For reviewing a full match, start with League of Legends’ built-in replay in the client. To save a shareable video clip, use the client’s Highlights recorder while watching a replay. For deliberate camera moves and cinematic footage, Riot’s separate League Director tool works with replays and is documented for Windows.
Which League recording tool should you use?
| Tool | Best for | What it saves or provides | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| League client replay | Interactive review of a match | A replay viewed in the client | Riot says replays expire when the client patches and only the last 20 games are available in the client; check current behavior. |
| Built-in Highlights | Quick video clips to share or edit | Locally saved .webm video |
Captures a segment, not an interactive full-match replay. Default capture quality is 720p, according to Riot. |
| League Director | Controlled camera work and cinematic replay footage | .webm or .png capture |
Separate Windows tool with a more involved setup; it operates on replays. |
These are feature-based distinctions from Riot’s documentation, not benchmark results. For the client replay and Highlights, see Riot’s Replays FAQ & Pro-Tips; for League Director, see the RiotGames repository.

Use the League client to review a full match
A client replay is the practical starting point if you want to move around a game and inspect different moments rather than watch a fixed video. Riot’s FAQ describes downloading it from the End of Game screen using the button beside Advanced Details, or locating the match in Match History. After download, the button changes to Watch Replay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open the End of Game screen or go to Match History.
- Select the replay download button beside Advanced Details, or find the match in Match History and download it there.
- When the download finishes, select Watch Replay.
- Use the replay timeline and camera controls to revisit an event or follow a champion.
Riot’s published camera tips include switching champions with number keys or Q/W/E/R/T, pressing the same key twice to lock the camera, and holding the middle mouse button while panning. These are instructions from Riot’s FAQ, not independently tested recommendations.

Replay availability and limits
Riot’s FAQ, dated March 27, 2026, says replays last for a patch cycle and expire once the client patches up. It also says only the last 20 games are available in the client. Treat these as Riot’s published guidance and check the client for current behavior, since availability can change with releases or differ by region. The FAQ says ranked replays can be downloaded from a friend’s profile through Match History, and that in-game chat is not included.
For the exact controls and current client guidance, consult Riot’s replay FAQ.

Save a clip with built-in Highlights
Highlights turns the replay view into a conventional video clip. While watching a replay, start and stop the client’s Highlight recorder around the moment you want to keep. Unlike a replay, the resulting clip does not let you navigate the rest of the match.

- Open and watch the match replay in the League client.
- Before recording, adjust Highlight quality in-game if needed. Riot says capture defaults to 720p.
- Start the Highlight recorder and stop it after the moment you want to save.
- Find the locally saved
.webmfile. Riot says the client lets you choose save locations for replays and Highlights, and Highlights can be viewed, renamed, or deleted from the client’s profile section.
Riot says VLC can play Highlights and that WebM works in modern HTML5-compatible browsers. Saving an important moment as a local video is useful when you want to retain it beyond the replay’s patch-cycle availability; that is an inference from Riot’s replay-expiry and local-file guidance, not a separate archival feature.

Use League Director for controlled replay footage
Riot describes League Director as a tool for staging and recording videos from League replays. Its documented features include playback and speed controls, first-person camera controls, attaching the camera to a champion or minion, hiding interface elements, graphics settings, and a sequencer for keyframed camera positions. It can capture WebM or PNG. This is the option for deliberate camera work, rather than the quickest way to revisit a match or save a short clip.
Setup and configuration
The repository labels its instructions Windows-only. Its documented workflow is to install and start League Director, launch League and a replay, then use the in-game FPS Camera mode. The project says Very High graphics settings are required for additional rendering features such as skyboxes; after changing graphics settings, restart the replay for them to take effect.

- Follow the installation instructions in the League Director repository.
- Start League Director, launch League, and open a replay.
- Use the in-game FPS Camera mode to work with the replay in League Director.
- If you need the documented extra rendering features, set graphics to Very High and restart the replay after changing the setting.
If League Director does not connect, its FAQ says EnableReplayApi=1 in game.cfg may be needed. Riot’s Developer Portal Replay API documentation also says the Replay API is disabled by default and documents enabling it with the same config value. The API includes endpoints for playback, rendering, recording, and sequences.
What changed or may change in 2026?
Riot’s patch schedule lists patch 26.20 for October 7, 2026, while noting that planned dates can change. The schedule is a date for a planned patch, not confirmation of any particular replay-policy change. Community reports have alleged that this patch limits replay access to matches a player personally played, but Riot’s official materials cited here do not confirm that claim. Do not rely on it as established policy; check Riot’s current support guidance or patch notes for confirmation.
For the scheduled date and its caveat, see Riot’s League of Legends patch schedule.
