Start with Touhou Luna Nights if you want the safest first purchase. Nintendo presents it as a Metroidvania built around exploration and action, so it introduces Touhou through map exploration, upgrades and platforming instead of asking you to master a pure vertical shooter immediately. Choose Touhou: New World if RPG progression and character building matter most. Choose Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity if you prefer 3D action and straightforward controls.
The short answer: which Touhou game should you play first?
For most newcomers, Touhou Luna Nights is the best entry point on Nintendo Switch. Its structure is easier to understand than a traditional bullet-hell shooter: explore an area, learn its movement and combat, find upgrades, and return to challenging encounters with more knowledge and equipment. Nintendo describes it as a Metroidvania with a heavy emphasis on exploration and action. It is a single-player Switch release from Team Ladybug and Alliance Arts, released on December 17, 2020.

That recommendation is about accessibility, not a promise that the game is easy. Touhou boss encounters still use demanding projectile patterns, so you will need to observe attacks, move deliberately and retry fights. The exploration format gives a beginner more context and more ways to make progress between attempts.

Touhou: New World is the better first game for someone who specifically wants an RPG. Nintendo calls it a “bullet hell action-RPG adventure,” while XSEED describes a combination of stage-filling bullet hell and action-RPG battles. Skills, spell cards, stat upgrades and customizable builds give you more long-term decisions than Luna Nights, but those systems also create a steeper learning load.

Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity suits players who want 3D presentation and simple controls. Nintendo Canada lists it as a fan-made 3D bullet-hell action RPG with “simple, responsive controls.” Its camera and spatial movement make it a different introduction from the two-dimensional exploration and combat of the other recommendations.
What each game is trying to be
Touhou Luna Nights: the exploration-first introduction
A Metroidvania combines action with an interconnected map. Instead of moving through only a sequence of isolated stages, you learn the layout, discover places you cannot yet reach, and use progression to make further exploration possible. That structure provides a natural rhythm for a newcomer: explore, encounter resistance, improve, and try again.
Nintendo’s description emphasizes both exploration and action. In practical terms, that means the game asks you to learn movement and combat at the same time, rather than treating bullet patterns as the entire experience. If you enjoy finding routes and upgrades, the format can make repeated attempts feel productive even when a boss stops you.
The main caveat is that Metroidvania accessibility does not remove Touhou’s challenge. Bosses can still demand precise movement and pattern recognition. Select it because you want a welcoming structure around the action, not because you expect an automatic beginner mode.
Touhou: New World: the progression-heavy option
New World uses an action-RPG framework around Touhou’s bullet-hell identity. Nintendo highlights skills, spell cards, stat upgrades and customizable builds, and XSEED describes the game as combining stage-filling bullet hell with action-RPG battles.

That makes it a strong choice when you enjoy deciding how a character develops. You can approach progression as an experiment: learn which abilities fit your preferred way of moving and attacking, then adjust your build when a fight exposes a weakness. The trade-off is cognitive overhead. A newcomer is learning projectile patterns, real-time movement and a set of RPG systems at once.
The Nintendo page includes a July 10, 2024 DLC listing. Treat that date as a listing reference rather than evidence of a particular amount of post-launch content or a current bundle; the available material does not establish those details.

Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity: 3D action with a simple-control pitch
Scarlet Curiosity is described by Nintendo Canada as a fan-made 3D bullet-hell action RPG. The same listing specifically calls out “simple, responsive controls,” which is the clearest beginner signal among the three recommendations.
Its 3D presentation changes how you read danger. In a two-dimensional shooter or side-view action game, threats are usually organized on a flat plane. A 3D action game asks you to understand position, camera perspective and movement through space. Players who find that more intuitive than a flat screen may prefer it immediately; players who want the classic vertical-shooter viewpoint may find it less familiar.
The game is fan-made, and Nintendo’s wording identifies it as based on Touhou Project. That distinguishes it from the numbered mainline shooters traditionally associated with the series while still placing it within the Touhou world.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Side-by-side comparison for first-time players
| Game | Best fit | Format described by the publisher | What a beginner learns | Primary caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Touhou Luna Nights | First Touhou purchase; players who like exploration | Metroidvania focused on exploration and action | Map navigation, platforming, upgrades and boss-pattern reading | Boss patterns can still be demanding |
| Touhou: New World | RPG fans who want builds and progression | Bullet-hell action RPG with skills, spell cards, stat upgrades and customizable builds | Real-time dodging plus ability and stat decisions | More systems to learn than Luna Nights |
| Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity | Players who want 3D action and straightforward controls | Fan-made 3D bullet-hell action RPG with simple, responsive controls | Spatial movement, camera awareness and action-RPG combat | Its 3D format differs from the mainline shooter style |
All three recommendations are Switch spin-offs or fan-made games documented in Nintendo or XSEED material. None should be treated as a substitute for the numbered Touhou bullet-hell games traditionally associated with PC. If your priority is a pure vertical shooter, confirm the genre on the current regional store page before buying.
Choose by the kind of learning you prefer
Pick exploration when you want progress between difficult fights
Choose Luna Nights when you like moving through a connected world, checking previously inaccessible areas and seeing upgrades change what you can do. This is the most forgiving structure for a player who does not yet know how Touhou patterns work, because the game’s appeal is not limited to surviving one uninterrupted sequence of stages.
Pick RPG systems when customization is the attraction
Choose New World when you enjoy comparing skills, spell cards, statistics and builds. The additional systems are useful if you like solving a fight by changing your setup rather than relying only on faster reactions. They are less suitable if menus and character-building choices usually distract you from the action.
Pick 3D action when camera and spatial movement feel natural
Choose Scarlet Curiosity when you want an action RPG that presents Touhou in three dimensions and advertises simple, responsive controls. This is a format decision more than a difficulty guarantee: the controls may be straightforward, while the bullet-hell demands still require practice.
Choose based on your tolerance for repeated attempts
Bullet hell means that attacks can fill substantial portions of the play area. Success usually comes from recognizing a pattern, identifying safe movement and repeating the encounter until the response becomes consistent. If you dislike retrying a boss, start with the game whose surrounding structure you find most motivating. Exploration favors players who want to investigate; RPG progression favors players who want to adjust a build; 3D action favors players who prefer direct movement through space.

What “beginner-friendly” means in Touhou
There is no single beginner profile. A person new to Touhou but experienced with Metroidvanias may find Luna Nights immediately readable. An RPG player may understand New World faster because skills and statistics provide familiar goals. Someone who struggles with side-view movement may prefer Scarlet Curiosity’s 3D presentation.
In all three games, separate two skills:
- Survival: reading incoming projectiles, finding a safe route and moving without panic.
- Progression: learning the map, selecting abilities or understanding how the game’s systems improve your character.
A game can make progression accessible while leaving survival demanding. That is why “simple controls” should not be interpreted as “low difficulty,” and why a larger set of upgrades does not automatically make a bullet-hell encounter easy.
A practical first-session routine
- Spend the opening session learning movement without trying to play aggressively. Confirm how your character accelerates, stops and changes direction.
- Watch an attack pattern for a few seconds before committing to damage. Your first goal is to identify where the safe space appears.
- Keep your movements small when possible. Large, panicked movements make it harder to return to a safe position.
- After a failed attempt, name the specific cause: a missed visual cue, an overextended attack, an unfamiliar camera angle or a build that does not suit your style.
- Change one variable at a time. If you alter movement, equipment and abilities simultaneously, you will not know which change solved the problem.
This routine is genre guidance rather than a claim about a particular boss or control layout. The exact options and button assignments should be checked in the game’s own settings and tutorial screens.

