Best Toys for Autistic Toddlers: How to Choose for Play and Learning

There is no single best toy for every autistic toddler, and no toy is established as a treatment or guaranteed way to improve development. The best starting point is a toy the child enjoys and can use safely, matched to their abilities and sensory preferences. Play can offer opportunities to explore, create and connect with a caregiver—but it does not need to teach a specific skill to be worthwhile.

How to choose toys for an autistic toddler

Use the child, not an autism-specific checklist, as your guide. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends choosing toys that fit a child’s developmental abilities and considering whether a caregiver can join the play. Its guidance covers young children broadly, including children with developmental delays or disabilities; it does not rank toys for autistic toddlers or establish that any product improves autism-related outcomes. • Start with interest: Notice what the child chooses, returns to or explores in their own way. Offer a toy as an invitation, not a demand.
  • Check developmental fit: Consider what the child can comfortably grasp, move, see, hear and activate. A therapist or pediatrician can suggest adaptations, such as easier-to-grip or easier-to-activate features.
  • Consider sensory preferences and access: Think about the toy’s sound, light, texture and movement, along with the child’s motor or visual access. A feature one toddler enjoys may be uncomfortable or hard to use for another.
  • Make room for shared play: Choose something a caregiver can enjoy alongside the child, while allowing the child to lead or play independently.
  • Prioritize safety: Check age guidance, small parts and choking hazards. Supervise when the toy or the child’s play calls for it.

Toy ideas by kind of play

These are options to try, not prescriptions or a ranked list. A simple toy can support enjoyable interaction without being electronic, expensive or designed to teach.

Toy idea Ways to play What to consider
Blocks Stack, sort, build, knock down or build together; blocks offer hands-on problem-solving opportunities. Choose pieces the child can handle safely. Avoid pieces that pose a choking risk.
Puzzles Explore shapes and fit pieces, alone or with a caregiver. Look for pieces that suit the child’s motor and visual abilities; check for small parts.
Dolls, toy animals and pretend-play objects Make up scenes, imitate everyday activities or explore objects in the child’s own way. Follow the child’s lead. Pretend play need not look a particular way to be enjoyable.
Books Share a story, look at pictures or revisit favorite pages together. Let the child set the pace; a shared book does not need to be read from cover to cover.
Crayons and paper Make marks, explore colors and create together. The CDC includes crayons and paper among examples for child-led play. Use age-appropriate materials and supervise as needed.
Balls and push-pull toys Explore movement, roll or push a toy, or take turns if the child enjoys it. Consider the available space, the child’s mobility and whether movement or sound is comfortable.

Let the child lead the play

Child-led play means following the child’s attention and responding warmly rather than directing every move toward a lesson. You can join by watching, copying an action, offering a turn or naming something the child is focused on. Pause if the child wants space, and do not require a particular kind of play for the activity to count as successful. The CDC recommends age-appropriate, safe toys for child-led play. The AAP describes play with caregivers as an opportunity for interaction and development, not as a promise that a specific product will produce a specific result. Alan L. Mendelsohn, M.D., FAAP, told AAP News: “The goal is to have high quality, bonding, warm time together as they play, rather than looking for the toy to advance the child’s development in some way.” AAP News: Toy-buying tips for children with special needs.

When to ask for tailored suggestions

If a toy is difficult to grasp, see, hear or operate, ask the child’s therapist or pediatrician for ideas suited to their needs. They may be able to suggest a different toy or an adaptation. There is no need to replace a toy simply because a child plays with it repeatedly or in an unexpected way; what matters here is whether the child is comfortable, engaged and safe.
