For a fast inclusion check, start with Bechdel Test Scripts. It accepts a screenplay excerpt or a full script, parses standard screenplay formatting, identifies named female characters and their speaking lines, and reports whether at least two named women speak to each other about something other than a man. Use Plotmuse Script Analytics when you need percentages of dialogue by character, scene presence, character-profile audits, and broader gender or demographic metrics. StudioBinder and Film Logic are better suited to production breakdowns, while BechdelScript and ScripThreads serve technical or research-heavy analysis.
No automated report can determine representation perfectly. Treat gender labels and dialogue counts as a structured first pass, then read the flagged scenes yourself—especially when scripts contain aliases, unnamed speakers, non-binary characters, dialect, deliberate ambiguity, or characters whose identities change.

What “dialogue tracking” actually measures
Screenplay tools use several different units, and they are not interchangeable. A result that says one character has 30% of the dialogue may count lines or words; it does not automatically mean that character speaks for 30% of the finished film.

Lines
A line count usually means one dialogue block attributed to a character in screenplay format. It is quick to compare, but a one-word reply and a page-long speech can each count as one line. Ask the tool or documentation whether it counts dialogue blocks, spoken sentences, or another unit.

Words
Word counts better reflect how much text a character is given, yet they still do not equal screen time. Pauses, overlapping speech, scene direction, delivery speed, and editing alter the duration of spoken material.
Scenes and presence
Scene presence records where a character appears, whether or not the character speaks. A scene-by-scene presence view can expose a character who has many appearances but little dialogue, or a character whose dialogue is concentrated in one sequence.
Speaking time
Actual speaking time requires a finished audiovisual work or a timing model. The Geena Davis Institute’s GD-IQ project describes dividing movies into shots, detecting who is on camera, and applying automatic speech detection that classifies the speaker as female or male. A screenplay parser alone cannot observe pauses, overlapping delivery, or final editing.

Some systems infer gender from character names, descriptions, or dialogue context; others rely on labels entered by the analyst. A binary male/female field cannot represent every character. Keep a human-reviewed mapping for non-binary, transgender, unnamed, disguised, intentionally fluid, or uncertain characters.

| Scene presence | Tracking appearances and access to story spaces | Whether a character drives the scene |
| Screen or speaking time | Analysis of a filmed or timed cut | Why a disparity exists or whether a scene is meaningful |
| Gender or demographic labels | Aggregate representation reporting | A character’s full identity, expression, or narrative function |

Bechdel Test Scripts: the quickest pass/fail baseline
Choose this when your immediate question is, “Does the script give named women an independent conversation?” The service’s stated test looks for at least two named female characters who talk to each other about something other than a man. It also exposes the female characters, their speaking lines, interaction partners, and the scenes in which the exchanges occur.

What you get
- A result tied to a recognizable Bechdel-style rule rather than an unexplained score.
- Character extraction for named female roles and their dialogue.
- Scene-level information that lets you locate the exchange in the draft.
- Support for a pasted excerpt or a complete screenplay.
How to use the result responsibly
- Submit the excerpt or full script in standard screenplay formatting.
- Review the extracted names and confirm that aliases, married names, nicknames, and revised character names were not split into separate people.
- Open every scene used for the result and read the surrounding action and dialogue.
- Record the result as one criterion, not as a verdict on the script’s overall gender equity.
A pass can consist of a short exchange with little narrative importance; a fail can occur in a script with complex, well-developed women whose conversations do not meet the rule. The test is valuable precisely because it asks a narrow, auditable question.
Plotmuse Script Analytics: broader dialogue and representation metrics
Plotmuse is the closest documented match for writers who want more than a single pass/fail result. Its guide describes the percentage of dialogue lines belonging to each character, scene-by-scene screen-time presence, character-profile audits, Bechdel-Wallace testing, and gender or demographic balance metrics.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsQuestions it can help answer
- Which characters receive the largest share of dialogue?
- Are women present across the story or concentrated in a few scenes?
- Do supporting characters appear regularly but speak very little?
- How do gender or demographic distributions change by scene or character group?
- Where do quantitative patterns merit a close reading?
Read “screen-time presence” carefully: in a screenplay context it may describe where a character is present in scenes, not measured seconds in a locked picture edit. The cited feature description does not establish a laboratory accuracy rate, and no independent benchmark is supplied. Export or save the underlying scene and character details whenever possible so another reader can audit how the percentage was produced.
StudioBinder and Film Logic: turn analysis into a production breakdown
StudioBinder
StudioBinder’s documented behavior is to assign cast IDs automatically when characters have dialogue in a scene. That is useful after an inclusion review, because the same character-and-scene mapping can feed production organization. It should not be treated as a gender-analysis engine simply because it identifies speaking roles.
Film Logic
Film Logic imports FDX, PDF, or FLS scripts and carries scene headings, characters, and locations into breakdown reports, boards, and call sheets. Select it when the practical need is to connect dialogue-bearing characters to scheduling and production documents. Perform the gender and conversation analysis separately, then verify that imported character names match the analytical labels.

