For female pattern hair loss, topical minoxidil has the strongest support among the options covered here: the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) calls it the most-recommended treatment, and the NHS also lists it. No natural remedy or supplement is established as a reliable general cure for regrowth. Because thinning can have several causes, identifying what is behind it is the first step.
First, find out what is causing the hair loss
Female pattern hair loss often appears as a widening part or gradual thinning across the scalp. It is hereditary, may be influenced by hormones, and is especially common from midlife onward. But other types of hair loss can look similar, and they may need different treatment. The AAD recommends seeing a dermatologist to identify the cause; depending on the situation, an evaluation may include an examination, blood tests or a scalp biopsy. Read the AAD’s guidance on female pattern hair loss.

Hair loss can also occur in connection with medical conditions, stress, medical treatment, shedding after childbirth, or inadequate iron, protein or calories. These are not interchangeable diagnoses: treating an underlying cause may be more appropriate than using a treatment intended for pattern loss. The AAD’s hair-loss guidance and the NHS guidance for women describe some of these contexts.

| Option | What the evidence supports | Important limits and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Topical minoxidil | The AAD calls it the most-recommended treatment for female pattern hair loss, and the NHS lists it for female pattern baldness. The AAD identifies 2% and 5% products approved for this use in the United States. A 2012 Cochrane summary of six studies found moderate-to-marked regrowth in 157 of 593 participants using minoxidil, compared with 77 of 555 using placebo (risk ratio 1.93; 95% confidence interval 1.51 to 2.47); the evidence was rated moderate quality. | It may take six to 12 months to judge the effect. Temporary increased shedding and scalp irritation can occur, as can unwanted facial hair. Continued use is generally needed to maintain benefit. The AAD advises avoiding it during pregnancy, when planning pregnancy, and while breastfeeding. Follow the local product label and a clinician’s advice. |
| Prescription medicines, including spironolactone and other antiandrogens | A dermatologist may prescribe certain medicines off-label for female pattern hair loss. | They require a clinician’s assessment. The AAD warns that these medicines may cause birth defects and are not options during pregnancy or when planning pregnancy; discuss contraception and individual risks with a clinician. |
| At-home low-level laser devices | Some studies suggest possible benefit. The AAD notes that FDA-cleared devices are available in the United States. | Ongoing use may be needed. Long-term safety and sustained hair-growth effects remain uncertain; FDA clearance is not a guarantee of regrowth. |
| Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) | Preliminary findings show promise. | Research is at an early stage, and further studies are needed to establish safety and effectiveness for female pattern hair loss. |
| Supplements | A clinician may recommend correcting a documented nutrient deficiency. | Evidence for marketed hair-growth supplements is mixed. Excess nutrients can be harmful, and some have been linked with hair loss. The FDA does not review dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are sold. |
| Hair-loss shampoos | They may help retain moisture, make hair look fuller or reduce breakage. | They cannot regrow hair or prevent the underlying loss from worsening. |
| Hair transplant | It may be an option for selected people with pattern loss and suitable donor hair. | Not everyone is a candidate; suitability requires specialist assessment. |
The treatment details in this table come from the AAD’s patient guidance, except the pooled trial figures, which are from the Cochrane review summary. The AAD’s minoxidil approval statement refers to the United States. Product labels, availability and prescribing rules vary by location.

What to know before trying minoxidil
Minoxidil is a treatment for female pattern hair loss, not a fix for every cause of shedding or thinning. The AAD says it can take six to 12 months to assess whether it is working. Some people have temporary increased shedding when they start, and scalp irritation or unwanted facial hair can occur. Benefit generally requires continued use; stopping can mean losing the benefit. The AAD advises pregnant people, those planning pregnancy and those who are breastfeeding to avoid minoxidil. Check the instructions for the specific product available where you live and ask a clinician whether it fits your diagnosis and circumstances. AAD: female pattern hair loss and treatment.
Minoxidil products and their approved uses differ by jurisdiction. The AAD identifies 2% and 5% products as approved for female pattern hair loss in the United States; that should not be taken as a statement about approval or directions in every country. The NHS also lists minoxidil as a treatment for female pattern baldness in the UK. NHS: hair loss.

Do natural remedies or supplements regrow hair?
The official guidance reviewed here does not establish a natural remedy as a reliable general treatment for female pattern hair loss. Supplement studies are mixed, and the AAD says most supplements in the studies it describes had no effect on hair growth or thickness. A single study described by the AAD involved 120 healthy women taking a particular combination of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and antioxidants for six months; participants saw thicker hair and less loss. The AAD says the result needs to be replicated before that supplement can be recommended. It is not evidence that ordinary supplements, or a particular retail product, will work. AAD: female pattern hair loss.
If a deficiency is suspected, a clinician can decide whether testing is appropriate and whether correcting it makes sense. Taking supplements without guidance is not risk-free: the AAD notes that too much selenium, vitamin A or vitamin E has been linked to hair loss, and supplements can interact with medicines. The FDA does not review supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are sold. AAD: tips for managing hair loss.

How to choose a treatment safely
- Establish the likely cause. Ask a dermatologist or other qualified clinician whether the pattern fits female pattern hair loss or whether another cause should be considered.
- Match the option to the diagnosis. Minoxidil is the best-supported general treatment in the sources here for female pattern hair loss; other causes may call for addressing an underlying condition or deficiency instead.
- Review safety before starting. Discuss pregnancy or plans for pregnancy, breastfeeding, other medicines and relevant health conditions with a clinician. This is particularly important for minoxidil and prescription antiandrogens.
- Set a realistic assessment period. For minoxidil, the AAD says six to 12 months may be needed to judge effect. Follow the specific product’s local label rather than assuming every formulation has the same directions.
- Weigh burden and uncertainty. Consider application or treatment demands, whether continued use is needed, evidence strength, local approval and cost. The sources cited here do not provide a current cost comparison.
No treatment guarantees a result. The NHS puts it plainly: “No treatment is 100% effective.” NHS: hair loss.