Starting Touhou Luna Nights
- Begin on the standard settings offered by the Switch release rather than changing several options before you understand the baseline.
- Explore deliberately. When a route appears blocked, note it and continue investigating instead of repeatedly forcing the same encounter.
- Use the game’s upgrade and exploration loop to build familiarity with movement before treating every boss as a test of reflexes.
- When a boss defeats you, replay the approach and focus on one pattern at a time. The aim is to learn the sequence, not to improvise through the entire fight.
This approach matches Nintendo’s emphasis on exploration and action and is why Luna Nights is the default recommendation for a first purchase.
Starting Touhou: New World
- Learn the basic action controls before spending time optimizing a build. A powerful setup cannot compensate for not knowing how to move through incoming fire.
- Read each skill, spell-card and stat description as you obtain it. Treat the first build as a learning tool, not a permanent commitment.
- Change only one part of the build after a failed fight. This makes it easier to tell whether the issue was damage, survivability, ability timing or movement.
- Keep a simple record of what helped. The game’s customization is valuable only when it reduces confusion rather than creating a new menu to manage.
The additional systems are the reason to choose New World, but they are also the reason it is not the simplest introduction of the three.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Starting Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity
- Adjust the camera and movement until the view feels comfortable before concentrating on damage output.
- Practice keeping your character visible while tracking incoming projectiles. In 3D, losing positional awareness can be as costly as missing a timing cue.
- Use the advertised simple, responsive controls as a foundation: make short, intentional inputs and observe how the character responds.
- Do not judge the game against a vertical shooter. Evaluate whether you enjoy navigating a 3D action space and managing threats from that perspective.
The 3D format is the defining choice here. It can be the easiest way into Touhou for one player and the least familiar for another.
Digital, physical and regional purchase details
Touhou Luna Nights availability
Nintendo lists a digital Nintendo Switch release for Touhou Luna Nights dated December 17, 2020. The same listing names English, French, German, Korean and Simplified Chinese support. Language availability can vary by storefront presentation, so check the regional eShop page on the account you will use before purchasing.
A MeriStation report dated July 31, 2025 described a five-year physical collector edition released by Selecta Play in Spain for €89.99 at the time of publication. The reported package included the game, a manual, a steelbook, two soundtrack CDs, an authenticity seal and alternate covers. That price, contents and stock are historical; verify current availability and the exact package with an authorized retailer before paying a premium.
New World and Scarlet Curiosity listings
The supplied Nintendo and XSEED material establishes the games as Nintendo Switch titles, but it does not establish a universal physical edition, current price or stock position for every region. Storefronts can differ by country and can change their listings, so use the current Nintendo eShop page for your region to confirm format, language, edition and any included content.
Do not infer that a collector package, a discount or a particular DLC bundle is available simply because another region or an older listing mentions it. The July 10, 2024 date attached to a New World DLC listing is a reference point, not a guarantee of what your store currently sells.
Common mistakes first-time buyers make
- Buying by the Touhou name alone: The three Switch options use different structures. Read the genre description before assuming you are getting a numbered shooter.
- Confusing simple controls with simple difficulty: Responsive inputs help you execute a decision; they do not remove projectile patterns.
- Choosing the most feature-rich game by default: Skills, spell cards and statistics are valuable only if you enjoy managing them.
- Ignoring camera preference: A 3D action RPG and a two-dimensional exploration game ask you to read space differently.
- Paying a collector premium without checking the date: The €89.99 Luna Nights figure was reported for Spain on July 31, 2025 and may not reflect today’s stock or price.
- Expecting a pure vertical shooter: These recommendations are spin-offs or fan-made Switch games, not replacements for the traditional numbered PC releases.
A simple decision tree
- Do you want exploration and action more than character-building? Choose Touhou Luna Nights.
- Do skills, spell cards, stats and customizable builds sound like the main attraction? Choose Touhou: New World.
- Do you specifically want 3D movement and a simple-control pitch? Choose Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity.
- Do you want a classic vertical shooter above all else? Pause before buying and verify the genre of the Switch listing; none of these descriptions promises the numbered mainline format.
Verdict
Touhou Luna Nights is the best all-purpose starting point because its exploration-and-action structure gives newcomers more to learn than bullet-pattern survival alone. Touhou: New World is the specialist recommendation for RPG players willing to learn more systems, and Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity is the specialist recommendation for players who want 3D action with straightforward controls. Pick the format you already understand, then treat bullet-hell survival as a skill you build through observation and repetition.