When to use a production tool
- The script is moving into scheduling, budgeting, casting, or call-sheet preparation.
- You need scene headings, locations, and character data in operational reports.
- You want to preserve a production-ready record after completing a representation audit.
BechdelScript and ScripThreads for technical or research workflows
BechdelScript
BechdelScript is an open-source project with separate gender, script-parsing, and topic-modeling components. Its documented labels include Woman, Man, and Non-Binary, making the label set more explicit than a strictly binary report. Technical users can inspect the components, alter assumptions, and build a repeatable pipeline, but they must validate parsing and classification against their own scripts.
ScripThreads
ScripThreads is a research-oriented visualization and analysis tool documented in Digital Humanities Quarterly. Its direct access to every screenplay line is important for auditability: a researcher can move from an aggregate visualization back to the exact text. The accompanying discussion also stresses that automated screenplay analysis has inherent limitations, so visual output should guide reading rather than replace it.
Choose by the question you need to answer
| Your question | Best starting point | Follow-up check |
|---|---|---|
| Does the script meet the Bechdel-style rule? | Bechdel Test Scripts | Read the complete flagged scenes and verify names and topics |
| How is dialogue distributed among characters? | Plotmuse Script Analytics | Confirm whether the percentage uses lines or words |
| Where does each character appear? | Plotmuse for scene presence | Check scene headings and aliases manually |
| How do I connect characters and scenes to call sheets? | StudioBinder or Film Logic | Verify imported names against the analysis |
| Can I inspect or extend the classification code? | BechdelScript | Test labels on ambiguous and non-binary characters |
| Do I need line-level research visualization? | ScripThreads | Use the source lines for close reading and citation |
A practical workflow from draft to decision
- Prepare the draft. Use a clean screenplay version, preserve character cues, and note aliases, crowd voices, voice-over, off-screen speakers, and unnamed roles before importing.
- Run the narrow test first. Use Bechdel Test Scripts to establish a quick baseline and inspect every scene it identifies.
- Measure distribution. Use Plotmuse when you need per-character dialogue shares, scene presence, profile information, or broader gender and demographic metrics.
- Normalize identities. Merge aliases only when they refer to the same person; keep intentionally distinct roles separate. Record uncertain mappings instead of silently forcing a label.
- Audit edge cases. Check unnamed women, groups, children, narrators, translated names, dialect, overlapping dialogue, and characters whose gender is not stated.
- Read the scenes. Determine whether a numerical imbalance reflects story purpose, point of view, genre convention, a draft problem, or a parsing error.
- Move to production data. If the script is entering scheduling or breakdown, import it into Film Logic or organize dialogue-bearing cast IDs in StudioBinder, then compare the production breakdown with the analytical character list.
- Save an audit trail. Keep the script version, tool name, date, label decisions, and scene references so a later draft can be compared on the same basis.
Gender classification requires a human policy
Before counting, decide what “gender” means in your project. A label inferred from a first name can be wrong; a character description can be deliberately incomplete; and a performer’s gender is not a substitute for the character’s identity. Document whether labels come from explicit script text, creator-provided metadata, analyst judgment, or an automated classifier.
Do not collapse non-binary or intentionally fluid characters into “male” or “female” merely to complete a chart. BechdelScript’s documented Woman, Man, and Non-Binary labels show one way to preserve a third category, but any fixed taxonomy remains a simplification. For ambiguous cases, report “uncertain” or explain the coding rule and include a separate sensitivity check with those cases excluded.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Input formats, privacy, and auditability
The documented input options differ. Bechdel Test Scripts accepts pasted excerpts or full scripts. Film Logic explicitly imports FDX, PDF, and FLS. The cited descriptions do not establish complete current privacy terms, processing locations, export formats, plan limits, or retention periods for the services, so confirm those items directly before uploading an unpublished screenplay.

For confidential work, prefer a workflow that lets you control storage and retain a local copy of the source and results. Regardless of tool, preserve the exact script version and the character-to-label map. A percentage without its counting rule is not reproducible.
What larger studies show—and what they do not
The USC SAIL Lab reported a 2017 analysis covering 7,000 characters and more than 53,000 dialogues across nearly 1,000 film scripts. The analysis examined gender, race, age, language tone, and relationships. This scale demonstrates why computational methods are useful for finding patterns that are difficult to see one script at a time; it does not validate the accuracy of every commercial parser.
The Geena Davis Institute’s 2015 description of GD-IQ concerns filmed movies, not screenplay text. It reports automated measurement of on-screen time and speaking time by dividing each movie into shots, detecting the person on camera, and applying automatic speech detection that classifies the speaker as female or male. Those measurements answer a different question from a draft’s line count and should not be substituted for one another.
Common failure modes and fixes
Aliases become separate characters
Symptom: one person appears as two or more low-volume roles. Fix: create an alias table before calculating totals and rerun the report.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Unnamed roles disappear
Symptom: “WOMAN,” “NURSE,” or a crowd contributes no gendered dialogue. Fix: review unnamed speakers separately and report the exclusion.
Best Value
Binary labels hide relevant characters
Symptom: every role is forced into male or female. Fix: use a non-binary or uncertain category and state how it affects totals.
Formatting breaks attribution
Symptom: dialogue is attached to action or the wrong speaker. Fix: clean character cues, parentheticals, dual dialogue, and PDF extraction artifacts, then compare a sample of scenes with the original.
A pass is mistaken for a quality score
Symptom: a single criterion is used to judge the whole script. Fix: combine the rule with dialogue distribution, scene presence, character agency, and close reading.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why close reading remains essential
Counts cannot tell you whether a character has agency, whether another character interrupts or dismisses her, whether a conversation advances the plot, or whether representation is stereotyped. Automated systems can also miss aliases, unnamed characters, revised names, dialect, context, and intentionally fluid identities. Use the numbers to choose scenes for inspection and to compare drafts under a consistent method; use human interpretation to decide what the pattern means.
