Treat them as a shortlist, and check current availability and regional pricing before buying.
Which travel router suits your setup?
A travel router can connect to a hotel or public network and share that connection through a private Wi-Fi network for your phone, laptop, and other devices. The available connection modes vary by model, so confirm that the router can join the kind of connection you expect to use, such as hotel Ethernet, public Wi-Fi, or tethering.

Compact Wi-Fi 6: GL.iNet Beryl AX (GL-MT3000)
The Beryl AX is a pocketable Wi-Fi 6 option with a 2.5G WAN port and USB 3.0, according to GL.iNet’s product specifications. RTINGS says it has better range than the Slate AX in its comparison: RTINGS’ Beryl AX and Slate AX comparison. That comparison is useful for those two Wi-Fi 6 routers, not a common test of every candidate here.
GL.iNet lists maximum band rates of 574 Mbps on 2.4GHz and 2402 Mbps on 5GHz, plus VPN throughput of up to 150 Mbps with OpenVPN and up to 300 Mbps with WireGuard. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified real-world results or guaranteed speeds. See the Beryl AX product page for the model’s specifications.

More wired ports and storage: GL.iNet Slate AX (GL-AXT1800)
Consider the Slate AX if you value wired connections and onboard storage. RTINGS describes it as having three 1Gbps Ethernet ports, USB 3.0, and a microSD slot. It is an older Wi-Fi 6 model, with the Slate 7 as a newer Wi-Fi 7 option in the same product family. Its extra ports distinguish it from the Beryl AX, while RTINGS favors the Beryl AX for range in their comparison.
Newer Wi-Fi 7: GL.iNet Beryl 7
TechRadar’s review, published September 8, 2026, describes the Beryl 7 as a pocketable Wi-Fi 7 router with VPN support and USB-C power. The review material available here does not establish comparable head-to-head performance against all the other models in this guide. Check the exact power requirements and included adapter before planning to run it from a portable power source.

Wi-Fi 7, but without 6GHz: GL.iNet Slate 7 (GL-BE3600)
TechRadar reports that the Slate 7 supports 4K QAM and Multi-Link Operation (MLO), but does not include a 6GHz band. Wi-Fi 7 by itself therefore does not tell you which bands a particular travel router supports. Check the model’s band specifications if 6GHz matters to you, and verify the USB-C power requirements and included adapter for your intended setup.
Alternative Wi-Fi 7 design: TP-Link Roam 7
TechRadar reports that the Roam 7 has fold-flat antennas and measures 126 × 93.5 × 36mm, with a weight of 250g. Those dimensions and weight can help you judge how it fits in your luggage, but they do not establish how its performance compares with the other candidates.

What to check before choosing a travel router
- Connection method: Confirm whether the router can connect to the hotel Ethernet, public Wi-Fi, or tethering arrangement you plan to use.
- Wi-Fi generation and bands: Check the actual supported bands rather than assuming a newer Wi-Fi generation guarantees 6GHz.
- Ethernet: Match the WAN and LAN port count and speeds to your wired devices and hotel connection. The Slate AX, for example, has three 1Gbps Ethernet ports; the Beryl AX has a 2.5G WAN port.
- Size and power: Check dimensions, weight, USB-C power requirements, and whether the needed adapter is included. Do not assume that one model’s power accessories fit another.
- VPN: Confirm the VPN protocol and provider compatibility, and distinguish a router’s VPN client feature from a VPN service subscription. A router feature does not by itself provide a provider account.
- Setup: Check whether the configuration process fits your comfort level, particularly if you expect to connect through captive portals or switch often between network types.
- Price and stock: Verify current pricing and availability for your region; neither should be inferred from an older listing or another market’s price.
Do you need a travel router with a VPN?
A router with a VPN client can route connected devices through a VPN service, but the feature is not the same thing as a VPN subscription. Before choosing a model for this purpose, check that your provider supports a protocol the router can use and that your account covers the intended service. GL.iNet’s Beryl AX page lists provider selection and model-specific throughput claims; its figures are vendor claims rather than independent measurements.
Is a Wi-Fi 7 travel router worth it?
Wi-Fi 7 may be appealing if you want a newer generation, but the label alone is not enough to decide. The Slate 7, for example, lacks 6GHz despite its Wi-Fi 7 designation, while TechRadar describes the Beryl 7 as pocketable and USB-C powered. Compare supported bands, ports, size, power, and the network types you actually use. The available sources do not provide one shared test protocol to establish that a Wi-Fi 7 candidate is universally faster or better for travel than the Wi-Fi 6 options.

- 【PROTECT YOUR NETWORK SECURITY】Our pocket wifi, unlike other vulnerable portable wifi hotspot for travel purposes supports WPA3 protocol–Preventive measures against password brute-force attacks; DNS over HTTPS & DNS over TLS–Protecting domain name system traffic and preventing data eavesdropping from malicious parties; IPv6–Built-in authentication for privacy protection, eliminating the need for network address translation.
- 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.
Beryl AX or Slate AX: what is the difference?
The Beryl AX is the more compact-oriented pick in this shortlist, with a 2.5G WAN port; RTINGS says it has better range than the Slate AX. The Slate AX is the ports-and-storage choice, with three 1Gbps Ethernet ports, USB 3.0, and microSD storage, as described by RTINGS. Choose based on whether range and the Beryl’s WAN port or the Slate’s additional Ethernet and storage matter more to your setup.
