Best Tools for Managing Ecommerce Customer Complaints: Gorgias vs. Zendesk

For an ecommerce team that needs order context and commerce-specific support workflows, Gorgias is the more directly focused option to evaluate. Zendesk is a broader customer service platform for teams that need ticketing alongside capabilities such as knowledge management, analytics, messaging, and voice. Neither is a universal winner: the right fit depends on where complaints arrive, what agents need to see or do about orders, and how the team handles unresolved cases.

How to choose a complaint-management tool

A helpdesk brings customer conversations into an organized support workflow. Depending on the product and configuration, agents can manage tickets, use customer context, route work, automate routine steps, and review performance. For ecommerce, the crucial distinction is how well the support workspace connects a complaint to the customer and order—and whether it supports the actions agents are authorized to take.

Start with the complaint journey rather than a feature checklist: a customer reports a late delivery, an agent checks the order and prior conversation, the case is assigned and followed up, and unresolved or sensitive issues are escalated. Use that journey to assess each of these areas:

  • Commerce context and actions: Check which customer and order details appear in the agent workspace and whether agents can perform the order-related actions your policies allow. Confirm support for your specific store platform and workflow; a general mention of ecommerce integrations does not establish that every integration or action is available.
  • Channels: List the channels customers actually use—such as email, website chat, social messaging, SMS, or voice—and check whether the required channels can be handled in the same workflow. A vendor’s broad channel list does not prove that every channel is included in every plan.
  • Complaint handling: Map how agents will assign, prioritize, tag, escalate, and follow up on complaints. Test rules for unresolved and sensitive cases, not just a routine order-status question. The vendors describe ticketing and workflow capabilities, but their product pages do not establish the exact setup or plan availability for every rule.
  • Self-service and automation: Look for a help center or other useful way to answer recurring questions, with a clear path to a person when a customer’s issue needs judgment. Automation claims from a vendor are not a forecast for your store: test the cases you intend to automate and confirm how exceptions reach a human.
  • Reporting: Identify the measures managers need, such as response and resolution performance, customer satisfaction, and recurring complaint themes. Ask how each measure is defined and whether reports can be exported; a feature label such as “analytics” alone does not answer either question.
  • Operational fit and cost: Account for team size, channels, integrations, usage, and governance needs. Current plan prices and entitlements were not established on a comparable basis for these two products, so the information here is not a price ranking.

Gorgias Ecommerce-oriented helpdesk Centralized inbox, ticket management, automations, customer context, performance reporting, help center/self-service, and ecommerce and adjacent commerce integrations Not stated here on a comparable current-plan basis Stores prioritizing commerce context and ecommerce-focused support workflows

These descriptions reflect the vendors’ own product pages, not an independent head-to-head evaluation. The pages do not establish equivalent channel coverage, integration depth, plan entitlements, or performance under the same test conditions.

1. Gorgias: an ecommerce-oriented helpdesk

Gorgias describes its Helpdesk as designed for ecommerce teams. Its product page presents a centralized inbox for support messages, with ticket management, automation, customer context, reporting, a help center, and integrations with ecommerce platforms and related commerce services. That positioning makes it a natural candidate when agents need store information close to customer conversations.

Where it may fit

  • A store wants a support workspace centered on ecommerce conversations rather than a general-purpose service platform.
  • Agents need customer and order context as part of complaint handling.
  • The team wants to evaluate ticket automation, reporting, self-service, and commerce integrations within one helpdesk.

What to verify

The vendor’s feature descriptions do not establish whether your specific store platform, order actions, channels, or desired automations are supported on the plan you would buy. In a product demonstration, walk through a real complaint—from finding the order to escalating an unresolved case—and confirm which steps happen inside the support workspace. Do not treat the vendor’s “#1” positioning or performance claims as independent findings.

A Shopify App Store search listing showed a starting price of $10 per month and a free trial at the time of that listing. This is a volatile marketplace figure, not a complete quote for a particular team, plan, or feature set; it is not a reliable current price comparison.

2. Zendesk: a broader customer service platform

Zendesk describes its platform as combining AI, agents, knowledge, and workflows. Its product page lists ticketing, knowledge, analytics and reporting, quality assurance, messaging and live chat, voice, workforce management, and integrations. That breadth is relevant when ecommerce complaints are part of a service operation shared across channels or departments.

Where it may fit

  • A team needs to assess ticketing alongside knowledge management, reporting, quality assurance, or workforce management.
  • Customer service spans messaging or live chat and voice, or coordination across more than one team.
  • The company wants to evaluate a broader service platform rather than selecting primarily for ecommerce-specific workflows.

What to verify

The listed capabilities do not establish which channels, features, integrations, or workflows are included in a particular plan or suitable for your store. Confirm how agents will see order details, how complaints are routed, and how a customer moves from self-service or automation to a human agent. Zendesk’s automation percentages and customer-story outcomes are vendor-published claims, not neutral predictions for an individual store.

How to compare the two in a realistic evaluation

  1. Write down the complaint paths. Include common cases such as a delayed shipment or return request, plus an unresolved or sensitive complaint. Note the channel, information the agent needs, permitted order actions, and who should own escalation.
  2. Use the same scenarios in each product. Ask each vendor to demonstrate the same cases, with your required store platform and channels. Observe whether agents can find the relevant customer and order context, apply the right workflow, and keep the customer’s follow-up visible.
  3. Test automation boundaries. Identify the cases suitable for automatic handling and those that require human judgment. Check what happens when an automation cannot resolve the issue, what context reaches the human, and whether the customer can reach a person without restarting the conversation.
  4. Check management visibility. Ask to see the reports your managers would use. Confirm how response and resolution measures are defined, whether complaint themes can be reviewed, and what export options are available.
  5. Compare the actual commercial scope. Request current pricing and plan entitlements for the channels, integrations, usage, and team size you need. Include setup and operational requirements in the comparison; the product descriptions alone do not establish total cost.

What vendor claims can—and cannot—tell you

Product pages are useful for understanding how a vendor positions its platform and which capability areas it describes. They are not, by themselves, a neutral test of how the tools compare for a specific ecommerce operation. The reviewed pages do not provide a comparable head-to-head method for validating automated-resolution percentages or customer-story outcomes. Treat those figures as vendor claims, not expected results for your store.

Likewise, a capability listed on a product page is not proof that it is available in every plan or configured the way your team needs. Confirm the exact integration, channel, workflow, and reporting behavior for your use case before making a decision.

Can either tool automatically resolve every complaint?

Are their prices directly comparable from the figures available?

No. A marketplace listing showed a Gorgias starting figure at the time it appeared, but it does not establish a current, like-for-like total for the plans and requirements a particular team would use. A comparable current price and plan-entitlement comparison is not established here.

Do these product descriptions prove which tool has better results?

No. Vendor product pages and customer stories describe vendor-reported capabilities or outcomes; the reviewed pages do not establish an independent head-to-head test using a comparable method.
