovery even when every individual key is intact.
When not to choose it
Do not select COLDCARD if you need Ethereum, ERC-20, Cardano, Litecoin, or other non-Bitcoin assets. Bitcoin-only specialization is its defining constraint, not a limitation that can be solved with a software update.

Choose by portfolio and threat model
If you hold many chains and tokens
Shortlist Ledger first. Make a written asset list, identify the required companion wallet for each asset, and verify that the exact network and token standard are supported before sending funds. If an asset requires a third-party wallet, confirm that wallet’s own recovery and update practices.

If you hold only Bitcoin and want the simplest focused device
Compare the Bitcoin-only BitBox02 Nova with COLDCARD. BitBox emphasizes a compact USB-C experience and an optional encrypted SD-card backup. COLDCARD emphasizes air-gapped operation, Bitcoin-specific verification, and advanced multisig and anti-coercion controls. Choose based on whether convenience or maximum isolation is your priority.
If you use Bitcoin multisig
Keystone and COLDCARD deserve special attention. Keystone documents PSBT multisig support and QR or microSD transfer. COLDCARD documents advanced multisig controls. In either case, test a complete spend and recovery with a small amount before funding the vault.
If you are worried about a compromised computer
Favor a workflow that lets the device independently display and verify the transaction. Keystone’s QR process and COLDCARD’s air-gapped model reduce direct communication with the online computer, while any hardware wallet can provide meaningful protection only when you check the address and amount on the device.
If recovery simplicity is your deciding factor
Choose the backup method you can reliably protect and restore. BitBox02 Nova’s encrypted SD-card option may be convenient, but you still need a secure recovery phrase. For multisig, document the policy and every cosigner backup; a phrase alone is not enough to recreate a multisignature wallet.
Safe setup and first transfer
- Buy through an official channel. Inspect packaging and the device for tampering. Do not initialize a wallet with a recovery phrase supplied on a card or in a message.
- Install only the manufacturer’s current application or a documented compatible wallet. Confirm the application name and download source before connecting the device.
- Initialize the device yourself. Let it generate the recovery material. Never use a phrase generated by a website, support agent, seller, or another person.
- Record the recovery phrase offline. Write it exactly as displayed, keep it away from cameras and cloud storage, and store it where unauthorized people cannot reach it.
- Complete the device’s verification check. Most hardware wallets make you confirm words or settings on the device. Do not skip this step.
- Enable an additional passphrase or specialized security feature only if you understand recovery. A forgotten passphrase or incorrectly configured decoy or delay feature can make a wallet appear empty.
- Install the required asset applications and companion wallets. Match the network and token standard exactly; similar names do not guarantee compatibility.
- Send a small test transaction. Verify the receiving address on the hardware-wallet screen, wait for the expected confirmation, and only then transfer the remainder.
- Practice recovery before storing a large balance. Use a spare device or a controlled test, then confirm that the restored addresses match the originals.
Common mistakes and recovery paths
The address on the computer differs from the device
Stop. Treat the device display as authoritative and cancel the transaction. Malware can replace a copied address. Re-open the receiving screen in the companion wallet, generate a new address if necessary, and verify every character or visual checksum the hardware wallet provides.
A supposedly supported asset is missing
Check whether support is native or requires a third-party wallet. Confirm the network, token standard, account type, and firmware or application version documented by the manufacturer. Do not import the recovery phrase into a random web wallet to “unlock” the asset.
The recovery phrase restores an empty account
First verify that every word was recorded correctly and in the correct order. Then check whether an additional passphrase, different derivation path, account type, or multisig policy was used. For multisig, confirm that all cosigner keys and the original quorum are present.
Recommended Free Tools
A QR or microSD transfer fails
Use the exact companion-wallet integration documented for the device. Regenerate the unsigned transaction, scan the complete QR sequence without interruption, or safely eject and reinsert the microSD card. Never approve a transaction that you cannot review fully on the hardware wallet.
Someone claiming to be support asks for the phrase
End the conversation. Legitimate support cannot use your recovery phrase to diagnose a device. Move funds to a newly initialized wallet if the phrase was exposed, and treat the old wallet as compromised.
